According to the NYPD, the man followed a 44-year-old woman into an elevator on First Avenue and Third Street (presumably Village View). As the doors closed, the man pulled out what looks like a screwdriver and demanded her wallet.

He reportedly took $100 from the wallet and handed it back to the woman.

In separate incident on Wednesday, a man tore off a gold necklace — valued at $2,000 — from the neck off an 86-year-old woman while she waited for an elevator at Peter Cooper Village on First Avenue. The Daily News has more details here.

Report: East Village resident arrested in hockey-stick assault

[Screengrab from CBS 2]

An East Village resident is under arrest after a road-rage dispute turned deadly late Saturday night in Chelsea.

According to the Post, Kohji Kosugi, who was walking, allegedly attacked Uber driver Randolph Tolk, 68, at West 20th Street and 11th Avenue with a hockey stick.

The details, as reported by the Post:

Tolk was driving his Toyota Camry southbound and stopped at the crosswalk when Kosugi, who was on foot, began tapping on its hood with his stick, a witness told police.

They continued arguing until Kosugi used the hockey stick to knock the older man to the ground, then stomped on his chest, cops said.

Tolk, a grandfather of three, got back into the car and headed south, driving about half a mile before crashing into the center divider near Jane Street, cops said.

Paramedics responded and rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital, where Tolk, who lived in West New York, N.J., was pronounced dead.

Kosugi ran away into the Chelsea neighborhood, but was arrested around 2:40 p.m. and charged with manslaughter, cops said.

Kosugi, 39, had been at Chelsea Piers. Police found him by checking surveillance footage there, CBS 2 reported.

Per CBS 2:

Police have not made it clear whether Tolk was killed by the blow to the head, or whether it disoriented him and he died in the crash. The New York City Medical Examiner’s office will determine the cause of his death.

The Post said that Kosugi lived on East 10th Street, where he apparently wasn't too well-known.

A woman who lives next door to Kosugi on East 10th Street ... said: "I've only seen a woman leave that apartment. I’ve never seen him."

"I wasn't sure why the police have been here all day. We don't talk to our neighbors that much," she said.

"It's scary that…he lives next door to me and the cops have been here all day and I had no clue."

Updated 5:30 p.m.

Kosugi appeared in court today.

To the Post:

Defense lawyer David Jeffries argued in court that the alleged attack came only after Tolk got out of his car, and that prosecutors would have a hard time connecting it to Tolk’s death following the crash about half a mile away.

Bail for Kosugi, who works at the Nakamura NYC restaurant on Delancey, was set at $500,000 cash or $750,000 bond.

In a separate story, the Post interviews Kosugi's teammates who he played hockey with at Chelsea Piers.

Kosugi played in back-to-back games, at 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., before Saturday’s fatal incident, the teammate said. He played in two games prior to the altercation. "Kosugi, a center, scored two goals during the first game, in which the Tsunami beat the Wild Turkeys, 5-3."

Meanwhile, the Daily News reported that the victim had his own history with the police.

In January 2012, city marshals were towing Tolk’s car and he refused to get out, police said.

Police arrived and tried to take him out of the car. He took a swing at them, then bit an officer hard enough to draw blood.

He was charged with assault, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. The case is sealed.

Cops busted Tolk again on Oct. 1, 2014 for assault, resisting arrest and menacing as a hate crime. That arrest is also sealed.

DA: Man sentenced to 40 years in prison for November 2015 rape in East River Park

A man who attacked and raped a 26-year-old woman jogging near the FDR Drive and Cherry Street in November 2015 was sentenced to 40 years in prison today.

Here's part of the news alert from the DA's office:

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of Paul Nies, 30, to 40 years in state prison and 20 years’ post-release supervision for raping and robbing a 26-year-old woman who was jogging in East River Park in November 2015.

On September 12, 2017, the defendant was convicted by a New York State Supreme Court jury of the top counts in the indictment against him, including Rape in the First Degree, Robbery in the Second Degree, and Strangulation in the Second Degree.

“This was a brutal stranger assault, and I commend the victim for her bravery in bringing her attacker to justice, as well as the prosecutors and members of law enforcement who worked tirelessly on this case,” said District Attorney Vance.

