A double feature tonight in Tompkins Square Park

The mini summer film series ends in Tompkins Square Park this evening with a double feature — "Encanto" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once." (The previous screening of "Encanto" was rained out.) 

"Encanto" will begin at 5 p.m. in the center of the Park, followed by poetry from Nuyorican Poets Cafe and pizza from Two Boots. "Everything," which won seven Oscars last year, starts at sunset. 

Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, the Loisaida Center, the Lower East Side Film Festival, Rooftop Films and Two Boots Pizza sponsored this summer series.

Free screening tonight in Tompkins Square Park: 'Slums of Beverly Hills'

As a reminder... there's a free screening tonight of "Slums of Beverly Hills," writer-director Tamara Jenkins's feature debut from 1998 with Natasha Lyonne, Alan Arkin, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Corrigan.

   

The screening will take place in the middle of the park (where the bands play), starting, per the flyer, at 7:30. There will also be some free pizza from Two Boots (while supplies last!).

A postponement for tonight's screening of 'Little Fugitive' in Tompkins Square Park

A summer movie series is returning to Tompkins Square Park

A summer film series is set for Tompkins Square Park for the first time in eight years. 

Yesterday, Assemblymember Harvey Epstein announced that he has teamed up with the Loisaida Center, the Lower East Side Film Festival, Rooftop Films and Two Boots Pizza "to bring the joy of watching summer flicks under the stars back to our neighborhood." 

Here's more about the four-film series that will take place on the multi-purpose courts/TF at Avenue A and 10th Street: 

More than simply showing movies, this crew of community leaders organized for free pizza while supplies last, along with pre-show entertainment. Each event starts at 8 p.m., and films commence at sunset. 

On June 26, "Encanto" (rated PG) will be shown along with a pre-show clown workshop by Matthew Silver and MC Bryan Fernandez. Short films "Love Letters to the Subway" (2023) and "Drumtalk" (2022) will precede the main feature. 

The family-friendly fun continues on July 24 with a screening of "Little Fugitive" (rated G). The Coney Island Circus Sideshow will provide the audience with a pre-show performance. The shorts for the night will be "Practice Space" (2024) and the Grand St. Settlement Film. 

On Aug. 29, enjoy live music and an appearance by Natasha Lyonne as we watch her in "Slums of Beverly Hills" (rated R). Director Tamara Jenkins will curate the short films. 

For the grand finale on Sept. 25, moviegoers will enjoy "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (rated R). Nuyorican Poets Cafe will present poetry, and Eden Martinez and the Loisaida Center will curate shorts. 

"Movies in the Park is about more than just movies, it's a chance to showcase local talent through our short film features and to bring people together for a positive community experience," Epstein said in a statement. "I am proud to bring this tradition back to our neighborhood."

In recent years, Tompkins Square Park has occasionally hosted family-friendly films in the Under the Stars series via NYC Parks and Films on the Green by Villa Albertine, the French Embassy, and the FACE Foundation (though not this summer). 

The last summer-long series came in 2016 via Howl! Arts and several local restaurants. Unfortunately, many of the Thursday evening screenings were rained out and rescheduled or canceled.

Two Boots was a previous sponsor for several years.

Flashback Friday: 'Touchez Pas Au Grisbi' in Tompkins Square Park

This past Friday night, the 2022 Films on the Green series came to Tompkins Square Park with a free screening of "Touchez Pas Au Grisbi,"  a 1954 French-Italian crime drama starring Jean Gabin, Jeanne Moreau and Lino Ventura.

EVG regular Daniel Efram shared a few images from this welcome summer-in-the-city event, where "a delicate breeze pierced the humidity," he wrote. 

This was the only Tompkins screening this time around... but upcoming nearby...

Tonight's free screening in Tompkins Square Park

If you're looking for a last-minute idea to spend some time outdoors tonight... the Movies Under the Stars series presents the box-office hit "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" on the asphalt in Tompkins Square Park.

The synopsis for the G-rated film: "When Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek "The Hidden World", a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first."

The film is set to start at 8 p.m. As of 7, no one had arrived yet for a good seat.

Movie Under the Stars tomorrow night: 'Hotel Transylvania'

The city's Movies Under the Stars program is underway... and tomorrow (Saturday!) night, you can watch a free screening of the 2012 family-friendly comedy "Hotel Transylvania" (yes, Transylvania is misspelled on the flyers) in Tompkins Square Park.

