Updated: Readers report the gates were locked as early as 1 p.m.
Work appeared to have been completed several days ago, but the space remained locked, prompting questions from community members eager to have access to the Park during the pandemic.
Local Assembly Member Harvey Epstein shared the reopening news yesterday ...
Good News: The Sauer Park project on East 12th Street between Avenues A & B has been completed, and the park will be reopened tomorrow – a Christmas present to the community!

The $4 million renovation — part of Mayor de Blasio’s Community Parks Initiative — originally had a completion date of October 2020, though that was later changed to this month, per the Park's website. The links below provide more history of the project.

Same fence. Coat of paint on pillars. A little grass. 4 million dollars. Someone sure got a Christmas miracle.
As of 1pm the gates are locked shut
And then, at 3pm, when the rain stopped, we went to the park and it was closed. Great disappointment all around.
Wow - 4 Million? Could of done that job for $75K - what a waste of OUR dollars.
@4:26pm: It seems life is often a great disappointment. This is the least of it, frankly, in a pandemic year.
Demand Scott Stringer audit this project!
Wow what a bunch of cynics. Besides the old trees, the flag post and 3 of the 4 structures the park was completely dug up to install a better fountain, a watering system, a new landscape with more seating, new play equipment, all new child friendly and tough surfaces, new plantings, new inside lighting which never existed before, repaired and re-painted fence, new sidewalk, etc... Be grateful that the city spent money in our neighborhood rather elsewhere like the upper east side.
