Village Farm Grocery has closed for now on 2nd Avenue

The corner market on the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Ninth Street closed yesterday...

This after reducing hours in recent days. As EVG correspondent Steven noted, Village Farm Grocery remained open even after the blackout and Superstorm Sandy... and they are the latest neighborhood deli to close during the COVID-19 crisis.

Meanwhile, several blocks to the south on Second Avenue... East Village Farm and Grocery at Fourth Street is open — but only for deliveries... no customers permitted inside...

There was some guy grinding off the lock to I assume his bike yesterday around 2:30. In front of the store on 9th.There were several people taking pictures of him. Strange sight at the streets were nearly empty.

Oh man I hope they survive. This place is my go-to spot for certain items. I hope they're being given a deal on rent!

Last week they were selling a 33.8 fl. oz bottle of hand sanitizer for $60.00. SIXTY DOLLARS. The gentlemen in front of me, a city worker, was buying a bottle. He turned to me and said, "What else am I supposed to do?" I didn't answer him. He mentioned he might come back and shut off their water, though. Would have served them right. So, little sympathy for them here. And, yes, I reported them to 311 for price gouging -- a comparable bottle shouldn't have been north of $7 even with a %10 markup.

The delis and bodegas are closing - some for the duration and maybe some for ??? - but they are missed.

Also closed now are Ray's on 2nd Ave. between 12th/13th Street, and Heavenly Deli at the NE corner of 11th St. & 3rd Ave.

Of course they gonna make it. It's one of the biggest money making delis for decades now. Stop weeping.
