A new era for Baohaus on St. Mark's Place

Baohaus is reportedly returning to the East Village, opening in the weeks ahead at 97 St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Avenue A.

According to Eater, who first reported the news, Eddie Huang, the chef, author and media personality, is partnering with Russell Steinberg, who operated Cecilia at No. 97, and Roman Grandinetti, whose credits include Regina's Grocery & Deli on Orchard Street.

Baohaus 2.0 will feature previous favorites such as pork buns and beef noodle soup, plus an expanded menu for lunch and dinner service, per Eater.

The former East Village location operated for 9 years (2011-2020) at 14th Street between Second and Third Avenues. The original Baohaus, specializing in Huang's take on Taiwanese street food, debuted on Rivington Street in 2009.

Cecilia opened in August 2024. The bistro and wine bar closed after service this past New Year's Eve for a "reset."
For 31 years, Yaffa Cafe was home to Yaffa Cafe... closing in 2014.

Baohaus closed for renovations for now on 14th Street

Just noting that Eddie Huang's Baohaus has been closed since last Sunday... and will be so for another few weeks here on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...

Huang, the chef-author-TV personality, will reportedly open an outpost on the Bowery in Chinatown. (This location was seeking a full liquor license last month. Not sure what the outcome was.)

The quick-serve Taiwanese restaurant opened on 14th Street in 2011... the original Rivington Street location closed shortly after this.

Morning rush: Stand Coffee now serving in the back of Baohaus on East 14th Street

This past Saturday, Stand Coffee made its debut in the back of Baohaus, Eddie Huang's quick-serve Taiwanese restaurant at 238 E. 14th St. just west of Second Avenue.

"We were thinking there was some value in the times before restaurants and bars open in neighborhoods where the rent is too high or the demand too low for modest specialty coffee," Stand proprietor Bryan Hasho explained in an email.

So every day from 7-11:30 a.m., before Baohaus opens for the day, the Stand serves coffee from Greenpoint's Cafe Grumpy.

"We just carry our whole rig out the front door into our van when the Baohaus folks are ready to serve," said Hasho, who previously worked for Blue Bottle Coffee.

So far, he said that the reaction to the coffee has been excellent, albeit sparse. If the idea works here, then Stand Coffee will look to explore other spaces to serve from in the morning hours.

"[Baohaus] is our first so we're committing all our resources to making this one perfect," Hasho said, "but one of the really great things about the model is we can experiment with different shops and spaces and see what works."

BaoHaus signage now up on East 14th Street

As Eater first noted, chef/foodie personality Eddie Huang is opening a second BaoHaus location ... this one on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Among other things, the shop will feature a "Great Wall of Chinamen" with images of Connie Chung, Genghis Khan, RZA, Gizmo the Gremlin, William Hung, Confucius, Chairman Mao, Kung Fu Panda and Long Duck Dong.

BaoHaus 2 takes over the space that previously housed Thai Me Up. The sign in the window says opening in July 2011.