As proven at trial, at approximately 7:30 p.m. on November 25, 2015, NILES attacked a 26-year-old woman as she was jogging in East River Park and forced the victim to move to a different area of the park, where the defendant sexually assaulted her. Following the attack, Niles took the victim’s phone and credit card, which he later used at a fast food location in Brooklyn.

As The Lo-Down reported, at the time of the attack, "local residents complained about poor lighting in East River Park." A reader told the Lo-Down today that the new lighting is not working at this time.

UPDATED: Avenue B resident stabbed during push-in robbery

Updated 6/629

The NYPD said that this was actually a drug deal gone bad.

A 31-year-old resident was repeatedly stabbed when a man pushed his way into her apartment on Avenue B near 13th Street last night, according to published reports.

The woman reportedly heard a knock on her front door at 8:30 p.m.

Per DNAinfo:

She opened her door a crack, but then the stranger shoved his way in, stabbing her repeatedly in her torso, arms and hands, police said.

The suspect then grabbed $500 and fled.

The resident's injuries are not considered life-threatening, authorities said. She was in serious but stable condition at Bellevue.

ABC7 spoke with a neighbor of the victim.

"It's crazy," one building resident said. "They need to focus on those doors and security and locking them."

The resident, who did not want to be named, believes an open security door may have given a suspect access to the building.

"It's always open," the resident said. "And nobody has fixed that security buzzer. There are a lot of issues."

So far, the only description of the suspect is as follows, via DNAinfo: "He's about 18, 5 feet 10 inches and 160 pounds, police said. He was last seen in blue jeans and a red shirt."

1 explanation for the shortage of Rogaine and Crest Whitestrips at the Avenue B Duane Reade

Police say that two suspects have knocked off eight Duane Reades throughout NYC, taking 44 boxes of Rogaine and 54 boxes of Crest Whitestrips, among other items, in the process, DNAinfo reports.

The East Village was, unfortunately, not immune to this crime spree, as the Duane Reade on Avenue B and Second Street was hit on Aug. 13. During this early-morning visit, the suspects allegedly stole 15 boxes of Rogaine, two boxes of over-the-counter medication and 14 boxes of Crest whitening strips, DNAinfo reports.

Given the number of Duane Reade locations in the area (800? 9,000?), we thought you should be aware of these incidents and think about backup brands to Rogaine and Crest just in case.

Though not mentioned in the article, it's likely the suspects are taking the stuff to resell (based on previous accounts of these stolen items around the country)... as opposed to making some kind of homemade drug or peroxide-based dessert. (A box of Crest whitening strips cost upwards of $40.) There isn't any ingredient in a teeth-whitening strip that can be considered dangerous. And minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine. It may cause dizziness. This effect may worsen if you take it with alcohol or jump up and down really quickly.

The DNAinfo piece has a description and photo of the suspects.

City changes way it will treat people drinking or urinating (or both) in public

[Pee Phone™ photo from 2014]

Well, we somehow missed this announcement on Tuesday... via the DA's office...

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., New York City Police Department Commissioner William J. Bratton, and Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced a new initiative to change how individuals who commit low-level offenses are processed in Manhattan.

Beginning on Monday, March 7, 2016, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office will no longer prosecute most violations or infractions, and the NYPD will no longer arrest individuals who commit these offenses – such as littering, public consumption of alcohol, or taking up two seats on the subway – unless there is a demonstrated public safety reason to do so.

This initiative will enable the NYPD to devote its resources to investigating serious crimes, while further reducing the backlog of cases in Criminal Court. The issuance of summonses instead of arrests is expected to result in the diversion of approximately 10,000 arrests that would be prosecuted in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Public urination is also on the list of low-level offenses, per published reports.

Will the city's new policy make you more likely to urinate in public?

Tall man allegedly steals expensive statue

A man named Kitty Rotolo, who has reportedly been in and out of jail since 1985, walked into Nadaeu Furniture on East 11th Street and University Place on Saturday.

He picked up a gold-plated statue of Tara, the Hindu goddess of universal compassion valued at $39,940, and ran out the door, the Daily News reports.

A store manager followed Rotolo, who, at 6-8, was hard to miss. Someone alerted an NYPD patrol car nearby. As the police approached, Rotolo reportedly stopped, handed Tara back to the manager and apologized.

According to the News, he remains in jail held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
