The Standard East Village sets reopening date

The Standard East Village has set a July 24 reopening date here on Cooper Square at Fifth Street.

This is the first of the Standard properties to reopen for guests. (The Standard London is back on Aug. 7, for instance; the Standard High Line on Sept. 7.) You can find their health and safety standards at this link.

The hotel went dark when NYC went on PAUSE in mid-March. A few other luxury hotels have already reopened in the city.

Meanwhile, the Standard's cafe returned to service this past Friday...

A 'new wave gay bar' for the Standard East Village

Out Magazine has a feature on chef Angela Dimayuga, the creative director of food and culture at The Standard International.

She has been working to relaunch narcbar inside the Standard East Village on Cooper Square at Fifth Street. According to Out, No Bar is Dimayuga's "boldest project to date."

Dimayuga reimagined the haunt as a "new age gay bar."* Trading the rainbow flags and kitschy tchotchkes of a typical West Village dive for banquettes upholstered with a custom cowhide print and a cocktail menu dotted with innuendos (one sipper is named "Spill the Tea"), she notes, "I want us to be chic. We deserve nice things."

But as a nightlife mainstay herself — Dimayuga throws a roving party called GUSH that centers lesbian and nonbinary femmes — she knows that, beyond any design tweaks she could make, queer and safer spaces are all about the folks who occupy them. With carefully curated programming and deliberate language about whom the space is for, she hopes to manifest a holdout where "the only rule is that it is inclusive and that it is a safe space for all types of folks."

No Bar debuts tonight.

* Updated: The No Bar fact sheet and Instagram account describe it as "a new wave gay bar," not "new age gay bar," per the quote in Out.

'Ring Your Rep' from the Standard East Village

An EVG reader pointed out the recent arrival of a Ring Your Rep phone outside the Standard East Village on Cooper Square...



This is a variation of the customized phone booths that the hotel debuted last August at its other properties. The phone dials directly to the U.S. Capitol Switchboard. (Not sure if that switchboard is open today.)

Per the Standard website:

Simply lift the receiver, and you'll be connected. Punch in your zipcode, choose the rep to whom you wish to speak, and leave your message.

When it's time to remove the Mickey Mouse statue with an erection from the Standard East Village

A little earlier today on East Fifth Street at the Bowery... from the rear, it appears that the movers are pushing just another Mickey Mouse statue... but from the front...



Word is Mickey was decor for a party at the East Village Standard... (And is this Andre Saraiva's work?)

3 things about Narcissa, the new restaurant at the Standard East Village

The Standard East Village is ready to debut its new restaurant.

Florence Fabricant has a quickie preview of it at the Times.

• The place is called Narcissa, named for a cow on hotel operator André Balazs’s upstate farm, Locusts-on-Hudson near Rhinebeck.

• The place will serve "as much produce as possible" from said farm, Locusts-on-Hudson.

• The place "will convey a breezy informality that suits the neighborhood," Ms. Fabricant writes.

While "breezy informality" sounds nice, it also sounds like a different place than what the Help Wanted ad for the restaurant described.

The Café Standard is open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday-Wednesday and until 4 a.m. Thursday-Saturday.

This from The Paris Review yesterday:

The Paris Review is partnering with the Standard, East Village to find a Writer-in-Residence. The idea is this: in January, a writer with a book under contract will get a room at the Standard, East Village, in downtown Manhattan, for three weeks’ uninterrupted work. Applications will be judged by the editors of The Paris Review and Standard Culture.

Ah, so the catch is that you have to have a book under contract.

As Richard Lawson put it at The Atlantic Wire:

[S]o you can't submit the Torchwood fanfic that you've been meaning to self-pub. No sir, this is only for legitimate writers. (As deemed by a small group of publishing people in New York City, anyway.)

A look at the old glass at the new Standard East Village hotel lobby

In recent weeks, you may have noticed that the Standard East Village unveiled its redesigned lobby ... one phase of the hotel's ongoing renovations.

The new entrance is located at 27 Cooper Square near the corner of Cooper Square and East Fifth Street ... in the tenement that the Cooper Square Hotel incorporated into its design after the remaining tenants wouldn't sell.

Anyway, take a look at the stained glass above the new lobby entrance... an EVG reader who lives nearby shared the story...



The windows were in place at the original building that dates to 1845 (not sure how old these particular windows are, though). As we were told, Hettie Jones, a longtime resident at No. 27, saw an old picture of the building... she got in touch with the previous tenant, Worth Auto Parts ... and the owner still had the windows in his garage. Jones apparently told this to hotel management, who then bought the windows, had them restored and put back up at the address...

Standard East Village unveils 1st phase of reconfigured ground floor with garden lobby

Back in April 2012, The Standard East Village unveiled major plans to alter parts of its public space. Among other things, the Standarders were going to expand the lobby and take over part of garden space that lined East Fifth Street. If memory serves, then there will also be an outdoor cafe along the Cooper Square side.

Anyway, as the top photo shows, the new garden-lobby entrance is now in use ... and here's a view of the new garden wall along East Fifth Street ...



At first glance it appears to make better use of the space than the former Cooper Square Hotel ... who used the East Fifth Street side to house an array of dead shrubbery and nice cars...

... and later a fence made out of Popsicles... and that damn Pimm's Cup sidewalk chalkboard sign....

Work continues on the new restaurant and sidewalk cafe at the Standard. Eventually it will all look something like this ...

Checking in on the Standard East Village plywood grafitti

The plywooding of the Standard East Village for its renovations finished up early last week... We wondered how long before someone tagged the wood... We noticed one little squiggle on the East Fifth Street side on Wednesday...

...and by Saturday...

The previous regime here at the Cooper Square Hotel was pretty speedy when it came to removing any tags, though that was on a permanent fence and not just construction plywood... The Cooper Square folks also commissioned four graffiti artists for that mural project on the hotel's south side...

The Standard East Village is sporting a lot of wood now

The plywooding of the Standard East Village continues.... now the wood stretches pass what was the entrance...

According to Hotel Chatter, the additions-subtractions will take up to six months to complete. That's a long time to keep that plywood graffiti free.

Bobby Williams notes the workers putting up the plywood late yesterday afternoon. As you know, the Standard East Village is putting in a Jai alai court moving its lobby to this side of the building (and adding a small enclosed bar).

The Standard East Village debuts its new awning

The Standard East Village is currently undergoing some major renovations on Cooper Square ... some progress to report. A new awning with the hotel's usual upside-down logo... I believe this entrance will lead to the new cafe ... at least based on the plans the Standarders submitted to CB3 in April.

We've heard from several readers about a large FDNY presence (10-12 fire trucks) outside the Standard East Village on Cooper Square this afternoon...