The city will screen some more family fare nearby this summer... first with "Moana" on July 18 on the Hamilton Fish ball courts on Pitt Street near East Houston...



...and "The Jungle Book" on July 20 at the Dry Dock basketball courts on 10th Street and Avenue D...



Per the Parks Department:

You should arrive before 7:30 p.m. to get your spot. Feel free to bring a blanket to sit on; there will be a limited supply of chairs available. Bottled waters are OK, but no glass. Reservations are not taken, so space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. All are welcome!

There's a free screening of 'Florence Foster Jenkins' in Tompkins Square Park Friday night

The city's "Movies Under the Stars" series comes to Tompkins Square Park Friday evening for a free screening of "Florence Foster Jenkins," the 2015 biopic that saw Meryl Streep earn her 20th Oscar nomination.

Here's the consensus via Rotten Tomatoes: "'Florence Foster Jenkins' makes poignant, crowd-pleasing dramedy out of its stranger-than-fiction tale — and does its subject justice with a reliably terrific turn from star Meryl Streep."

Rescheduled 'Romeo + Juliet' plays tonight in Tompkins Square Park

Last week's free film in Tompkins Square Park — the 1996 version of "Romeo + Juliet" with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio — was rained out. So the organizers are doing a make-up screening tonight.

The evening includes a food fair/fest starting at 5 with vendors from the Eastville Restaurant Collective, which includes GG's, Boulton & Watt and Huerta's.

Free tonight in Tompkins Square Park: 'Next Stop, Greenwich Village'

Tonight's free film in Tompkins Square Park is "Next Stop, Greenwich Village," a Paul Mazursky-directed comedy/drama from 1976. Per IMDB:

An aspiring Jewish actor moves out of his parents' Brooklyn apartment to seek his fortune in the bohemian life of Greenwich Village in 1953. He struggles to come to terms with his feelings about his mother's overbearing nature, while also trying to maintain his relationship with his girlfriend.

The cast includes Lenny Baker, Shelley Winters, Ellen Greene, Lois Smith and Christopher (Chris!) Walken.

Tonight's free film in Tompkins Square Park is 1975's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Another chance to see newlyweds Brad and Janet lost with a flat tire. (If only they had smartphones then!)



No word if toast and rice will be allowed into the Park. (And no cussing. And you have to wear a suit in the pool.)

As always, this is weather permitting... If it's a Thursday in the summer, then it will rain. Or so it seems. And there's a 50 percent chance of thundershowers tonight, according to our sources at The Weather Channel.

The Films in Tompkins series starts next Thursday with a free screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (this was on the slate in 2013, but rain canceled the screening) ... and concluding on Aug. 11 with the Leo-Claire version of "Romeo and Juliet."

Live music will precede each film as in previous years.

Let's try 'Dog Day Afternoon' again tonight in Tompkins Square Park

The Films in Tompkins series was set to get underway on July 8 with a free screening of "Dog Day Afternoon." But, being a Thursday in the summer, it was rained out.

So the organizers are doing a make-up movie tonight...



You may arrive at 6 for the film, which starts at sundown. The band City of the Sun will play a set before the movie.

Or! For another outdoor film option, head over to La Plaza Cultural on the southwest corner of Avenue C and East Ninth Street … where the third annual MoRUS Film Festival continues. Tonight: "Rezoning Harlem" and "The Rink." Visit the MoRUS website here for more details. The films start at 8 p.m. There is a suggested $5 donation.

Updated: (Canceled) Tonight in Tompkins Square Park: 'Chinatown' (Plus food fair)

Tonight's free movie is "Chinatown," Roman Polanski's 1974 classic that likely doesn't need any introducing. (According to the organizers, James Franco selected this film for tonight.)



Also tonight! There's a food fair before the film feature five East Village restaurants — Caracas Arepa Bar, Luke’s Lobster, GG’s, Boulton & Watt and Ducks Eatery. According to DNAinfo, who first reported on this, the food vendors will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and located adjacent to the park on Avenue A.

Meanwhile, there's live music (from Youth and Vanity) at 7:30 p.m., and the movie starts at sundown. You can head to the Films in Tompkins Facebook page for any updates, especially since rain is in the forecast this evening.

The organizers decided to reschedule "Dog Day Afternoon," which was cancelled due to the threat of rain on July 9, next week... Aug. 6.
