Today in posts about angled parking on 2nd Street

The DOT recently resurfaced East Second Street between Avenue A and First Avenue.

And EVG regular Spike notes that the city put the angled parking on the north side of the block in the opposite direction of what it was...

We haven't heard about any plans on changing this section of Second Street from west- to east-driving traffic ... like it is between the Bowery and First Avenue.

Per Spike: "Either that's the eventual idea or the paint crew screwed up!"

Meanwhile, as for now, the Tacos Morelos stand is still facing the same direction...

[Updated] Milling about East Second Street tonight

In case your driving or parking plans were to take you to East Second Street between Avenue A and First Avenue tonight...

The street is scheduled for roadway milling, as the plentiful signage along the block shows... (some signs pointed to milling action on Friday evening, but I didn't see any)...

Despite all the signs, someone should tell the pigeons about the milling and temporary displacement of the buffet...

No signs just yet about when the resurfacing will take place.

And unrelated ... but while we are on this block... The TLC Tea House opened back on March 18...

They serve coffee, tea, sandwiches ... catering, in particular, to the various drivers (cabs, car services) who take a break on this block...

Updated 3/29

EVG reader Gacjon shared photos of the milling action last evening...

A reader alerted us to the fact the the Citi Bike docking station on the northwest corner of Avenue B and Second Street disappeared yesterday… this was before whatever that thing is called in the photo arrived to help resurface the street…

Rat battle on East Second Street

We've heard from several residents who live on East Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... These residents say that there is a rat problem at 188 E. Second St, a single-level structure that's home to the beverage distribution company.

Said one resident: "It's full of rats that run and in out all night. Dozens of them. People walk their dogs here. There are little kids. A restaurant next door. It's a real mess."

The residents don't think that the operators here are doing enough to curb the rat population. Calls to 311 haven't done much, the residents say. And now a sign campaign has started.

However, the Beverage folks have responded... providing their side of the story...

East Second Street gets a bike lane

EVG regular Spike passes along this photo with news that East Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue now has a new bike lane...

... and apparently no one told this guy, spotted walking in the bike lane...

Also, no word just yet how this will impact the double parking on this block.

Claim this land!

You know the empty lot over on East Second Street near Avenue D...?

Anyway, there are now signs on the Second Street side providing information on how you can use this space... Members of 596 Acres recently posted these ... (the Brooklyn-based group of gardeners have identified vacant lots throughout NYC ... they want to help empower local residents to take them over and make the land something useful and green ...)

It's a great opportunity to do something with this space... the surrounding area won't be green for too much longer. Behind this property... the Karl Fischer-designed, 33-unit apartment building is under way where 316-318 E. Third St. used to be... workers demolished the circa-1835 house back in March.

And to the east of this plot... on the corner of Houston and Avenue D ... a big development is in the works... But this particular parcel will remain empty, as I understand it...

Read more about 596 Acres in this Times feature from April.

Report: 12th-story 'Alphabet Plaza' in the works for Second Street and Avenue D

A Queens property owner plucked down $21 million for a 130,000-square-foot development site at Avenue D and East Second Street, The Real Deal reported tonight.

Kahen Properties bought six lots at 5-9 Avenue D and 306-310 East Second Street, and plans to break ground on a 12-story luxury apartment building this spring that will feature apartments in the $2,500 to $3,600 range.

Per The Real Deal's Katherine Clarke: "The building, which will include some affordable units as part of the 80/20 program, will have a doorman, rooftop terrace, gym and outdoor space."

In addition, there are plans for a "national tenant" to take up all 10,000 square feet of retail at the building dubbed "Alphabet Plaza."

Plans for a development like this first surfaced two years ago during a CB3 committee meeting, as the Lo-Down first reported.

The original rendering looked something like this:

During the meeting, the developer's name wasn't disclosed. His reps only said that he was a "former beer distributor," per The Lo-Down.

According to The Real Deal, Kahen Properties bought the land in a Dec. 22 deal from Simon Bergson, president and CEO of Manhattan Beer Distributors, the largest single-market beer distributor in the United States.

While Bergson's plans never materialized, it sounds as if Kahen is keeping the spirit of his development intact.

Aside from Alphabet Plaza, expect developments coming to East Third Street near Avenue D ... and Houston at Ridge ...

Looking at an elementary school that costs $31,900 annually on East Second Street

[Rooftop rendering via the World Class website]

Back in July 2010, we had a post about the World Class Learning Academy taking over the LaSalle Academy space on Second Street and Second Avenue. As we learned, tuition for the U.K.-based independent school (for ages 3 to 11) could go as high as $32,000.

Anyway, the school opened back in September ... yesterday afternoon, Business Insider dropped a feature about the school. Abby Rogers reported how the older kids are learning about chocolate. They have a tasting day. The students will also visit a local chocolate maker and learn about chocolate-related issues, such as fair trade.

"That's what really sets us apart from everybody else," Headmaster John Taylor said when discussing the school's unique take on learning.

As Business Insider noted, students in kindergarten through fifth grade pay $31,900 in tuition annually. There's also a $50 application fee and a one-time $2,000 "new student" fee.

Anyway, in case you want a look inside the school, there's a slideshow here.

Nicky's is now Vicky's on East Second Street

The other night EV Grieve reader Steven passed along word that Nicky's on Second Street just east of Avenue A was now called Vicky's ...

Sure enough... rather subtle switch from the N to V...

Simple name switcheroo?

More than that, actually. Nicky's co-owner Quynh Dang told us that they sold the Second Street location in the late summer ... and the new owner called it Vicky's! (Which gave Quynh a chuckle.)

So, if you want your Nicky's fix, you have two choices now:
