'The Grand Canyon' lives on East 4th Street

[Last September]

Last year at this time, "the Grand Canyon of East Fourth Street" received some attention via NY1.

Residents have been complaining for years about the cracks and uneven sidewalk on East Fourth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C (on the north side, a little closer to C).

Said one resident: "Anybody could fall break their leg or something. It's terrible. That needs to be addressed."

Per NY1 last September:

According to the city's Department of Transportation, it's the property owner's responsibility to fix the sidewalk. It turns out that the sidewalk sits in front of a city housing authority building. After NY1 told that to DOT, inspectors went out to take a look at what needs to be fixed. DOT said it'll start the process to make that happen.

The DOT never actually specified when they would make that happen. A resident notes that the Grand Canyon lives... as these photos from this week show...

Step right up! Don't be shy!

There's a really steep fine for jumping on this sidewalk gate outside Bedlam

Spotted these stickers the other day in front of Bedlam at 40 Avenue C…

Not sure who enforces this fine… and gets to keep the money. And how are we expected to pay?

Laying the Jefferson's new sidewalk, which made it through St. Patrick's Day weekend

Over in the Northwest East Village on Saturday, workers were putting in the new sidewalk in front of the Jefferson at 211 E. 13th St. near Third Avenue …

Given that it was DrunkPeopleinGreenShirtsCon all-day Saturday night, we wondered if that freshly laid sidewalk would become the target of mischief.

But! On Sunday morning, it was still in pristine new sidewalk condition without anyone's initials or concrete penises …

Under the careful watch of security guard …

The Jefferson, the new 82-unit condo at the site of the former (sob) Mystery Lot in the North West East Village, is 100 percent in contract, The Real Deal reported last December.

One of these years someone may finally do something about 'the Grand Canyon of E. 4th St.'

Meant to mention this earlier... NY1 had this report last Wednesday ... about a big-ass crack in the sidewalk on East Fourth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C (on the north side, a little closer to C)...

Residents say that they've been tripping over "the Grand Canyon of East Fourth Street" for years.

"I think it's terrible," said one resident. "Anybody could fall break their leg or something. It's terrible. That needs to be addressed."

Calls to 311 have yielded zero results.

Per NY1:

According to the city's Department of Transportation, it's the property owner's responsibility to fix the sidewalk. It turns out that the sidewalk sits in front of a city housing authority building. After NY1 told that to DOT, inspectors went out to take a look at what needs to be fixed. DOT said it'll start the process to make that happen.

Place your bets on when something may finally happen. Dibs on 2018!

Hidden documents expose sidewalk troubles on First Avenue

While walking by 147 First Ave. the other day at Ninth Street., which may or may not be destroyed ... or turned into a motel.... I noticed some important-looking documents stuffed to the side of the front door... looked as if they'd been there for a few days. So. Naturally. I took a peek.

Well! Apparently the sidewalk along here needs some work.

So says the city, anyway...

Anyway, all sorts of letters and charts and stuff to say that the sidewalk needs to be fixed... or the owners (Midon Realty) will have to pay the city for doing it for them...which could be $10 or $13 a square foot....

New sidewalk cafe for Table 12

And in keeping with this 12th Street and Avenue A theme... on Feb. 9, the CB3/SLA approved a sidewalk cafe for Table 12 on the southeast corner. The sidewalk cafe must shut down at 10 p.m.... and they can set up again at 8 a.m. The majority of the 28 seats will be on 12th Street.

It was a balmy 44 last evening

...when we spotted two intrepid diners eating outside at Yuca Bar, Seventh Street and Avenue A...the diner with her back to the camera was wearing a hooded parka thingee.

Walking alongside the new Cooper Union building

Hey now. The sidewalks are open alongside the new Cooper Union building.

And I hope the security guard working at the CU is feeling better today.

Walking the plank at the Mermaid Inn

Shoot! Someone was on guard last evening to watch and protect the fresh patch of sidewalk against initial-engraving vandals. I was hoping to engrave "free the lobsters" and "lobster killers" into the sidewalk! (By the way, I have no idea whether they even serve lobster.) Or, at the very least, "EV Grieve11!!!11"
