Scenes from a fancy new apartment

Our friend Cat Sitter in the City has a funny post from Friday evening... in which she got a glimpse across the way into one of those new buildings in the neighborhood with the floor-to-ceiling windows...there was a party going on...then!

"At one point, a couple went into the bedroom right off the living room and closed the door. Like the living room, the bedroom didn't have any blinds or drapes.

"The girl foraged through a dresser and grabbed a silky top. She was changing when the guy, who was probably her boyfriend, whipped off his khakis and underwear, threw his arms up in the air and started air thrusting. She doubled over laughing."

Lost: An orange, white and blue glass pin (head of a man)

I've been thinking about this handwritten note that I saw attached to a building on Ninth Street near First Avenue yesterday ...

The writing reminds of a relative on my mom's side of the family... I recall him being lonely and sad all the time. I recall that he made little circles to dot his i's. I thought he did that to try to cheer himself up. I'd like to know more about the lost pin. I thought about calling the number several times, but couldn't do it.

Where else?

Not sure if "Where else?" is even the Sears slogan anymore.... Anyway, saw several of these Sears price tags attached to various buildings around the neighborhood this morning... Who's responsible? Jokesters/artists/Sears employees. Dunno!

If anyone sees a good placement, like, on, say, the Christodora or an NYU dorm, please let me know!

Street sign shenanigans in the East Village

Some urban pranksters are on the loose... these street signs were spotted yesterday on 10th Street...

...and the fellow from Life was busy taking down the "Welcome to Hell" sign...

...we spotted this one on Sunday on Avenue A near 12th Street...Not sure if it's part of the same group or if it was being sold by one of the street vendors assembled that day... Given the number of golf bags that we see during the duffster season, this one should be made permanent...

An afterschool special

On the side of the Tompkins Square Middle School on Avenue B near Fifth Street. I took this photo Tuesday night. By last night, the wall was graffiti free again.

The New York Post discovers the East Village, squats

The Post has an exclusive cover story today about the city turning over the rights to the former LES squat Bullet Space to its residents.

It's difficult to tell how the paper feels about this.

The article begins:

Sometimes crime does pay.

The exclusive two-page spread includes an opinion piece by Henry Stern, the former city parks commissioner who is president of the nonprofit group New York Civic.

His take?

[G]ving away buildings in lower Manhattan to people who break into them and declare themselves owners should not be considered the new public policy of the city of New York.

Over the years, squatting, like graffiti, has been romanticized as an expression of popular will and an assault on the establishment. That may be true -- but it is not the best way to allocate scarce housing among a large and deserving population.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Bullet Space is the first of the former LES squats to take over ownership of building from city
