City gets results from digging through the trash

Two weeks ago, we noted watching a sanitation department official sort through discarded mail in the trash can on the corner of Avenue C and 11th Street.

So, yeah the city can and will fine you $100 for throwing trash from your apartment into city-owned trash cans on the street.

EV Grieve reader thisboyshouts passed along this yesterday: "Someone in my building, a couple of doors down from that corner, got a ticket this morning for doing exactly that from the sanitation dept. It was tacked on to the front door of the building for all to see. The SD has the address, you think they could at least mail it..."

Yesterday morning, we spotted a city sanitation agent pulling up to the trash can on the corner of Avenue C and 11th Street. He put on a pair of latex gloves and carefully began to sift through its contents.

He paid particular attention to a bag (Lord & Taylor?) that someone had placed next to the can. He spent several minutes pulling out pieces of mail and inspecting them.

Eventually, he found some letters/bills with someone's name on them. He walked away with that mail.

Anyway, the city can and will fine you $100 for throwing trash from your apartment into city-owned trash cans on the street — like this one! Just ask the 83-year-old Upper East Side who was treated like crap for doing so. Plus, there is a warning right on the side of the can.

For $100, you could probably buy a top-of-the-line executive shredder.

Progress made in trash talk on East 12th Street

A group of residents on East 12th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue have had ongoing concerns about the trash piling up outside the buildings that house Ross Global Academy Charter School and East Side High School. With almost 800 kids, the school population between First and Avenue A is considerably larger than the three other schools on 12th Street and requires a greater number of trash pick-ups.

As one resident noted, the schools can dump on the sidewalk any time of the day or night while residents must comply with trash pick-up rules. "Every day we have to walk out of our building and look at bags of garbage and a running stream of sour chocolate milk in the gutter," one resident said. In addition, the fire hydrant on the south side of the street was often piled over with trash.








However, after a series of meetings with school officials, including the building engineer, as well as a flurry of e-mails and phone calls with Sanitation Department officials, there is progress to report. The residents are pleased to note a striking "culture change" in the past two weeks in the way that trash has been managed at the school facility.

In an e-mail, one neighbor noted "the initiative ... to establish an additional late Friday/early Saturday pick-up resulted in the elimination of a growing weekend trash heap which has caused tension between the school and the neighborhood. The constant, ever-heaping mountains of trash present not only an eyesore, but a a health hazard to the community, especially with bedbug outbreaks throughout the city."

On weekends, the sidewalks were trash free... and the fire hydrant has also been painted...



Said a resident: "This is a good start ... we will continue to monitor and review the situation and I look forward to continued collaboration and cooperation."

Seems to be a more active move in/move out end-of-month/beginning-of-month period than usual... seems as if more people are moving out than moving in... While walking around yesterday and today, I counted 17 abandoned mattresses... I started taking pictures of them... but you get the idea...







And none of them were marked "bedbugs."

As Down by the Hipster noted May 22, Le Souk had its liquor license reinstated ... before that, though, there was talk the longtime bane of lower Avenue B (as Eater aptly described it) was relocating to Bleecker and LaGuardia...

Meanwhile, Le Souk must be doing a little late spring cleaning. Which may explain why someone at Le Souk left a bunch of crap on the sidewalk last night... I call dibs on the empty keg!

Trashquake

Something called "Fashion Now! Youthquake" camped out on Avenue A between Seventh Street and Sixth Street today. There were two buses and a truck or two. Not much was going on the times that I passed by...



After the group left, though, the remnants from their catering ended up on the sidewalk and street.



Also, thanks to RatherBeBiking in the comments...As he noted: "Well, not only was the … ‘quake… responsible for a load of trash, their VIPs TLC hires blocked up the bike lane, one of them taking up part of the pedestrian crosswalk, bike box, AND bike lane on Avenue a for more than a few minutes."
