Report: Ethiopian restaurant in the works for Avenue B

Fu Sushi closed on Avenue B between East 11th Street and East 12th Street last August.

The Post reported yesterday that a new Ethiopian restaurant is set to take this space in the coming weeks. The place is called Haile Ethiopian Bistro, and owned by Menasie Haile and Gemada Hiwot.

The Post also noted that Prime & Beyond, the steakhouse at 90 E. 10th St. between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue, is leaving to be closer to the Lincoln Tunnel and its New Jersey location. Prime opened in July 2011... The restaurant never seemed all that busy when we walked by... Did you ever try it?

Former Fu Sushi space for rent

Fu Sushi closed on Avenue B after Aug. 26. (We heard from a reader who believes they are looking for a larger space somewhere.)

We saw the homemade for rent signs up early last week. And we just spotted a listing for the space at Streeteasy: $4,375 for 700 square feet.

All things considered (crazy rents around here, etc.) this seems ... reasonable?

Fu Sushi has closed on Avenue B

EVG reader Faces brings word that Fu Sushi has closed on Avenue B... Saturday was their last night in business here between East 11th Street and East 12th Street.

In June 2011, the DOH temporarily closed Fu Sushi ... and there were reports that the restaurant stayed open on a weekend despite the closure... (inexplicably) prompting three damning articles by the Post, who, after all that, never bothered to note that Fu Sushi had reopened.

Noted

On Avenue B, Fu Sushi is advertising its 4th Annual Naked Sushi Party. Have no idea when it is. If you do find out, then please let me know. I'll go as long as it's not the same night as the First Annual Naked Pizza Night at Papa John's.

Fu Sushi gets the OK to reopen

After several failed attempts, the DOH let Fu Sushi on Avenue B reopen. On Friday, the DOH revisited, and gave Fu nearly a clean bill of, um, health — just two violation points... that's down from the 99 points that shuttered the place back on June 23. So the the restaurant was able to reopen for the weekend.

After three damning stories, what are the chances that the New York Post notes that Fu Sushi has reopened?

The Fu Sushi plot thickens: Manager denies restaurant open during DOH closure

So, you've read about Fu Sushi allegedly/reportedly remaining open despite a DOH closure, a story that may or may not include a restaurant employee chasing a Post photographer down the street. (And why not just stop and take a photo of this?)

Last night, Al Jones at 1010 WINS interviewed Fu Sushi manager Sam Chung, who denied they were open. Per the story:

Manager Sam Chung [said] that he and his employees were “cleaning up.”

“All we’re doing is wiping and re-wiping and re-wiping,” he said.

Chung denied the neighbor’s complaint the store was open for business over the weekend despite the violations.

“The door was open while I was…doing some renovating work,” he said.

When asked by Jones if his restaurant was selling any sushi at the time, Chung replied “no sir.”

Fox also checked in with a piece last night...

This should be pretty easy to clear up. Anyone eat here this past weekend with a receipt to prove it?

The Post reports this morning that Fu failed its fourth DOH inspection yesterday.

Post reports that Fu Sushi employee chases Post photographer down the street

The Post picked up on reports from Neighborhoodr and here that Fu Sushi on Avenue B has been staying open even after the DOH closed it down for various violations. (And no credit from the Postthanks!)

Here's one passage from the article:

Workers raised the gate at the restaurant yesterday afternoon — but quickly closed when approached by The Post. One employee even chased a photographer down the street.

Reader: Fu Sushi remains open despite DOH closure

On June 27, we noted that the DOH had temporarily closed Fu Sushi on Avenue B near 11th Street. The restaurant was closed after receiving 99 violation points in its last inspection, which took place June 23.

Meanwhile, a reader over the weekend noted that "Fu Sushi on Avenue B was open for business and pretty busy. The bright yellow DOH sign is posted on their door, but at night they are keeping door propped open so no one reads it as they walk into the restaurant. I called 311 about it already, but they said it could take up to a month until this is addressed."

Neighborhoodr has also been covering this story. You can read their report here.
