Imogene Beauty Salon arrives on 7th Street
The Imogene Beauty Salon is the new tenant at 80 E. Seventh St. ... replacing O.O.T.D., the women's boutique that opened last summer here between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
The previous previous tenant, East Village Cheese, closed here without any notice in December 2017 after two-plus years at this address.

O.O.T.D. opens on 7th Street
Back in May we heard that a clothing boutique was opening in the former East Village Cheese shop on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
The shop, O.O.T.D. (Outfit of the Day?), debuted this week here at 80 E. Seventh St. Don't know too much about them at the moment. O.O.T.D. has an Instagram account...

So long East Village Cheese
Workers removed the East Village Cheese sign today here on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue... Derek Berg shared these photos...
A clothing boutique will be taking over the space, per a source on the block.

The former East Village Cheese space has a new tenant on 7th Street
The for lease sign has been removed from the former East Village Cheese space on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue... we're told that a clothing boutique will be opening in this storefront, per a source on the block. Not sure at the moment what type of clothing store — say, a designer boutique or some kind of vintage clothier. Or both!

Former East Village Cheese space for rent on 7th Street
A for rent sign now hangs in the front window at the former East Village Cheese, officially bringing an end to the shop's two-plus years at 80 E. Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
EV Cheese quietly closed in early December. On Dec. 21, co-owner Lobsang Tsultrim was spotted at the storefront along with a Remove All My Junk truck. Before some of the perishable items had been discarded, the aroma of ripe cheese had been noticeable in the adjacent storefront.
Earlier this month, an EVG reader spotted workers hauling trash bags from the building's basement. The reader said that the smell of cheese — possibly from the content of the bags — was noticeable coming up from the sidewalk cellar doors...

East Village Cheese moved here from Third Avenue in September 2015.

East Village Cheese lives on in Season 2 of 'Jessica Jones'
An EVG reader shared this screenshot from season two, episode four of "Jessica Jones" ... showing the shop on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
In the scene (looks like summer!), Jess and Trish walk past the still-open East Village Cheese ... pause for a moment, and head inside East Village Wigs next door to question the owner. (I have never seen the show, so I'm not sure on the whys and what not behind what they are looking for...)
As for the non-Netflix version of the shop... still no sign of activity here...

The nonpayment of rent notice arrived the second week of January. And the shop has been quiet ever since.

The nonpayment of rent notice has arrived at East Village Cheese
As we've been noting, East Village Cheese at 80 E. Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue has been closed since the first week of December. (Recaps here and here.)
Yesterday, legal documents from the Civil Court of the City of New York arrived on the front door with a "Notice of Petition of Non-Payment" (aka the rent is past due).
A quick look at the paperwork on the door shows that the East Village Cheese owners owe $32,697 ...
The balance goes back to July ... with the full amount of $6,489.60 due each month for rent since August, per the paperwork, which is dated Dec. 19.
On Dec. 21, co-owner Lobsang Tsultrim was spotted at the storefront along with a Remove All My Junk truck. Before some of the perishable items had been discarded, the aroma of ripe cheese had been noticeable in the adjacent storefront. (The power at East Village Cheese has also been off since early December.)
East Village Cheese moved here from Third Avenue in September 2015. By April 2016, regulars started worrying about the shop's longterm financial health. For good reason, as it turned out.

[Updated] Someone is inside East Village Cheese
EVG reader Steph shared this photo from around 1:15 this afternoon... you can't quite tell from the photo, but the front door is open at the East Village Cheese shop, 80 Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
There's an unconfirmed report from a tipster on the block that the landlord (or landlord rep) is inside the storefront assessing the situation.
As reported yesterday, the shop has been closed for two weeks — and the electricity has been shut off during that time. No one has seen any member of the Cheese staff these past two weeks.
Meanwhile, the aroma of ripe cheese is now noticeable in adjacent spaces. (A commenter on the Fox News story on the EV Cheese suggested that "the smell is the filthy, disgusting liberals living on the sidewalk and alley.")
One reader is particularly concerned about any unpasteurized and raw-milk cheese products that might have been left unrefrigerated and in the open air. (You can read the FDA's statement on this here.)

Co-owner Lobsang Tsultrim was spotted at the storefront later in the afternoon... there was also a Remove All My Junk truck parked in front of the store.
Not sure what the next steps are. For now, Yelp is listing the shop as Permanently Closed.

Neighbor: East Village Cheese, closed now for 2 weeks, is starting to smell
[EVG reader photo from Dec. 8]
Two weeks have passed, and there hasn't been any sign of life inside East Village Cheese at 80 E. Seventh St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue. (See the previous posts here and here.)
The shop was last seen open on Dec. 7. And the gate has been down ever since, without any notice indicating a temporary or permanent closure. The telephone has been disconnected ... and worse, the power has been shut off inside the shop these past two weeks, neighbors say.
All this is particularly troubling to Julia Knox, who owns East Village Hats next door.
"The smell of cheese is seeping into my hat shop, and I am looking for ideas for how to get the place emptied before it rots," she said. "My biggest concern is that the smell is going to be unbearable pretty soon, and a potential rat problem."
Here's a photo via EVG reader Jeremy Block looking inside the space from Dec. 14. That bread and cheese is still there...

As I understand it, the landlord (76-80 East 7th Street Limited Partnership) is aware of the situation, though apparently there are legal concerns about entering the storefront.
East Village Cheese moved here from Third Avenue in September 2015. By April 2016, regulars started worrying about the shop's longterm financial health. "These guys never really got on their feet after the move," Knox said.
As previously noted, the place wasn't always a very patron-friendly shop on Seventh Street, with a cash-only policy and an early close that prevented way-home-from-work shopping, among other things ... including the lack of ambiance and suspect expiration dates, according to regulars.
Past news article on the shop list Lobsang Tsultrim and Thupten Tenphel, immigrants from Tibet, as the owners. They reportedly took over from its founder, Alvin Kaufman, in 2005.
Updated Dec. 22
NBC 4, ABC 7 and PIX 11 all picked up the story, though they didn't offer any new developments.
