Here's your weekly update on what's happening to the former Cookout Grill space on First Avenue and 13th Street... the signs are now up...
Say hello to Kumo Sushi... and Kumo Sushi, say hello to the neighborhood...
and, well, they're replacing the Cookout Grill sign of course...
Then!
Now!
...but we're holding out hope that CG mascot will continue to watch over the 13th Street entrance...

New Japanese restaurant paying homage to former tenant?
As I've faithfully reported, the former Cookout Grill on First Avenue at 13th Street is becoming a Japanese restaurant. Extensive renovations continue...
And, so far, good news: It looks as if the new owners are honoring the memories of the former tenant... Too often, heartless new owners have no respect for the storied history of an address... neutering a space without regard of what it meant to the people...
...and, yes, I'm making fun of myself here...

Former Cookout Grill turning Japanese
Over on First Avenue and 13th Street, there's work galore being done at the former Cookout Grill, home of the worst restaurant mascot in restaurant mascot history...
Let us pause...
To the news! A worker says a Japanese restaurant is opening here...

The old Cookout Grill gets some wood
Well, now... the work is getting serious at the old Cookout Grill on First Avenue and 13th Street...
I'm still waiting to hear what's going in this space... the work permits says it will remain a restaurant, so that rules out a sorely needed bank branch... given the pricey corner real estate, I'd imagine nothing but a chain could move in here... I hope that I'm very wrong.

Action at the former Cookout Gill, where vandals beheaded their mascot
Next door to the new Tallgrass Burger ... something is going into the former Cookout Grill... We haven't heard what just yet. But from the looks of things, there's a way to go...
Hope they hurry, though: We just can't take the sight of beheaded restaurant mascots much longer... of course, this was the worst restaurant mascot in restaurant mascot history...

Another cartoon beheading in the East Village
Speaking of Eater, they also brought the news this week that Cookout Grill on First Avenue at 13th Street shut it down. I always loved their catchphrase: REAL BURNING WOOD.
On top of it all! (So to speak!) The truly odd Cookout Grill mascot was beheaded by vandals.
Point of discussion: Is there a serial beheader of animated characters in the neighborhood?
Flashback to December!
