King Kong alive on St. Mark's Place

Here's a work-in-progress look at a King Kong mural going up on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue (adjacent to David's Cafe) ... Steven spotted @moi.ny at work today...

This will be the second King Kong mural for the neighborhood (the other is via Dragon76 on 13th Street at First Avenue)...

He hopes to have the King Kong skyline completed by the end of the day tomorrow. @moi.ny also painted the Wu Tang logo on the other side of David's...

Here's the final work...

Updated 10/30

Someone thought it would be cool to put some dicks on it and vandalize the mural...

More bubble tea for the Bubble Tea District (aka St. Mark's Place)

Signage arrived yesterday at 19-23 St. Mark's Place for Mi Tea...

This will be the fourth U.S. outpost for the Hangzhou, China-based chain with 1,000 locations worldwide. Their speciality: Himalayan pink salted cheese tea drinks.

And they'll have plenty of competition on this block between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Other nearby options include Nohohon Matcha NYC, Spot Dessert Bar, Kung Fu Tea and CoCo Fresh Tea & Juice.

This storefront was previously Kulture, the tattoo-piercings-jewelry-smoke shop, which moved east several storefronts to the upper level of No. 31 in January.

Kulture arrived here in in 2011. Previously, the space was the short-lived St. Mark's Cafe, Red Mango, Quizno's and, until June 2008, the CBGB shop...

For rent on St. Mark's Place

The Edible Arrangements outpost on St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue has closed... a for lease sign is now in the front window.

This is one of five spaces for rent on the block... Satori Holistic Wellness & Beauty has been for lease since at least the beginning of the year...

... there's a new broker for the former Macaron Parlour, which moved to a larger space on Hester Street in the spring of 2017...

... the ground-floor at No. 116 has been converted into a storefront... and there's a second broker now for the address that hit the market in early June...

... and the for rent sign arrived about 10 days ago at the former Mr. Bing, the pop-up shop that wrapped up here back in the spring...

This block of St. Mark's Place lost 2 trees this week

On Wednesday, crews cut down the Callery pear tree from outside 26 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. The day before, a large branch fell from the tree, narrowly missing several nearby pedestrians and vehicles.

This wasn't the only tree lost on this block this week ... on Sunday morning, we saw that this young tree had been uprooted from outside 3-5 St. Mark's Place...

Not sure what happened... in any event, someone removed this tree on Wednesday...

Tribute to a fallen tree on St. Mark's Place

[Top 2 photos via Steven]

The city this morning deemed it necessary to remove the Callery pear tree from outside 26 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

Yesterday morning, a large branch fell, which, miraculously, missed the pedestrians and vehicles in the vicinity.

According to this site, the "Callery pear has a weak wood and branch structure ..." The tree appeared to show signs of rot.

Here's a look at what's left behind...

No injuries reported as large tree branch comes crashing down on St. Mark's Place

This tree branch fell this morning outside 26 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... EVG reader Maegan Hayward shared these photos...

Thankfully, despite being a busy corridor for pedestrians and vehicles (especially deliveries), the damage was minimal. Per Maegan: "Luckily it seems like no one was injured and nothing was damaged other than the tree."

The sidewalk bridge outside 19-25 St. Mark's Place across the street prevented the tree from possibly damaging the storefronts or hitting the pedestrians who were there at the time.

And 7 seconds of video, which shows just how large this branch is...

"It just seemed to fall out of nowhere," Maegan said.

Steven shared these photos... after the branch was (mostly) removed from the street...

End is nearing for the businesses on the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue and St. Mark's Place

On Friday, the E Smoke Shop on St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue announced their close-out sale ahead of shutting down at the end of this month...

As previously reported, a seven-story, 66,000-square-foot office building with ground-floor retail is slated for this corner. Permits were filed on March 15 to demolish the low-rise buildings here at 3 St. Mark’s Place, 23 and 25-27 Third Avenue.

The Continental literally announced their July 1 closing-night date back in January...

McDonald's and Papaya King have already shut down.

There haven't been any closing dates announced yet for Korilla BBQ or the smaller shops that line St. Mark's Place.

REEC picked up the 99-year leasehold for the properties for some $150 million, per The Real Deal last November. There still aren't any new building permits filed for the property, owned by the Gabay family.
