Korilla BBQ confirmed for Archie & Sons space

As we reported last Thursday, Archie & Sons, the year-old luncheonette on Third Avenue at St. Mark's Place, was "closed for remodeling."

In this case, "closed for remodeling" was code for "we're not reopening." It was a foregone conclusion that Archie's was done for. We heard rumors going back to June that the folks from Archie's were teaming up with a food-truck vendor for a new venture here at 23 Third Ave. (Eater reported on this rumor Thursday.)

We have confirmation from a very reliable source that food truckers Korilla BBQ will open their first restaurant in this space in the weeks ahead.

If you're new to Korilla BBQ, then you can read this review at Serious Eats.

As for this address, perhaps Korilla will be able to stick around. Tahini closed here in June 2012. Then Little Italy Pizza (heh) lasted four whole months. Archie's opened last Aug. 12.

[Updated] A new look for the magazine shop on Third Avenue and St. Mark's Place

[Photo by EVG reader William Klayman]

The plywood came off today at the former New Corner Magazine (or King's Magazine) on St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue.

The landlord told us that the space will remain a newsstand, though there will be "an upgrade in the operator and the space."

The space will have a more appealing look for the nerds employees of the new IBM business across the street at the IBM Watson building.

And the space will no longer have a little kiosk on Third Avenue… where DJ Lenny M held forth for so many years

Updated 1/21

A reader tells us that the newsstand is now open... though it is not yet fully stocked.

Archie & Sons, a new luncheonette, opening very soon at 23 Third Ave.

Work is wrapping up at 23 Third Ave. near St. Mark's Place... where Archie & Sons, a 1950s-style luncheonette, is expected to open this week...

There was a casting call for staff on July 22...

Archie & Sons has roots on Long Island (Hewlett) where proprietor Howie Cohen ran Archie's Deli until 2010. He's bringing that concept here.

Cohen is also one of the investors who bought the Papaya King brand several years ago.

While we didn't get a chance to speak with Cohen, Blake Gower, part of the Papaya King team, told us a little more about Archie & Sons.

"Howie and his family have been in the business for decades. The presence of B&H and Stage reinforced our thinking that the East Village was the right kind of neighborhood to bring this to life in NYC; there's a certain warmth and appreciation for homey neighborhood places that persists in the East Village," Gower said. "I grew up eating at the original Archie's — I still have dreams about side dishes of Howie's macaroni salad."

Archie's will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They originally announced an Aug. 1 opening date, though Gower said that they may bump that back by a day or two.

23 Third Ave. was mostly recently home to a fairly humdrum slice place.

What a lot of 'foot traffic' will cost you on Third Avenue and St. Mark's Place

We previously reported that workers quickly moved out of the short-lived Little Italy Pizza joint at 23 Third Ave. at St. Mark's Place.

For rent signs went up, though we didn't see the listing online...

However, a listing is now posted at NYCRS:

As you can see, the asking rent is $11,000 per month (plus $275k in key money) for the 900-square-foot space. You'd think this place could/would be a goldmine — especially with you know what with all those new office workers popping up directly across Third Avenue.

Any thoughts on what you'd like to see here? (Other than my dream zine/egg shop)?

Live at 1 St. Mark's Place this summer; views of 51 Astor Place are free

This past weekend, I took photos of the "for rent" signs at the now-vacant Little Italy Pizza at 23 Third Ave. ... I've always been curious by the building that stands here on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and St. Mark's Place... long a witness to generations of new people entering and exploring St. Mark's Place and the East Village...

What's it like to live up there, behind that Falafel/Shawarma lettering? Turns out there's a new listing for a summer-only rental here. And it turns out to be much more luxurious than I ever imagined.

Check out the listing for 1 St. Mark's Place aka 23 Third Ave.:

Furnished Loft Rental – 1 Saint Marks – At Astor Place, the Heart of the Village, with views of Cooper Union and the Cube.

Enjoy loft living this summer in this spectacular Astor Place townhouse. This approximately 2000 square foot floor-through duplex features 14’ ceilings, exposed brick, original plank floors and oversize windows. There is also top of the line open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite counter-tops. Baths are modern with marble and an en-suite washer/dryer.

AND, there is an enormous private patio, an ideal space for entertaining this summer.

Here's a shot of that patio... (and it would be better with a view of the Gringo mural)

...and the interior...

The monthly rent: $6,000, and it's only available for July and August.

Just think, by then, you'll likely be able to see new office workers arrive inside the Death Star 51 Astor Place directly across the street...

Breaking: Workers gutting Little Italy Pizza on Third Avenue

Little Italy Pizza opened up here at 23 Third Ave. at St. Mark's Place in August... and EVG regular Stephen Popkin notes this afternoon that workers were gutting the space... not sure yet if this is some kind of renovation or permanent closure...

Most recently, the space was home to Tahini, which closed for good in June... and a few years back... St. Mark's Pizza.

Anyway, did anyone ever try Little Italy Pizza? They had a breakfast deal too... Almost seemed like the brightest storefront around...
