Rain delays: Today's free show in Tompkins Square Park with Madball is being rescheduled

The all-day rain expected today has prompted the cancellation of the free concert in Tompkins Square Park this afternoon featuring HC headliners Madball and Murphy's Law. 

The Tompkins gig will be rescheduled ... there's also a free show today (without Madball or Murphy's Law) at the Meadows in Brooklyn for fans who made the trip to NYC (or anyone who wants to go). Organizers will still collect money to benefit Ray's Candy Store on Avenue A.

Unfortunately, due to the weather, the park show will be postponed. There’s a smaller show happening in BK, for those who are in town… so go show some support! It's a Free show but donations are welcomed. Proceeds will go to Ray's Candy store… as well. Info is on the flyer. We're all bummed but the park tradition will continue. New date coming soon! Thanks!

Details about 'Hallowless,' a tribute to Jack Terricloth this Sunday

Here's info about an afternoon of music and a tribute in Tompkins Square Park this Sunday... details via the EVG inbox... 

Oct. 30 is the second annual gathering of Infernites in Tompkins Square Park. Fans of the circus punk cabaret collective The World/Inferno Friendship Society will gather to celebrate the life of their departed lead singer, Jack Terricloth. 

For 23 years, the Halloween-obsessed World Inferno band leader dependably threw an annual October bash called Hallowmas. Their lovingly devoted cultish fanbase would descend upon New York year after year to attend the festivities. Tragically, Jack passed away in May 2021 and World/Inferno's Hallowmas tradition ended. 

After a Halloween exhibition of Jack's artwork last year at C-Squat, fans gathered in Tompkins Square Park and played cover songs. Out of respect for not calling the event by the same name, the fans dubbed their gathering "Hallowless" and said they would be back next year to once again pay their respects. A tradition was born, the future is now, and Hallowless 2.0 is happening Sunday at 1 p.m. 

Jack Terricloth lived in the East Village from 1991 to 1994. He tended bar at The Continental and volunteered at Reconstruction Records. While in the LES, he fronted the punk band Sticks & Stones. After starting The World/Inferno Friendship Society in 1997, they went on to terrorize LES venues for the next two decades. World Inferno regularly played at ABC No Rio, Brownies, CBGB, Mercury Lounge, the Knitting Factory and the Bowery Ballroom. 

Throughout the past year, friends and family put together a tribute record that is coming out on Oct. 30. Proceeds going to benefit MusiCares. Hallowless in Tompkins is part of the record release celebration.

After the Hallowless celebration, the space in the Park will turn over to the Nick Zedd film festival at 6:30 p.m.

Here's a flashback to last Saturday ... when the four members of RebelMatic brought their brand of punk and funk to Tompkins Square Park.

The show also featured South Bronx legends 24-7 Spyz, Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, Incendiary Device and Butterbrain.

An end-of-summer appreciation: InCircles

We’re hearing from some neighborhood residents about how much they enjoy the free summer concerts in Tompkins Square Park and the joy they bring. 

In an ongoing series looking at musicians busking, we focus on InCircles, who have been providing, along with a newly formed production company ShowBrain, summer weekend concerts locally.

InCircles are Jewlee Trudden on vocals and guitar, Ozzie Silva on drums, and Matt Middleton on bass. After a recent show, I talked with the band about their history together and why playing Tompkins is so important to them. 

What is the band’s origin story? 

Jewlee: I started the band under various monikers in high school. After many band members coming and going over the years, Ozzie and I eventually came together and realized it was a partner-in-crime situation. Dream team and whatnot. We started playing together a year or so before Stable 8 EP came out in 2015. 

However, the members of InCircles have all played music in multiple projects and met in the local music scene, eventually playing a show together in our respective bands. 

Ozzie: Yeah, Jewlee and I played a show together while I was playing guitar in a small punk band called Stupid Naturals. We shared the same bill with InCircles, stayed connected, and a few months later, when they needed a drummer, I tried out and nailed the audition! We took a break for a part of 2019 and all of 2020, but we’re back at it now. Full force! 

How would you describe your sound? And how did the InCircles name come to be? 

Jewlee: Honestly, the band name came to be in a not-super-deep way. I think I saw it written on a window or something and was like, “eh, that’s kinda cool...” It’s not a Sunny Day Real Estate reference. A lot of people ask that. Sorry y’all. 

