A little more progress to note along the Avenue B Open Street corridor.
Yesterday, DOT crews installed new signage along Avenue B as part of the permanent redesign underway this summer.
Among the additions are signs designating Avenue B as a Bike Boulevard, noting that cyclists may use the full lane. The speed limit along the corridor for trucks is also now 10 mph.
As previously reported, the larger DOT project includes a two-way bike connection along the corridor, expanded pedestrian space, loading zones and intersection safety improvements.
Per the DOT, a bike boulevard is a low-traffic, slow-speed street designed to make cycling and micromobility safer and more comfortable while still allowing local vehicle access. The routes typically span several blocks and use traffic-calming measures to create a more continuous neighborhood bike connection.
Avenue B was also converted to one-way northbound vehicle traffic between Seventh and 10th Streets. Parking is now prohibited on the west side of B between Seventh and Ninth Streets.
Work started in late June and has continued in phases throughout the summer.

Bicyclists “allowed full use of lane”? Since when were we not? I mean, do you seriously think anyone wants to ride in the narrow, slimy gutter chutes the DOTA creates?
10mph is ridiculous, not that you can drive much faster on such a narrow street. Meanwhile, e-bike fly by going at least 20.
I think bike riders have been given too much entitlement. Especially since too many of them are reckless and don’t abide by the rules. This particular nonsense is just inviting more accidents

Are there speed cameras? My car goes over 10 mph with my foot off the accelerator!! Seems like a way to close down another street without totally doing it. Love bikes and I am all for less pollution and more public transport use, but some of us with with heavy gear for our jobs need reasonable car use to the roads that our taxes pay for too. Would love to see NYC do more to support programs to help transition from gas cars to e-cars for people that must use them please.

Too many local cars, like those which leave their parking spot just twice a week for few minutes each time, were flying 40+ MPH on both sides of this corridor, which was supposed to be a 5 MPH lane.
As a multi-modal family who has lived here for decades, is there any published summary of the pros and cons of having (for a fee) street parking permits for locals? Let those who register their cars outside Manhattan pay for off-street parking.

These DOT people have no balance anymore they’ve gone crazy! I love taking my bike but it’s a wildly diff to than a car. This is absurd and childish. And now there’s more traffic on A btw.
It didn’t need to be a “5 MPH Lane”. Enough is enough. A street is a street.

I walk this stretch with a kid daily. Nope. I don’t need it! In fact said exactly that at the tabling and to Transportation alternatives.
Why won’t any city dept take responsibility for the walkway through Tompkins park? It’s crumbling and dangerously uneven with potholes. Two years of shutting down a big chunk of the park for that itty bitty building and they couldn’t even fit the walkway into that project. And there’s no water or bottle fountain at the building. Wtf!
We walk this daily with our kiddos and we are so happy to have this! Multiple public schools on/near this stretch. Have had so many times that people plow through with cars using B as a thru, way above the speed. Can't stop people from being idiots, but can certainly slow them down.

Nobody "must" use them. There are laborers with equipment on the subway every day. And just don't drive on B if it bothers you so much.
At least the barricades are gone though. That was so ridiculous and dangerous for pedestrians since you had no idea who was going to try to go for it from both directions. Even the DOT acknowledged that the barricades were not a great solution.
Just pedestrianize it already. Ave B from 14th to Houston.
It’s a street dude. This is a functioning major city. We can walk on the sidewalk. Stop being annoying.
Bikes are always allowed the full use of the lane in NYC. I really hope this “expansion of bike infrastructure” over the last few years is not an excuse to eventually restrict bikes to those pieces of infrastructure.
As it stands right now, every street in NYC is bike infrastructure
Pedestrianisation is happening all over the city... including our neighborhood. Get used to it or move to Texas if it annoys you.

Re: pedestrianize…. are you also thinking that should happen on St. Mark’s too? Dining on the street? No need for MTA bus so just reroute essential mass transit?
Lol exactly. What is the point of this? Why can’t the just be a normal street? DOT is bored and tries to be “innovative” for “joy” at the expense of normal people
