Report: NYC is now sterilizing rats

Every so often, at the right time, there seem to be more rats than humans around here. And, apparently, there's little to stop their fucking spawning.

Per this article in Bloomberg BusinessWeek, "rats are remarkably fertile, sometimes birthing 12 pups per litter and as many as seven litters in a year."

The article goes on to cover how city officials are planning on curbing the rat population in the subways.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority has kick-started a pilot program to sterilize female rats. To do this, it is teaming up with Flagstaff (Ariz.)-based SenesTech, a company that invented ContraPest, a product that, when consumed orally by rats, accelerates egg loss and can cause infertility in days.

But!

The article is quick to note that the end goal isn't to completely get rid of the rats. That may actually make things worse.

Said SenesTech CEO Loretta Mayer: "The overall goal is to diminish rat populations — but not wipe them out entirely because that would simply cause an influx of new rats."

What do you think of the idea? Could anything possibly go wrong?

Birds and rat squirrel fight over slice of pizza in Tompkins Square Park

So some birds were enjoying a slice today near Tompkins Square Park, as this photo from Bobby Williams shows...

Then! Lurking! A rat! Steals the slice...[Updated: Err, maybe it's a squirrel. Sorry. Still.]

Sort of slo-mo via the Grievestrator...

And guess what? The birds got it back...

Safety in numbers. And don't fuck with the Park's birds.

Tough day for critters in Tompkins Square Park

First, there was the squirrel who either wanted to play. Or just be a pain in the ass.

The squirrel had to make a quick getaway. The hawk was in no mood.

But a rat wasn't so fortunate.

And, for the rest of the afternoon, the critters kept a low-profile...

More rats my ass...

Rodent revelations: The Upper West Side has twice as many rats as we do

[Tompkins Square Park last fall, via Bobby Williams]

City stats released yesterday show that the Upper West Side (the 10024 and 10025 zip codes) have lodged more than 1,183 "rodent complaints" with 311 in the last two years, according to the Post.

As reported: "The UWS had nearly twice many reports as the Lower East Side and the East Village, which phoned-in 688 complaints in the same period."

Are we going to just sit here and take this from those wusses? Now get out there and leave even more half-eaten containers of food and slices of pizza on the sidewalks and in Tompkins Square Park!

On a serious note, Gothamist has a cool interactive map showing the number of complaints in the five boroughs by zip code. Find that here.

Same old rat story in Tompkins Square Park

Well, you've heard and seen this one before... this morning, while walking in Tompkins Square Park, I saw that someone had just plopped down about 10 pounds of bread chunks ... a few squirrels were nibbling on the feast...

... when the rats emerged from the nearby holes ...

Well, you can only really make out one rat in this photo...

And nearby...

A dangling rat in Tompkins Square Park

Today in Tompkins Square Park...

Bobby Williams caught the red-tailed hawk with lunch.

A big fat rat.

Which he flew off with to eat somewhere else.