However, it’s taken on a deeper meaning over time. Which honestly feels kind of cooler to me. It can be an in-flux kind of thing. Right now, to me, it means everything comes full circle. Maybe time isn’t linear. It’s easy to fall back into old habits; come back to relationships, romantic or otherwise, that maybe should’ve been left behind. Energy can’t be created or destroyed. Plenty of different applications; maybe the listener can decide for themselves what it means. I’d describe our sound as a fruity and bloody blend of high-energy rock-n-roll with some punk thrown in.

You play a lot in the East Village, yet band members don’t live in the neighborhood. What draws you to the area? Why is Tompkins Square Park especially meaningful as a place to play? 

Ozzie: It’s New York City! We’re so lucky to live in a city with such a diverse group of people who appreciate the music and arts. It’s harder to convince people to come to a venue and much easier to bring the music to the people and create a following from there. Especially considering [the pandemic during] 2020 and 2021. A lot of people do not like to go to venues because of the fear of Covid, so it was much easier to play out in open spaces. Plus, it can be more fun than the traditional circuit! And Tompkins Square Park is a classic one. So many bands paved the way for us there. 

I caught a set of yours at ABC No Rio maybe eight years ago or so, a very high-energy punk show. How has the band’s sound changed since then? 

Ozzie: I’m not sure how much it’s changed yet to the public. We’re working on new songs so we’ll let the people decide from there.

What’s next for the band? 

Ozzie: Recording and releasing some singles, touring in the fall and continuing to play and connect with other bands!

The 34th annual Tompkins Square Park Riot reunion shows are happening this weekend

The free concerts commemorating the 34th anniversary of the Tompkins Square Police Riot of Aug. 6, 1988, are happening this weekend.

Bands are set to play Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 p.m. 

On Saturday, they'll be vegan and non-vegan tacos of all sorts by Rachel Jean, who's also in Bitch Switch (making their NYC debut).

Puke Island returns to Tompkins Square Park

The 10th edition of Puke Island takes place tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, July 24) in Tompkins Square Park (and, as it happens, a day after Punk Island).

Scheduled to play:

• 4:15 — Iconicide 
• 5 — Hell's Teeth 

Per the invite: "NONE of the bands performing at this event have ANYTHING to do with one another, other than two simple words: GOOD MUSIC."

There's a slate of bands on tap this afternoon in Tompkins Square Park... headlined by the high-energy rock of InCircles — one of the show's organizers.

The show is expected to run from 1:45 to 6 p.m.

Pinc Louds headlines afternoon of bands today in Tompkins Square Park

There's a free slate of bands today (Sunday!) in Tompkins Square Park from 2-6. 

Local faves Pinc Louds headline (set time for the band's quirky cheerfulness: 4 more like 4:50 p.m.) ... it also marks the last full-band show with Raimundo, the oringal drummer for Pinc Louds. (He is moving on to "new musical and creative adventures.") 

It's a good bill that features the high-energy rock of InCircles ... the gloom punk of Desert Sharks ... and singer-songwriter Marley.

A memorial show in Tompkins Square Park for Al Landess

Today is the birthday of Al "Hammerbrain" Landess. He would have been 55 years old. 

The longtime local resident and veteran of the NYC hardcore scene died on Feb. 15 of cancer. 

There's a memorial show in his honor tomorrow (Saturday, May 14) starting at 2. Here's info via the EVG inbox... 

A veteran of Riot Days in and around Tompkins Square Park from 1988 to 1991, Al energetically played countless punk shows in the park with Hammerbrain and with Damned Kids, his stage presence always coming through. 

Join us as we present a memorial event in Tompkins Square Park to honor him, featuring friends and bands that knew and played with Al over the years. 

There will also be an open mic between acts, during which anyone who would like to say something about Al can share with us. 

Performers include:

At the hardcore matinee in Tompkins Square Park

Tompkins Square Park played host to a hardcore matinee Saturday afternoon with a 6-band bill: Wisdom in Chains, Burn, the Capturers, Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law and Madball...

As the photos show, there was a large crowd gathered (not quite as many people as the 2021 edition, and without the controversy)...

And it was an active day on and off the stage... EVG contributor Stacie Joy was on the stage and shared the view from this vantage...
