Go see a play tonight in a laundromat on Avenue A

Longtime East Village resident Emily Rubin shared details about her latest laundromat production… her Dirty Laundry: Loads of Prose show tonight features playwright/director Lizzie Olesker at the Gentle Wash Laundromat at 97 Avenue A…

Read more about tonight's performance here. Read an interview with Rubin in Time Out here.

Happy news for Lucky's Dry Cleaners and Laundry on East 11th Street

At the end of November, we reported that Lucky's Dry Cleaner and Laundrys would have to close… in part because the landlord apparently wanted to break proprietor Linda's lease while she took an indefinite leave of absence to care for a family member in China.

However, EVG reader Brian Katz happily passes along an update on the situation here. Linda's landlord is allowing her to leave to attend to her family while also allowing her to transfer her store (for the duration?) to her good friend who has more than a decade of experience running a laundry and dry cleaners.

Today in news about East Village laundromats and dry cleaners

As EV Grieve reader Brian Katz told us Saturday, Lucky's Dry Cleaner and Laundry on East 11th Street is closing today. (Read the post here.)

As for other laundromat/dry cleaner news... the laundromat that Mimi ran at 204 E. 10th Street closed earlier this year due to a rent hike... and, at the time, we made the obligatory comment that we really need more dessert places around here, which we figured would come next to the space. Ha. Well! Check out the new dry cleaner/laundromat in the space — Le Pressing! (Thanks to Blue Glass for the tip.)

And over on East Third Street near Avenue A... several readers recently pointed out that the East Village Launderette has closed... we don't know too much else about what happened... or what might be next. (Likely not a bookstore.)

Reader report: Last day for Lucky's Dry Cleaner and Laundry

EV Grieve reader Brian Katz shares the following:

Lucky's Dry Cleaner and Laundry on 11th St. (520 East 11th St.), between Avenues A and B, owned and operated by Linda, one of the kindest people and representative of all that is wonderful about our village, will be closing today at 6 p.m. She has been run out due to a variety of circumstances (chiefly, a landlord who wants to break her lease and raise her rent while she returns to China to care for a family member) and must shutter her little shop, for good, today.

Not only has she offered her obvious business services to our immediate neighborhood, but she accepted mail deliveries for ALL her neighbors and never, ever expected anything in return.

Updated: Per the comments.. she will remain open through tomorrow now.

And now, the last post ever about a laundromat at 173 E. 2nd St., maybe

[EVG file photo]

The end and a new beginning.

Closure on the Klean & Kleaner saga on East Second Street. The laundromat here between Avenue A and Avenue B had been on the market for use as a bar-restaurant. The Living Room unsuccessfully tried to relocate here. The place then closed in the middle of July... then reopened as a laundromat a few days later under new ownership.

And now, the laundromat has unveiled its new sign. Please welcome Fresh Laundry & Cleaners.

The Free Dry with washer use (details!) remains in effect through September.

Laundromat saga comes full cycle on East Second Street

So, some closure on the Klean & Kleaner saga on East Second Street. The laundromat here between Avenue A and Avenue B had been on the market for use as a bar-restaurant. The Living Room unsuccessfully tried to relocate here. The place then closed in the middle of July... then reopened as a laundromat a few days later under new ownership.

As the signs point out, new efficient washers and dryers are coming soon.

And that's not all. You can dry for free after 6 p.m., though only "with wash machine use." So no cheating.

Soap opera shocker: Klean & Kleaner reopening as a laundromat

Wow. Klean & Kleaner closed down on East Second Street this past weekend ... the laundromat here between Avenue A and Avenue B had been on the market for use as a bar-restaurant...

Word spread among readers yesterday that a laundromat is back. EVG Facebook friend Edward Arrocha passed along the following: "Klean & Kleaner will reopen as a laundromat. It was sold to a different owner and the washing machine doors were returned. I do not know if it will be Klean & Kleaner or if it will have a change of name."

Indeed, a handwritten sign on the door yesterday courtesy of RyanAvenueA notes the return of the laundromat. No word on how many of the Klean & Kleaner staff will catch on with jobs here.

As previously reported, the owners of the Living Room on Ludlow Street were hoping to take over this space, though the CB3/SLA committee turned down that proposal in May.

BoweryBoogie reported this from that CB3 meeting:

As it stands, this stretch of Second Street was grandfathered into a general residence district, and doesn’t allow for any performances with cover charges. There was reportedly contact with the DOB to settle this issue, but the Living Room hadn’t heard any news as of last night. And they didn’t have the luxury of laying over the application another month due to landlord/lease constraints, so a vote had to transpire.

Word is the landlord figured that the space would sit empty ... and found a new owner willing to pay higher rents to run a laundromat.

Reader report: Klean and Kleaner has closed

[File photo]

As we reported last September, Klean & Kleaner, the laundromat at 173 E. Second St. between Avenue A and Avenue B, was on the market for use as a bar or restaurant.

Off and on during the last few months, we heard that the laundromat was closing very soon... On April 30, we thought the end was here. "They were loading trucks all afternoon. Wouldn't let me drop off clothes unless I was ok picking up in '2-3 days' at an undefined location," said one neighbor.

However, they remained open through this past weekend. Staff was there yesterday for customers to pick up their laundry. There was a sign noting that the washers were out of service. (Someone had removed the doors to the washers.)

Meanwhile, EVG Facebook friend Edward Arrocha took these photos in late April. "They are devastated," he said of the staff. "I will miss them."

