An outpost of Original Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches arrives on Avenue A and 13th Street

An Original Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches has debuted on Avenue A at 13th Street... EVG reader dwg shared these photos from last night...

The Nicky's logo matches up to the one that's out on Lorimer Street in Williamsburg.

As you may recall, there once (circa 2009) was a Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Second Street just off Avenue A. The family that owned the Nicky's then sold the business, and it became Vicky's in 2011.

THEN. Vicky's closed in 2013. THEN! The Vicky's became a Nicky's, but it wasn't the original Nicky's that was here. Then the not-original Nicky's closed in 2015.

ANYWAY. In the process of trying to find out if this outpost is from the folks who ran the FIRST Nicky's on Second Street (as well as the now-closed location on Nassau Street).

The corner space on Avenue A and 13th Street was home to Inkstop Tattoo, which closed last summer after 21 years here. Owner Eric Rignall is now working out of Long Island City.

Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches hasn't been open lately on East 2nd Street

Last April, a Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches reopened on East Second Street just east of Avenue A.

Anyway, we haven't seen the place open in about a week. There aren't any "closed for renovations" signs up on the gate or any outgoing voice messages.

Perhaps they are just on a late-winter break?

To recap from a previous post!

Vicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches took over the Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches space nearly four years ago. Vicky's then closed at the end of November 2013.

The folks at the all-new Nicky's said that they are the original Nicky's.

HOWEVER. We later emailed the family who ran the original Nicky's (and who still have two restaurants in NYC). Here's what they had to say:

"No. They are not the original Nicky's. We only have two locations now. One in the Financial District and one in downtown Brooklyn."

A family member said that they are aware of the name use here, but that it was OK.

We never thought that the new Nicky's was as good as the old Nicky's. Maybe others thought the same.

East 2nd Street is home again to a 'Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches'

EVG regular RyanAvenueA pointed out that a Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches just reopened on East Second Street east of Avenue A.

OK!

So to quickly recap the recent history here:

Vicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches took over the Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches space on East Second Street nearly three years ago. Vicky's then closed at the end of November.

On closer inspection, the menu for the new Nicky's looks similar to Vicky's…

Vicky's!

The new Nicky's!

Vicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches has closed on East 2nd Street

Vicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches took over the Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches space on East Second Street just off Avenue A two years ago… and, as several readers have noted, Vicky's closed at the end of November. For rent signs are up, as you can see in the above photo. (By the way, you can still find a Nicky's in Manhattan down on Nassau Street.)

As EVG regular Salim lamented to us in an email, this is yet "another low-key, affordable shop going away" … joining the recently shuttered Cafe Rakka on Avenue B...

Fortunately, the renovated Rakka Cafe from the same owners has reopened on St. Mark's Place.

Nicky's is now Vicky's on East Second Street

The other night EV Grieve reader Steven passed along word that Nicky's on Second Street just east of Avenue A was now called Vicky's ...

Sure enough... rather subtle switch from the N to V...

Simple name switcheroo?

More than that, actually. Nicky's co-owner Quynh Dang told us that they sold the Second Street location in the late summer ... and the new owner called it Vicky's! (Which gave Quynh a chuckle.)

So, if you want your Nicky's fix, you have two choices now:

99-C Nassau St.

Online ordering via Seamless Web available for this location

Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches closed for renovations on Second Street

Just catching up on items from the last few days... Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Second Street just off Avenue A is closed for renovations... if the sign out front is correct, then they should reopen on Thursday...

That was fast: Nicky's Pho and Lingua closed after just 3 months

In early February, we noted that Nicky's Pho had opened on East Fourth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

[Photo via EV Grieve reader Hanser]

Grub Street reports that they have closed. Says co-owner Billy Dang, "I made a big mistake for taking the spot, because there’s not enough traffic and it’s not making enough money."

Bet the people opening the former Tonda space down the street will love to hear that lack-of-traffic line. Meanwhile, Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches remains open on Second Street just east of Avenue A.

Grub Street also reports that Lingua on First Avenue near Seventh Street has closed after three months.

Per Grub Street: "Perhaps the menu, which offered a slew of innards, like tripe Florentine, lamb sweetbreads, and tongue, was a bit too adventurous for East Villagers' tastes."

Two Nicky's now for the East Village

On Friday night, we reported that the new location of Nicky's had a soft opening on East Fourth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

[Photo via EV Grieve reader Hanser]

The restaurant will be open in the next week.

Of course, there's already the Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Second Street just east of Avenue A. There was some speculation last spring that Nicky's may be leaving the neighborhood.

A member of the Dang family, who owns the four Nicky's in NYC, said they will continue operating the Second Street location. The family member also said they'd be looking for a liquor license at the Fourth Street restaurant.

[Updated] Second East Village outpost of Nicky's opens on East Fourth Street

As this photo from EV Grieve reader Hanser shows, it appears that Nicky's has a new location... here on Fourth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

And we've heard about it already from a commenter:

PLEASE HELP PLEASE HELP, I've just noticed a venue on E 4TH between A and B. Blasting music, Lady Gage, etc., loud people on phones, "Woo"'s from inside. Is this a special night or did some club just open up? It is SO LOUD. My building is on THIRD street and faces the back and I hear this hell and feel sick inside.

Do you know what this is? I can't make out the sign, it seems to be a red light up sign.

"Inexpensive eco-friendly" Italian restaurant coming to old Graceland space

The signs posted at the former Graceland space provide the details... eventually the owners will want a sidewalk cafe here...

And if you notice the address, it's 150 E. Second St., which also happens to be the address of Nicky's. I asked the folks at Nicky's if this meant they are moving. However, a family member said the restaurant is just for the Graceland space. The family member said they will find out in another four weeks if they keep the East Village Nicky's location. (They also have a shop in Boerum Hill and one coming to near City Hall...)

Meanwhile, the new Italian restaurant is one of many up for CB3/SLA review on June 14.

Nicky's reopens tomorrow

Nicky's owner Quynh Dang left us a note regarding yesterday's post on his restaurant closing for renovations....

We'll be open on Saturday. We did need to renovate and get some equipment repaired. Also, we have 2 more months on the lease...we are trying really hard to negotiate with the landlord since he wants to increase it to three times of what the space is worth. However, we ARE also currently working on our City Hall, NYC location on Nassau St. and we still have our Brooklyn location!

See you soon!

The Nicky's saga continues

First we heard they might be closing... then they were just moving a few blocks away ... and now, Nicky's on Second Street is closed for renovations? This makes no sense... especially if they do plan to move a few blocks away...

Nicky's staying in the East Village; Graceland moving out?

Following up on our scoop last week about Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Second Street possibly closing up shop...

An EV Grieve reader talked with another member of the Dang family. Per the reader:

"They will not be closing until the next 2 - 3 months ... it is up to the landlord. He says that they are going to be moving just a block or 2 away from the current EV location and will have more space, less rent and still play 'The Simpsons.' The FiDi location will be run by his sister."

And this:

"He also said that the deli around the corner, Graceland (not the high-end one) is going to be forced to close as well as the landlord wants a substantial amount more in rent."

Which, I suppose, makes sense: Graceland and Nicky's share the same building...

Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches leaving the East Village?

There's now a "store for rent" sign over Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches on Second Street just off Avenue A...

Usually this is a sign the business below is closing or moving. (Oh, and they are still open: These photos were taken before their business hours.)

I sent an e-mail to Nicky's to ask what was happening... a member of the Dang family responded: "I am not sure if my family will keep that location in the East Village but we will find out in the next month or two."

The family member confirmed that they are currently working on a new location in the Financial District....

And they also have a location in Boerum Hill.
