Good Friday on Avenue B

Photos by Stacie Joy

Once again on this Good Friday (yesterday!), parishioners from St. Brigid-St. Emeric on Avenue B took part in a Stations of the Cross processional that started outside the church on the SE corner of Eighth Street ...
The solemn walking pilgrimage — symbolizing the path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary — continued to 12th Street... east to Avenue C... south to Seventh Street.

This year's journey to the cross seemed a little more intense. (For instance, one of the Roman guards had a 6-foot-long bullwhip.)
... and eventually back to the church...
Sunday services are at 10 a.m. in English and noon in Spanish.

St. Brigid-St. Emeric on Avenue B celebrated Good Friday yesterday with a Stations of the Cross processional and Senor de los Milagros ... commemorated with Most Holy Redeemer/Nativity Parish on Third Street. (And the first in-person Good Friday procession since 2019?)

The procession began at St. Brigid on Avenue B and Eighth Street...

St. Brigid is now hosting a flea market on Saturdays

The St. Brigid-St. Emeric parish is now hosting a flea market on the first and third Saturdays of the month (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)... starting today... This had been in the works for earlier this year, but the start date was pushed back for obvious reasons. The entrance to the (former) St. Brigid schoolyard is on Avenue B between Seventh Street and Eighth Street.

In February 2019, the Archdiocese of New York announced that St. Brigid School would cease operations at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year, a move that blindsided students, parents and faculty alike.

Founded in 1856, the Saint Brigid School was one of seven city Catholic schools marked for closure by the Archdiocese.

To date, the Archdiocese has not stated its plans for the space. Mary Help of Christians hosted a weekend flea market before the property was sold for what became Steiner East Village.

COVID-19 testing site temporarily setting up behind the former St. Brigid School

Workers set up tents today behind the former St. Brigid School on Seventh Street and Avenue B.

It was a bit of a mystery until we received this missive from Assemblymember Harvey Epstein's office:

This Thursday, May 21, Somos Community Care is opening a COVID-19 testing site at St. Brigid - St. Emeric Church at 119 Avenue B (between Seventh Street and Eighth Street). This testing site will only be open until this Tuesday (May 26). You must call to make an appointment first so please do so immediately as this is a short window of time. The number is 1-833-766-6769.

It's open from 9 to 5.

Updated 5/26

Th temporary COVID-19 testing site has been extended by a few more weeks.

The site also has new hours: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As EVG contributor Stacie Joy reports, walk-ins are still possible but they would prefer that you make an appointment. Somos reps also promised better staffing of the phone lines. (Several readers reported that they couldn't get through to make an appointment.)

Good Friday on Avenue B

From the Church of Saint Brigid - Saint Emeric on Avenue B and East Eighth Street...the "Way of the Cross" procession for Good Friday...

More realistic this year... (Jesus and the Roman guards were not wearing tennis shoes, for instance, though I understand why you'd want to wear comfortable footwear for this.)

Updated: Skylight falls from St. Brigid's; Virgin Mary destroyed

There was some drama on East Eighth Street at Avenue B early this morning after one of the skylights from the Church of Saint Brigid – Saint Emeric came crashing down from the roof... @MediaJorge shared these two photos showing the FDNY on the scene...

As far as we know there weren't any injuries... we'll update when we get more information on what happened...

The combined parish reopened on Jan. 27, 2013.

Updated 10:18 a.m.

EVG reader Peter from 8th St. shared these photos from this morning...

The plastic encasement that houses the statue of the Virgin Mary was also damaged...

... as well as the Virgin Mary...
