The (fake) saw-whet owl of 1st Avenue

Photos by Steven

If you're passing the SE corner of First Avenue and Seventh Street near Saifee Hardware, you may notice something perched above the walk sign. It's a saw-whet owl...
... and it's not real. (It fooled at least one reader who shared photos asking what kind of bird it is.)
As you know, artificial saw-whet owls are perfect for commercial displays, fall decor ... and provide a symbolic meaning of being protective and insightful.

Mystery signage reveal today on Ninth Street near First Avenue... what could it be here in the westbound Ninth Street?????? Looking forward to the official unveiling! Photo by William Klayer.

Today in photos of a discarded meat slicer on 1st Avenue

EVG reader Noah Shannon shared these photos from First Avenue at Sixth Street...

The abandoned slicer looks too carefully placed to be randomly discarded. Perhaps the Cuomo Administration left this to remind bars and restaurants that they must offer "substantial" menu items with curbside service?

Pillow talk

In lieu of snow this January... here's what appears to be pillow stuffing in parts of Tompkins Square Park...

The stuffing arrived some time between 7-8:30 a.m., per Vinny & O, who shared these photos.

Updated 10 a.m.

EVG reader Annabelle points out the faux snowscape can be traced to a single pillow...

Avenue C is the place to be

On Monday, someone (or something!) mysteriously moved this haul to the east side of Avenue C near East 10th Street...

[Bobby Williams]

... where it remains ... and, as Brett Pants notes, it has become a bit of popular spot for hanging out...

...just don't tell anyone about it...

Saint Brigid-Saint Emeric gets mass-schedule holder display cases

Since reopening, Saint Brigid-Saint Emeric has had its mass schedule taped to the front doors here on Avenue B. But! In a new development captured by Dave on 7th yesterday, the church has installed display cases out front for the schedules and other announcements... (still hoping for bingo night...)

Study: Tweets show there are 'pockets of unhappiness in the East Village'

Per the Post:

Researchers from the University of Vermont mapped out the city’s happiest areas using a complex formula that can pinpoint tweet locations and rate their relative “happiness” and “sadness” based on certain key words.

Key words like "sun" and "yoga" (yay! happy!) and sad words such as "hate" and "hell." (How about "another fucking rent hike"?)

(Also. Tricky: A word like "Woooooo!" could be seen as happy or sad, depending on who is on the receiving end of the Woooooo!, if researchers had actually measured Woooooo!)

The data found that the largest concentration of happy tweets came from the Times Square region. (Tourists: duh)

While most of Manhattan south of Central Park had people tweeting happily, there were pockets of unhappiness in the East Village, Chelsea and the area around City Hall. There were also a large number of sad tweets coming from the area around the United Nations.

No word if researchers measured emoticons.

About Alec Baldwin's 'rant'

The Post has an "exclusive" today about an alleged run-in between Alec Baldwin and a Post reporter and photographer... among other things, he reportedly used a a racial epithet about the photographer, who is black, and said to the reporter "I want you to choke to death." (Baldwin's spokesperson called the racial accusations "completely false.")

Putting aside what may or may not have happened... all the reports say that this confrontation occurred "on an East Village street." It was on East 10th Street outside his apartment building at University Place, which The New York Times refers to as Greenwich Village.

You may now continue with your Presidents' Day.

A yellow brick ad returns

And on St. Mark's Place at Avenue A, the return of hand-painted ads... this time for Umbro, the longtime English sportswear company owned by Nike...

Umbro has been around since 1924 ... and their name is now part of the local vernacular, as in, "Um, bro — get me a shot and a Coors Light!"

Anyway! A quick look at other recent ads on this corner...

You've been warned

Last week, we provided photographic evidence that several monsters/creatures had been spotted nesting in the area.

It's getting worse. Our friend Goggla sends along a dispatch: "They've infiltrated Spring and Sullivan...I predict more pods will hatch as the weather gets warmer."

Oh, never mind about that whole 'breaking news' on East Second Street thing

Heh. Well! Upon closer inspection, it appears that the DOT closed off Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B so that WABC can film crews filling potholes...

Thanks to Samo for the photos.

Laundry loyalties on Avenue B

The new Quick Coin laundromat is now open on Avenue B near Fourth Street... in the former Carne Vale space...

Meanwhile, a few doors to the south... the other, older laundromat is throwing a 20th anniversary special...

...and just a few doors to the north... another laundromat ... (which is, I think, just drop-off service now, right?)

A reader told me that he feels guilty about using the new laundromat, but it is better, he says.

A reader question

An EV Grieve reader sent this photo of an ad for the M15 Select Bus Service that just went up this week ... the reader wondered why the ad was in the N-Q-R stop on Broadway and 40th...
