Building out O'Flaherty's

As we've been reporting (here and here), O'Flaherty's is opening its new art gallery here on 44 Avenue A at Third Street. 

The space debuts tomorrow evening (Feb. 16) with a performance series titled "O’Flaherty's gelitin O'Flattering," which will also include the U.S. premiere of "Stinking Dawn," a full-length feature film by Liam Gillick and gelitin. (Find more details and the schedule here.)

EVG contributor Stacie Joy was with artist-curator Jamian Juliano-Villani when she first received the keys to the space on Jan. 2... and began renovations.

This space has been empty since Upright Citizens Brigade Theater closed UCBeast amid financial challenges in February 2019. The comedy venue opened in September 2011, and UCB took over part of the expanded Two Boots empire — the video store on Avenue A and the Pioneer Theater around the corner on Third Street.

O'Flaherty's did keep the small theater for screenings...

Juliano-Villani's friend and business associate Ruby Zarsky (one-half of Sateen) was also on hand... 

The awning arrived on Jan. 27...

Signage alert: O'Flaherty's on Avenue A

Signage and a sidewalk awning arrived Friday for the new home of O'Flaherty's, the art gallery coming to 44 Avenue A at Third Street...

As we first reported, artist-curator Jamian Juliano-Villani was moving her gallery into this space after a year at 55 Avenue C at Fourth Street (we covered the opening here, culminating with a barn burner of a show late this past summer).

The gallery opens on Feb 16, featuring a performance series and film screening by @gelitin_official in association with Austrian Cultural Forum New York and Federal Ministry — Republic of Austria: Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.

This space has been empty ever since Upright Citizens Brigade Theater closed UCBeast amid financial challenges in February 2019. The comedy venue opened in September 2011, and UCB took over part of the expanded Two Boots empire — the video store on Avenue A and the Pioneer Theater around the corner on Third Street.

O'Flaherty's opening an art gallery at the former UCBeast space on Avenue A

After nearly four years of sitting empty, 44 Avenue A has a new tenant: O'Flaherty's.

Artist-curator Jamian Juliano-Villani (pictured below in July) announced on Instagram yesterday that she was moving her gallery into this space between Third Street and Fourth Street.

Per the post:

We are THRILLED to announce that as of today, O’Flaherty's officially has a NEW HOME!!!!! Opening this February, we welcome you to our new location at 44 Avenue A (formerly the UCB theater). More details on our first opening soon.

O'Flaherty's had a year-long run at 55 Avenue C at Fourth Street (we covered the opening here), culminating with a barn burner of a show late this past summer. 

We're looking forward to hearing more about Juliano-Villani's plan for this venue.

And for some background... citing financial difficulties, Upright Citizens Brigade Theater closed UCBeast in February 2019. The comedy venue opened in September 2011, and UCB took over part of the expanded Two Boots empire — the video store on Avenue A and the Pioneer Theater around the corner on Third Street.

The Pioneer Theater, which screened indie, underground and cult fare, closed on Nov. 7, 2008, after an eight-year run. As owner Phil Hartman said at the time: "[I]t was always a labor of love and never commercially viable."

In the spring of 2021, Marcello Assante was looking to open Cinema Paradiso here... a cafe, restaurant, and center for cinephiles to enjoy foreign and independent features. However, Community Board 3 would not approve a full liquor license for all hours of the space, which Assante argued was necessary to help the venture be profitable.

Opening-night crowd prompts the NYPD to shut down the art show at O'Flaherty's on Avenue C

A large crowd prompted the NYPD to shut down a new art show on its opening night on Avenue C and Fourth Street. 

The action occurred last night at O'Flaherty's, the 10-month-old gallery at 55 Avenue C.

 

"The Patriot," the latest exhibit via curator Jamian Juliano-Villani (seen below early last night), was an open-call show where all work from artists was accepted — as long as the art met size criteria (under 36x36 and no wet oil paint).

In total, there were 700-plus pieces mounted floor to ceiling, crammed into every nook and cranny of O'Flaherty's. Inside the darkened space, gallery-goers were given mini-flashlights to explore the work. 

EVG contributor Stacie Joy was among those who viewed the exhibit before the NYPD arrived. 

First, the art...

With 700-plus artists with works inside, some 700-plus people showed up for the opening. A spirited group assembled ("like a sneaker drop," per one passerby) to see "The Patriot," with a line to enter winding up Fourth Street back to Avenue B. One estimate put the crowd outside at 1,000. 

The NYPD, with officers from the 9th Precinct and PSA4 (on Avenue C at Eighth Street), showed up at the gallery to shut down the opening. One officer called the crowded show "a safety issue," not to mention gallery-goers spilling onto Avenue C...

The show was expected to be up through the first week of August. Gallery hours are 2-8 p.m. Thursday-Sunday.
