Things to do in Union Square: Stand among the palm trees and shop at Macy's

There was a piece on Asia One Travel the other day titled "48 hours in New York on a shoestring."

Straightforward enough for this type of article. I just hope people aren't disappointed in Union Square...check out the Union Square photo that accompanied the piece...

Wal-Mart passes on Virgin Megastore space at Union Square, though are "still interested" in cracking the Big Apple

From the Post today:

Manhattan's retail rent rollback is causing Wal-Mart to give the city another look.

The giant discount chain has shopped for space in Union Square and among the big-box stores along Sixth Avenue in Chelsea, The Post has learned.

Wal-Mart recently passed on a proposal by Related Companies for a two-level store of about 57,000 feet in Union Square where Virgin Megastores and Circuit City are closing, sources said.

The company's real-estate scouts have also been roaming the area around 620 Sixth Ave., said the sources.

Wal-Mart spokesman Steven Restivo said the Union Square sites "were never under consideration." But he said the company is "still interested" in opening stores in New York, despite strong political and union opposition.

Is Walmart sniffing around Union Square?

Maybe! Patrick Hedlund has the story in his Mixed Use column this week in The Villager. Best Buy's name has also been floated, he reports.

Walking by the Lululemon Athletica shop

I'm always curious when I see storefronts being renovated, like the one at 156 Fifth Avenue at 20th Street. After quite a bit of work, it turned out to be a Lululemon Athletica shop, a place that sells yoga-inspired women's athletic wear. The store opened on Black Friday, Nov. 28. Fine. So I was a little startled when I walked by the store again this week...to see that's it's closing...and moving to a new Union Square location, which opens today. Dumb question, but why would you spend all the money to renovate a space only to close and move two months later...?

The future of Union Square?

Esquared notes that Union Square could become a retail ghost town. Indeed. I see a return to the days when roller-skate-wearing gangs decked out in menacing rugby shirts and denim overalls -- fresh from looting an Old Navy, perhaps? -- wreak havoc in and around Union Square. Just like the old days.

Yeah, laugh now.

No Rhyme & Reason

Rhyme & Reason, the card shop on 14th Street and Irving Place, is now officially closed. As Racked noted, the owner was facing a huge rent hike for this corner spot in the Zeckendorf Towers. What's to come? I have no idea! But it's a prime spot in NYUville. Also! There's a Duane Reade a block away on 14th and Third...and a Walgreens across the street. So this seems like a good spot for a drug store. Rite Aid?

Anyway, I figured something was up last month when the Christmas items went on sale...
