Kenny Scharf up next at the Brant Foundation

Art via The Brant Foundation

Kenny Scharf, a pioneer of the street art movement in the 1980s East Village, will be the subject of a major survey at the Brant Foundation next month.

The Foundation announced details yesterday:
Opening Nov. 13, the exhibition brings together over 70 paintings, sculptures, and objects created throughout the artist's expansive career, beginning with works from the late seventies. The survey is compiled from the Brant collections as well as major loans from institutions and private collections, including The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and The Broad (Los Angeles).

Kenny Scharf is co-curated by Peter M. Brant & Tony Shafrazi in close collaboration with the artist.
Tickets (here) for Nov. 13 – Dec. 22 are currently available, and the remaining tickets (Dec. 23 – Feb. 28) will be released in the upcoming weeks. The exhibition will be open Wednesday through Sunday.

Tickets are $20, $15 for students, and $15 for East Village residents. Admission is 50% off every Wednesday from 2-6 p.m.

The Brant Foundation's first show at 421 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and First Avenue in the spring of 2019 featured work by Basquiat — some 70 works collectively valued at $1 billion. Other exhibits include a career-spanning Warhol collection in the spring of 2023.

Friday's opening shot

Seen this morning outside the Brant Foundation on Sixth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue (thanks, Steph, for the pic!)... a step-and-repeat banner apparently leftover from last night's launch celebration...

Dom PĂ©rignon, which, along with Miller High Life is one of our favorite Champagne maisons, pays tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat with a special-edition Vintage 2015. (And no, you won't be able to order it down the street at the Cherry Tavern.)

DP previously collaborated on special-edition bottle designs featuring Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.

As previously noted about the show at 421 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and First Avenue...
On view from Nov. 1, 2023, through Jan. 7, 2024, this is the first time the collaboration has been the subject of a major New York exhibition since Andy Warhol & Jean-Michel Basquiat at Gagosian Gallery in 1997. The exhibition is traveling from Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and has benefited from the collaboration between the two institutions.
The Brant Foundation's first show here in the spring of 2019 featured work by Basquiat — some 70 works collectively valued at $1 billion. A career-spanning Warhol collection was here back in the spring.

Meanwhile, here are a few photos from the space the other day (this is simply an FYI and not a review of the show) ...
And be sure to check out the neighborhood view — to the north toward Seventh Street — from the fourth floor... photogenic even in the rain...
At the first show in the space in the spring of 2019, the Brant Foundation featured art by Jean-Michel Basquiat — some 70 works collectively valued at $1 billion. Brant later extended the show by a few weeks.

The Brant Foundation features 7,000 square feet of exhibition space over four floors. Brant bought the building — a former Con Edison substation and Walter de Maria studio — for $27 million in August 2014.

Created between 2018 – 2020, this series explores the evolution of Schnabel's artistic practice while making "At Eternity's Gate," a film about the life of Vincent van Gogh. The exhibition features 25 plate paintings that examine the theme of portraiture throughout art history.
Some details... the exhibit is open to visitors, free of charge. Advance tickets will not be required and walk-ins are welcome during open hours:

Thursday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

"Self-Portraits of Others," up through December, is the third exhibition to be held at the Brant Foundation 421 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.

In its first, from March to May 2019, the Brant Foundation featured an exhibit by Jean-Michel Basquiat, some 70 works collectively valued at $1 billion. Brant later extended the show by a few weeks.

The Brant Foundation features 7,000 square feet of exhibition space over four floors. Brant bought the building — a former Con Edison substation and Walter de Maria studio — for $27 million in August 2014.

Brant had said the space would host two exhibitions open to the public each year.

We'll always have the Mars Bar

The Brant Foundation, which has a state-of-the-art security system over on Sixth Street, put up some low-tech plywood this past week... as other properties did around the neighborhood ...

And the first message to arrive on the plywood (on the Seventh Street side between Avenue A and First Avenue): "I miss Mars Bar" with a frowny face...

Mars Bar closed on July 18, 2011, according to the tally marks on our wall.