Word is the landlord is now asking $18,000 a month in rent. As previously reported, the owners of the Living Room on Ludlow Street were hoping to take over this space, though the CB3/SLA committee turned down that proposal in May.

Also, this marks the third East Village laundromat to close in the last few months. (East 10th Street and East 13rd Street.)

Gentle Wash Laundromat has a new owner, sign, on Avenue A (aka, today in laundromat news)

Gentle Wash Laundromat has new ownership now at 97 Avenue A near East Sixth Street ... the new owner retained the former staff ... workers put up the new sign on Saturday... EVG reader Creature noted that the inside was painted and all the Asian nicknacks were removed... (and expect wi-fi service soon.)

Can't personally speak much about the place. There are several one-star Yelp reviews ("Please don't go here unless you want to be treated like an insect and for your laundry to smell like poop") ... and one person referred to the owner as an (ugh) "evil dragon lady."

Regardless, says longtime patron Creature of the former owner: "All I know is she was always nice to me and will be missed. It feels like another institution leaving, but that may just be me."

While I liked the former sign...

... it's nice to see that another laundromat didn't close down for good around the neighborhood. (Like here ... here ... and some day here.)

'Retail space available' at former East 10th Street laundromat

The laundromat (Chow & Lam Corp.) at 204 E. 10th St. near Second Avenue closed last month — victim of a large rent increase.

A "retail space available" sign went up on Monday, as this photo by Blue Glass shows...

We waited to post to see if we could get the new asking rent. However, we have not heard what that rent will be just yet.

Mimi opened the Laundromat with her husband Peter, who passed away in May 2000. Her son Antony worked by her side during this time as well.

Free clothes up for grabs as East 10th Street laundromat closes

The laundromat (Chow & Lam Corp.) here at 204 E. 10th St. near Second Avenue has now apparently closed, victim of a large rent increase. EVG regular Steve Carter passed along these photos from today...

Mimi and her son Antony worked steadily here for many years. Mimi opened the Laundromat with her husband Peter, who passed away in May 2000.

1 of Sharon's laundromats has closed on East 13th Street

The laundromat near Third Avenue — right across the street from The Jeffersons — closed last week... (Didn't spot the listing online just yet...)

However, the owner does still have a second location down the block toward Second Avenue...

Perhaps laundromats are on the endangered list? One on East 10th Street is closing; one on East Second Street is likely becoming a bar.

An update on the laundromat closing on East 10th Street

Earlier in the week, a reader said that today marked the last day for the laundromat at 204 E. 10th St. near Second Avenue... (closing due to a large rent increase)...

This is not the case. Here is updated information from another reader:

"They have stopped accepting dry cleaning and hand pressed shirts. They will stop accepting laundry for service on Friday 3/22. They will not close until the following week. During those last days customers will be able to pick up as the Laundromat is cleared."

Laundry-bistro concept not washed up

During Monday night's CB3/SLA committee meeting, members did not approve of the venture for 44 E. First St. — The Wash House, the laundromat-bistro concept that we reported on here. (Per an EVG informant at the meeting, committee members were apparently turned off, in part, by the fact that the applicants didn't have a clear idea of how much of the business would be derived from alcohol sales.)

We reached out to the proprietors via email to see what the next steps were. They had already signed a lease for the space here between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

"We're considering taking the concept to another space and subleasing the current space to an all-night arcade or skateboard shop/cafe."

Longtime laundromat on East 10th Street closes on Friday

Back in January we heard that the laundromat on East 10th Street near Second Avenue that has served the neighborhood for so many years will be closing ... We heard that the landlord was asking for an "insane" rent hike.

A reader tells us that Friday is their last day in business. Mimi and her son are saying their goodbyes now to longtime customers.

"Such a nice family. It's really sad to see them go," said the reader.

As for this space, you can probably count on either more ramen... or an upscale eatery from a name chef. Right?

Rent hike KOs East 10th Street laundromat

Word is spreading on East 10th Street that the laundromat near Second Avenue that has served the neighborhood for so many years will be closing in the next few months.

Yep, the lease at this place where Mimi and her son have run is up and the rent is going up. Shocker. It will close in March, though we're not sure if that means at the beginning or the end of the month.

Anyway, who needs things like laundromats when we can have more noodle and dessert places to serve the students and people who don't live around here.

Laundry loyalties on Avenue B

The new Quick Coin laundromat is now open on Avenue B near Fourth Street... in the former Carne Vale space...

Meanwhile, a few doors to the south... the other, older laundromat is throwing a 20th anniversary special...

...and just a few doors to the north... another laundromat ... (which is, I think, just drop-off service now, right?)

A reader told me that he feels guilty about using the new laundromat, but it is better, he says.

After failing to land a bar/restaurant, 46 Avenue B becoming a laundromat

Wow. Shockers. According to the DOB, this space is becoming a laundromat with 28 washers.... Previously, the home of Carne Vale.... and the space has sat empty for several years... Perbacco was going to give it a whirl, though CB3 said no to that ... then Zerza back in April...CB3 squashed that too...

So, a laundromat... good news for the long-suffereing Avenue B residents who suffered sleepless nights thanks Le Souk and Carne Vale along this stretch....

Old laundromat becoming new laundromat

The long-dormant East Village Launderette on Avenue B near 10th Street is becoming another laundromat, or maybe a Launderette. A little competition again for Spin City.
