NYPD Rally underway now in Tompkins Square Park

A quick note reminder to the drivers and owners:

It is the entrant's responsibility to provide manufacturer's documentation such as sales brochures, workshop manuals, service bulletins, etc., where necessary to substantiate the eligibility of the vehicle and its components.

This year's TreeCycle event left mulch to be desired, at least before it started

Despite having VIP All-Access Backstage Passes, we thought we'd still sit with everyone else to watch MulchFest 2015 in Tompkins Square Park.

To avoid the lines, we arrived 90 minutes (or so) before the 10 a.m. start time.

And no one was there yet to watch, lining up early for the best angles. The only people on the scene were some bored-looking Parks employees sitting in their vehicles, refusing to sign autographs even to those holding VIP All-Access Backstage Passes.

The whole thing was pretty shoddy.

The MulchFest banners had already come undone before the mulching commenced.

Worse, there were already mounds of mulch lying around the Park...

When did this mulching happen?

It's like releasing the Super Bowl commercials on YouTube weeks before the actual Super Bowl.

Back in the VIP section, the in-MulchFest buffet almost made up for it.

Mystery surrounds faceless cartoon mural on East 12th Street

On East 12th Street near First Avenue.

Last week! (Above!)

Yesterday!

A source will only reveal that the mural will be of a "beloved bald cartoon character."

Well, Ziggy is too short… so it has to be Henry, right?

Updated: Thanks to everyone who confirmed this is the work of street artist Jerkface.

Imitators already lining up to become the next Cadillac with the Tiger in it

Oh, nice try.

For the record, we flat-out rejected this proposed series: The Audi R8 V10 With a Tiger in It.

Sample passage:

"Italian White Alba truffles again for dinner. Sigh."

Previously on EV Grieve:
Today (last night) in photos of cars with starting costs of $114k on East 4th Street

And now, stories from the Cadillac with the Tiger in it on East 2nd Street

It's now officially summer — what are you gonna do now?

[EVG photo from yesterday]

I'll be sunbathing at my usual spot on East 14th Street near First Avenue.

See you in the fall!

Report: 'Sharknado' sequel promo shows NYC's 1st Citi Bike fatality

Earlier in the week, we looked at some statistics from Citi Bike showing that, thankfully, there haven't been any Citi Bike-related fatalities in the first year of the program's existence.

That is about to change, at least in the world of the SyFy channel. Gothamist notes this morning that SyFy has released a quick promo for "Sharknado Part Duh" (or whatever it is called) set to debut July 30.

If you watch the NYC-based sequel's promo closely, then you will spot a Citi Bike rider (on a sidewalk) get, um, Sharknadoed.

We've reached out to Citi Bike officials to see if members will incur overtime fees for being swallowed by a waterspout-propelled land shark.

Meanwhile, enjoy the trailer...

Tom Cruise movie poster lives to see another day on the Bowery

Hmm, something smashed into the phone bank here between East Houston and East First Street…

Forceful enough impact to cause the sidewalk to buckle … hopefully no one was making a call at the time …

… the "Edge of Tomorrow" poster mostly survived…

Anyone witness the collision?

With Avenue A closed today, mind the sightseeing buses!

Avenue A is closed today and tomorrow so we can take photos of large cranes (plus Con Ed is putting in a new transformer at the substation between East Fifth Street and East Sixth Street)…

So the alternate route is in effect… traffic personnel are redirecting, uh, traffic down East Fourth Street … north on Avenue B … and west on Seventh Street… which means sightseeing buses might start stalking you… Wait, no McSorley's is the other way! Stop!

Plans for local blogger's first brick-and-mortar store — EXPOSED

On Monday, we noted that 35 First Ave. was now home to Farid's Middle Eastern Grill Food & Pizza.

Unfortunately, plans have surfaced showing the failed business concept for this property… and we are sharing them with you as well before you read about it somewhere else.

[Click on the image for the gory details]

Heh. OK, just joking, of course… this was the handiwork of EVG regular Pinhead.

Anyway, better than a bank, right?

Right?

Hello? Anyone?

This 2nd Avenue apartment looks rather haunted, though isn't likely

We were just poking around the apartment listings at Streeteasy, as we like to do. We spotted this new ad for a one-bedroom apartment at 103 Second Ave. Innocuous enough.

The photo caught our attention, though. The empty space is rather chilly looking, with that lonely ceiling fan.

But what is really chilly... and maybe scary! Who are those shadowy figures lurking in the other room?

Ghosts of Brokers past? Hard to capture much paranormal activity based on one photo. We need to see the clocks.

Concern mounts for snowman on Second Avenue

Passersby are troubled by the snowman continuously nodding off on the job here on Second Avenue near East Houston…

How do you explain this to the children?

The EV Grieve Gift Shop is almost not really open

Speaking of shopping, we're ramping up the EVG Gift Shoppe for Friday. Among the items that you actually won't be able to buy:

We're also open to gift suggestions.

A week in the life of the Cooktop Sidewalk Garden on St. Mark's Place

It was, of course, the story the captivated the city this past week. It started after someone discarded cooktops on the sidewalk along St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Then that one guy you always see on St. Mark's Place put them to good use.

The rest is, of course, Cooktop Sidewalk Garden history.

Monday!

Tuesday!

Wednesday!

Thursday!

Friday!

Today! [sob]

It was also a week in which we learned that not many people know, exactly, what a cooktop is.

So. Worst sidewalk garden branding ever then?

There is apparently only 1 amenity worth mentioning for this E. 7th St. studio

Here's a fine looking studio now for rent ($1,750) at 17 E. Seventh St. Close to Cooper Union. The Astor Place subway entrance. McSorley's. And there are likely things about the studio to tout. Freshly buffed floors? But per the listing... there's only one thing apparently worth noting...

Immaculate studio in the heart of Greenwich Village. 2 Blocks from Astor Place and subway. CitiBike station right across the street. Available for Dec. 1st but an earlier move in can be accommodated. $50 application fee. 15% broker fee.

But "in the heart of Greenwich Village"? Haha! Fools! Everyone knows that this is Midtown South!

Gem Spa stunner: Zoltar now has Key Master competition; doomsday predicted

In a sad and shocking power play that has reverberated throughout the neighborhood, Zoltar now has a game-of-chance companion in the form of Key Blaster outside Gem Spa.

Stunned passersby were naturally stunned to see that Zoltar was no longer the only game in town, or at least here on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

"This is like really fucked up and stuff," said EVG reader Jim, who asked that his first name not be used in association with this post mostly because he was swearing. "First, they put the Lottery thing [Play Center] next to Zoltar. Then there is the display of like those Kardashian mags Us Weekly and OK! Are they purposefully trying to take away business from Zoltar?"

As for Key Master, a so-called "prize merchandising game," contestants compete to win such prizes as Macy's Gift Cards, iPhones, iPods [Ed note: Do they still make these?] and iPod Minis [Ed note: Do they still make these?].

You may also win presumably real $100 bills [Ed note: Do they still make these?] ... which might be a bad idea to have on display considering what some roughnecks with skateboards have done here in the past...

In case you've never been on a cruise ship, here's how Key Master works: You use a joystick for horizontal movement and a large button for the vertical alignment. Then! You manipulate a "key" so that it lines up perfectly with a "lock" holding a prize. If you successfully guide the key into the lock, then you win the prize. (OK, I just totally lifted that from this fellow's blog.)

A tutorial. (God, whatever you do — turn down the volume!)

Takeaway: Key Master is dumb! Long live Zoltar!
