Another track from an album we really liked in 2025... here's "Blackest" from Pa'ahi II via The Raveonettes, the indie-rock Danish duo who also put on a great show at the Bowery Ballroom in October.  

It's a sin

 

A favorite EVG release this year includes "Tripla" by Miki Berenyi Trio.

The video here is for the single "8th Deadly Sin." 

Berenyi, the former singer/co-guitarist of early 1990s dream-pop favorites Lush, has also published a damn good memoir, "Fingers Crossed: How Music Saved Me From Success."

A very Banshee Christmas

 

A Christmas classic to share... here is Siouxsie and the Banshees, featuring Robert Smith looking as if he's in a Lost World on the cymbals, covering a traditional French Christmas carol called "I'l Est Né Divin Enfant" ("He is born, the divine child.") 

The cover was a B-side released in 1982.

Hearing 'Aidan'

 

The shoegaze-y, psych-rock debut record from the Alabama-based duo Sister Ray Davies is now out... the video above is for the first single, "Aidan."

A 'Star' is worn

To here knows when…

 

Going back to 1988 for My Bloody Valentine's single "You Made Me Realise," roughly when the legendary shoegazers started to bring the noise. 

The band has been closing their four-date UK and Ireland tour this week (first live shows since 2018!) with this track ... adding about six minutes of unbridled jet-engine-level distortion to the outro. 

Videos from the Dublin, Manchester and London shows this week capture MBV back in full, deafening form. No word yet on any U.S. dates.

Your star will shine

 

Revisiting a great song. The video here is for "Fools Gold" by the Manchester-based Stone Roses, released in the U.S. in 1990, and one of the great indie anthems. 

The band's bassist, Gary "Mani" Mounfield, died yesterday at the age of 63. 

RIP, Mani.

Gut check

 

They are Gutting a Body of Water (TAGABOW) dropped their fourth album, Lotto, a few weeks ago — a more guitar-forward turn for the Philly noise collective. 

The above video is for "rl stine," a track about a friend navigating a rough stretch. 

TAGABOW plays the Bowery Ballroom on Dec. 11. (Live, the band performs facing each other in a tight circle — always something to see.)

Blade runners

 

We've been enjoying Die Spitz's debut album Something to Consume, now out on Third Man Records. 

The video here is for "Throw Yourself to the Sword." 

The Austin, Texas-based quartet plays Bowery Ballroom on Nov. 18.

From 1996, Luna covers Donovan's "Season of the Witch" ... a version that also appeared on the "I Shot Andy Warhol" soundtrack.

Night moves

 

The above video for "Ascension" is from the recently released debut album by the Manchester, UK, duo Nightbus — an eclectic mix of moody nocturnal pop and post-punk.

Pour some Sugar on me

 

Going back to January 1993 for this video of "If I Can't Change Your Mind" from Sugar's debut album, Copper Blue. 

If you are a fan of Sugar and Bob (Hüsker Dü) Mould, then you'll likely have heard about the 2026 reunion... Sugar will play two nights at Webster Hall on 11th Street in May.

To whom it may 'Concern'

 

Here's the first video from Tough Darlings, a relatively new band that features some local music veterans (Alice Donut, Wharton Tiers Ensemble, etc.).

The video is for "You of Your Concern." 

Meanwhile, you can see them live on Oct. 26 at Berlin on Avenue A.

'Begin' the begin

 

The LA-based Goon recently released Dream 3, another record full of dreamy psych-rock. 

The video here is for "Begin Here." 

Pretty last minute, but Goon is headlining a show tonight at Trans Pecos in Ridgewood.

Eyes wide shut

 

Local band Skorts (an EVG Bands we like alum) debuted a new video this week. Check out "Burden."

Skorts is our tour this fall, with a European leg coming up later in the year.

Fury road

 

Something to Consume, the first record from Die Spitz, a quartet from Austin, Texas, is out now.

Somebody to love

 

Crazy and the Brains is one of the bands on the bill for the free Show Brain show on Sunday afternoon in Tompkins Square Park. Anticipated set time on Sunday: 3:50 to 4:25.

The band got its start playing at the late, great Sidewalk Cafe on Avenue A and Sixth Street (soon to be Corner Bistro).  

Whisper to a 'Sting'

 

NYC band Puzzled Panther will be headlining the next (and last for 2025) Show Brain show in Tompkins Square Park on Sept. 7.

Brooklyn's Nation of Language has a new record, Dance Called Memory, out on Sub Pop next month.

Nation of Language's mid-’80s-inspired sound (OMD! Human League!) gains extra punch on stage ... catch them at Warsaw on Sept. 18-20.

We are fans of Nabihah Iqbal, a musician, writer and DJ from London. Iqbal has been living locally lately, and on Sept. 8, she will be playing with a full band at Night Club 101 on Avenue A. (Tickets.)
