Tree spared from death by cement on Avenue C

[Via EVG reader Ann]

Last week, we noted that someone filled up the above tree well with about 500 pounds of cement on Avenue C… as an update, by this past weekend, the cement was gone…

Now can the tree survive the Sunburnt Cow's all-you-can-drink brunch crowd?

One way to kill a tree

[Via EVG reader Ann]

Several readers have noted this WTF situation on Avenue C near East Ninth Street in front of the Sunburnt Cow. In recents days someone basically smothered this tree well with about 500 pounds of cement...

... and people have taken notice, though it may be too late to save this 1-year-old tree...

The Cellphone Doctor is (almost) in on Avenue C

Just noting the pending arrival of a new business on Avenue C between East Sixth Street and East Seventh Street... at the empty storefronts owned by the NYCHA... where the images from Chico's mural here on the roll down gates have nearly vanished...

Apartment 13 nearly ready for occupancy

Dave on 7th notes that the plywood came down at the former location of The Porch on Avenue C between East Seventh and East Eighth Street... Apartment 13 is the new bar-restaurant from Paul Seres, the former president of the New York Nightlife Association and a partner in The DL on Delancey and Ludlow...

A quick refresher on the concept, via CB3 paperwork:

All entrees at Apt 13 will be market driven and will be served in the same style as Korean barbeque. Every dish will be served with side dishes, appetizers, condiments, sauces, salads, and garnitures. Seasonally and locally driven. Family styled dinners. Meant to feel reminiscent of an intimate sit down dinner in our apartment. All dishes will change based on market availability. In following the theme and mission statement of apartment 13 we strive to not only support our local state Farms but also our neighborhood by featuring local artists and supporting local businesses.

There was opposition to this application. CB3 OK'd the liquor license in December (it failed to get the green light in October) ... we wrote about it in December. (Revisit that here.)

No word yet on an opening date.

Witness a 7-story residential conversion on Avenue C

The 3,050-square-foot, two-story Kingdom Hall owned by the Jehovah's Witnesses at 67 Avenue C will soon yield a 7-story, 7-unit residential building, BuzzBuzzHome first reported on Friday.

Permits filed Wednesday at the DOB show plans for 1,843 square feet of commercial space and 7,451 square feet of residential space. As BuzzBuzz pointed out, the building just south of East Fifth Street will get five new levels, including "a penthouse vertical extension. The residences will be full-floor and half-floor, with a duplex penthouse on top." (As we understand it, the Jehovah's Witnesses will continue to use the adjacent space at 63 and 65 Avenue C.)

Developer Natan Vinbaytel is listed as the developer. (He's also currently putting up the new 6-floor building at 227 E. Seventh St.) The architect is Vikatos Architect PC.

We wrote about a potential sale back in August 2009 during a guest stint at Curbed. At the time the asking price was $2.2 million.

The space hit the market again in May 2012.

The staging obviously sold this Avenue C duplex

An EVG regular shared this apartment listing with us...

Step right up to a UNIQUE 2BR/CONV3 with space for four to share!

Nestled on Avenue C - the new block du jour of the East Village, this is a sprawling listing in a new building.

Upstairs you'll find the kitchen, two HUGE bedrooms (Queen sized beds and dressers, check) a full kitchen and full bath.

Down the spiral staircase you'll find a MEGA studio space plus alcove, plus half bath. And a private second entrance. It's like a whole other apartment. You also have access down here to your HUGE OUTDOOR SPACE!

Yes, blah, blah. It was the accompanying photos, though, that really bring home this duplex's best features ...

... no word if the can of Lysol and the plastic beverage cooler are included on the HUGE OUTDOOR SPACE!

Anyway. Doesn't matter. Staging sells, of course, and devotees of the lived-in bro look likely couldn't pass this one up! Plus, demand being what it is, this place was on Streeteasy less than a week before some people rented it. Price: $3,595.

Plywood arrives for Apartment 13, the new restaurant from Paul Seres on Avenue C

Plywood went up late last week at the former location of The Porch on Avenue C between East Seventh and East Eighth Street... Apartment 13 is the new restaurant from Paul Seres, the former president of the New York Nightlife Association and a partner in The DL on Delancey and Ludlow...

Here is what CB3 signed off on... via the minutes from the CB3 website (PDF)

Apartment 13 (115 Ave C LLC), 115 Ave C (op)
VOTE: To deny the application for a full on‐premise liquor license for 115 Avenue C LLC, with a proposed business name of Apartment 13, for the premise located at 115 Avenue C, unless the applicant agrees before the SLA to make as conditions of its license the following signed notarized stipulation that
1) it will operate as a full‐service restaurant, specifically a comfort food restaurant, with a kitchen open and serving food during all hours of operation,
2) its hours of operation will be 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M. Sundays through Wednesdays and 4:00 P.M. to
12:00 A.M. Thursdays through Saturday,
3) it will play ambient background music only, consisting of recorded music, and not have live music, DJs,
promoted events, scheduled performances or any events at which a cover fee will be charged,
4) it will close façade doors and windows at 9:00 P.M. weeknights and 10:00 P.M.; Fridays and Saturdays,
5) it will only commercially use the second floor patio if it is first completely enclosed and soundproofed,
6) it will install additional soundproofing per the recommendation of an acoustical report, and
7) it will designate an employee to control crowds and noise on the sidewalk.
Community Board #3 is approving this application for a full on‐premise liquor license although this is a location in an area with numerous licensed premises because 1) Paul Seres, the principal of this application, has a longstanding history as a responsible liquor license holder at other licensed businesses, 2) this is an application for a full‐service restaurant with a locally sourced food and drink menu and moderate operating hours, and 3) this application will replace a preexisting problematic business.

No word yet on an opening date.

From hair salon to campaign headquarters

There has been some activity of late at the long-vacant former hair salon on Avenue C between East Sixth Street and East Seventh Street... right in between Alphabet City Wine Co. and ABC Beer Co.

Turns out the space will be the campaign headquarters for Rick Del Rio, a Democrat running for City Council against Rosie Mendez. You can read about him here.

Why a lot of people think that Verizon sucks, especially along Avenue C

The WNYC News Blog has a post on how some residents and business owners in the East Village — particularly along Avenue C — have quit Verizon after extended phone and Internet outages dating back to Sandy. Many businesses were unable to process credit-card orders, and have lost business in the process.

Among those business along (or near!) Avenue C that made the switch to other providers, such as Time Warner and Clear: Bobwhite Lunch Supper Counter, Alphabet City Wine Co., Barnyard Cheese Shop and Brix Wine Shop.

Verizon "wouldn't say how many people and businesses are still without service and couldn't fully explain the persistent outages and poor communications along Avenue C," according to the article.

Said a Verizon spokesperson: "There are certain instances where we have access issues, getting into certain buildings, but people and businesses should feel confident that we’re working 24-hours, around the clock, with not only building managers and property owners, but also within our own network to get this restored."

Have you been affected (or maybe infected) by the Verizon outage?
