John?!

A few readers asked about this awning that arrived yesterday outside Amanita, the gallery that debuted last fall at 313 Bowery.

The question: Is this some kind of statement about John Varvatos next door? (CBGB until 2006.)

Dunno!

The piece is titled:

John?!
Spray paint on custom awning
72 x 36 x 24 in.
182 x 91 x 60 cm

And the awning is part of a new exhibit featuring the work of Louis Osmosis titled "Recording Artists." Here's more about the artist via the gallery
Louis Osmosis (b. 1996, Brooklyn, NY) is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture, drawing, performance, and text. His practice revolves heavily around craft/manufacture, performative actions, and readymades, incorporating found objects and vernacular materials from popsicle sticks to graphic t-shirts, and hornet nests to violins. Equally invested in reenactment and artistic production, Osmosis's speculative approach to form reflects his ongoing "investigation into affected modes of aspiration and lack." Osmosis received his BFA from the Cooper Union in 2018.
Tonight's opening is from 6-8. The exhibit is up through May 7.

Art gallery Amanita debuts today on the Bowery

Photo from Saturday when paper still covered the front windows

Amanita opens its first dedicated NYC space this evening (Sept. 29) at 313 Bowery with "Place Holder," featuring works by emerging Italian painter Leonardo Meoni.

Here's more about the first show:
The works in the exhibition are all on velvet. The marked surfaces result not from any kind of additive or subtractive process, but from something in between. This liminal state, in which pigment is not added nor are the fibers of the velvet removed, represents a mode of mark-making that is as immediate as it is indirect.

Through this technique, Meoni has devised a refreshing approach to image-making that is the result of active, performative gestures of rubbing, brushing, pressing, and imprinting forms into the responsive velvet surface. Leo uses his fingers, unloaded paint brushes, gardening equipment, cooking utensils and construction tools to create impressions in the medium.
Tonight's opening is from 6-8. "Placeholder" will be on view here in the 3,500-square-foot space between First Street and Second Street through Oct. 30.

Caio Twombly, the son of sculptor Alessandro Twombly and grandson of the painter Cy Twombly, founded the gallery last year in Florence.

First sign of the new gallery opening in September at 313 Bowery

Temp signage is now up in the window at 313 Bowery for Spazio Amanita, which is opening a gallery next month here between First Street and Second Street...
We first reported about the gallery, founded by Caio Twombly, the son of sculptor Alessandro Twombly and grandson of the painter Cy Twombly, last month. You can revisit our post here for more details.

This space last housed a Patagonia shop.... and the storefront adjacent to the one-time home of CBGB housed the CBGB Record Canteen and, later, the 313 Gallery.

Spazio Amanita coming to the Bowery

Renovations continue inside the papered-up storefront at 313 Bowery, where we've learned that Spazio Amanita is opening a gallery this fall here between First Street and Second Street.

Here's more about the gallery, founded by Caio Twombly, the son of sculptor Alessandro Twombly and grandson of the painter Cy Twombly:
Amanita was founded in 2021 with the primary goal of supporting artists, from all backgrounds and nationalities, at various levels of their careers. Amanita provides our artists with resources and exhibition opportunities to help foster and grow their practices. Amanita has gallery locations in New York City and Florence, as well as a residency program in the Etruscan town of Bassano in Teverina. In addition to our permanent gallery locations, Amanita has organized exhibitions in Miami, LA, Milan, and St Moritz.
You can follow the gallery's Instagram account for updates.

Patagonia was in this storefront for nine years, departing back in the fall.

Previously, the address was a pop-up shop for a rock-inspired clothing line called Andrew Charles created by Andy Hilfiger and Steven Tyler ... and the Morrison Hotel Gallery. And before all this: The space adjacent to CBGB housed the CBGB Record Canteen and, later, the 313 Gallery. The former CBGB next door at 315 Bowery remains the John Varvatos outpost.

Surf's up for Patagonia on the Bowery

The Patagonia outpost on the Bowery has closed.

The sustainable outdoor brand closed here at 313 Bowery at the end of October. (Other NYC locations, such as on Greene Street and West 14th Street, remain open.) No reason was cited for this closure.

Patagonia opened here in late 2012 as the brand's first East Coast Patagonia Surf Store. They were active with sustainable causes through the years, such as supporting Surfrider, a nonprofit committed to protecting NYC's waterways and coastal communities. They'd also share information from East River Park Action

Previously, the space was a pop-up shop for a rock-inspired clothing line called Andrew Charles created by Andy Hilfiger and Steven Tyler ... and the Morrison Hotel Gallery

And a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
The space adjacent to CBGB housed the CBGB Record Canteen and, later, the 313 Gallery.

315 Bowery, the former CBGB, remains the John Varvatos outpost.

Is this the warm, fuzzy feeling that you were expecting at 313 Bowery?

We've been wondering what would go into the retail space at 313 Bowery since the Riff pop-up shop closed in May... Now we know, thanks to a scoop over at the Observer: Patagonia. The outdoor clothing and gear store is moving into the two levels of combined 8,100-square-feet of space that once housed the CBGB Record Canteen and, later, the 313 Gallery.

And the quote of the day goes to the leasing executive who said this to the Observer:

“Patagonia loves historic space. 313 was just the perfect location. In the basement there are still the bathrooms from CBGB’s time that are scrawled with all the writing from club-goers over the years.”

Pop-up party is over at Riff on the Bowery

Just catching up on a few items that I didn't get to this past week.

Such as!

Riff, the pop-up store at 313 Bowery, closed last Sunday.

The place opened last October and featured the rock-inspired clothing line called Andrew Charles created by Andy Hilfiger and Steven Tyler... (Tyler performed there during a grand opening last fall.)

In fact, the only thing left in the space is this cutout of Tyler with his daughter Chelsea...

Not sure what's coming here next... the Morrison Hotel Gallery was here for several years..

And, once upon a time ...

[Corbis]

There was the CBGB Record Canteen and, later, the 313 Gallery.

313 had been on the market for months...

However, RKF has removed the listing...

Here's the perfect space for the new CBGB

So as Gothamist reported this morning, there's some sort of movement to bring back CBGB.

Let's jut gloss over whether this is even a good idea... If the new CBGB people need a space, here's an option: 313 Bowery, once home to the CBGB Gallery... right next door to CBGB, of course.

The space has been on the market for months. (See the listing here.)

The Morrison Hotel Gallery checked out of 313 Bowery at the end of September. Recently, the space became home to Riff, which sells the rock-and-boa inspired clothing line called Andrew Charles, created in part by Steven Tyler. Apparently, though, that store is only here on a temporary basis.

The lower level can be leased separately, where that secret club was for a bit.

Can you come home again?

Former CBGB Gallery space still on the market

While trolling around the RKF site, we came across a listing (PDF) for 313 Bowery, once home to the CBGB Gallery at 313 Bowery.

Here's the listing... Ohh! And already name-checking André Balazs...
