Where a grand elm stood

As reported yesterday, yesterday's high winds and heavy rain brought down one of the majestic American elm trees in Tompkins Square Park.

By early last evening, a crew was in the Park removing the tree from near the entrance on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.

Steven took these photos today. The winds uprooted the tree, which apparently had a weak root system (or so an onlooker surmised) ...
Tompkins Square Park still hosts a large assemblage of elms ... how many, don't know. Been awhile since this tree map was updated.

Tree down in Tompkins Square Park

The high winds today brought down a tree (updated: one of the grand American Elms) in Tompkins Square Park... EVG reader Eddie shared these photos, showing the fallen tree near the entrance on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place...
While this is the second large tree to fall during a storm this year ... workers did plant up to 20 new ones in the Park late last year.

A little off the top

Workers were back in Tompkins Square Park, where they removed more of the stump of the English Elm that came down at the entrance on Seventh Street and Avenue B on Aug. 3 during Tropical Storm Isaias ... (thanks to Steven for pointing this out!)

Not sure what the plans are for the rest of the stump...

... and if you want to try to figure out how old this majestic tree was...

EVG reader Bobby G. previously pointed out that this was an English Elm, not an American Elm as someone wrote, "and the only one in the park. Tons of Squirrels lived in it, and my guess is that it was one of the oldest trees in the park."

Stumped

Several readers have shared the new-look stump on First Avenue between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street... not sure at the moment who added the color to tree stump street artist Ian Dave Knife's work here...

Thanks to everyone who sent in photos... Steven was the first to spot it earlier in the week.

New trees for Tompkins Square Park

Workers are out in Tompkins Square Park this morning planting new trees (we heard 17 in total!) ... Goggla shared these photos...

... and a few more photos showing the incoming trees, courtesy of Vinny & O ...

That marshy pit near the center of the Park was also recipient of a tree... should keep Park vehicles for driving over the spot and leaving tire grooves in the mud...

200 new trees will grow in the East Village

We've received reader reports from around the neighborhood in recent days about city contractors digging up and replacing soil in tree pits.

EVG regular Daniel shared these top two photos from Thursday on 10th Street outside the Tompkins Square Library branch...

Word is nearly 200 trees will be planted in the East Village in the months ahead.

Among the locations receiving new trees — Seventh Street at Avenue A (thanks Paul W.!) ... shade for Joe Strummer...

... and Cooper Square near Seventh Street...

The city has an interactive map that shows you where the new trees will be... and when you can expect them on your block...

The above is just a screengrabs. Find the map at this link.

You can also find the city's current tree map right here.

Farewell to the leaning tree of 3rd Street

A dispatch from Third Street via Felton Davis, who reports that crews were on the scene here to remove the leaning tree on this block between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

Davis reports that the tree was dead — "most likely from last summer's extensive road work."

A morning look at the tree damage; 'the East Fifth St. Tree Committee is devastated'

Here's a Snowvember-morning-after look at some of the downed limbs and trees that remain on East Village streets... yesterday's wet, heavy snow proved too much for the trees that still had leaves intact...

12th Street west of Second Avenue (thanks Laura)...

Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue suffered considered limb losses... the East Fifth St. Tree Committee took stock of the damage...

In total on the block, four trees lost limbs. "The East Fifth St. Tree Committee is devastated," a committee member said via email.

Tree down on Clinton and Stanton

This is the scene this morning on Clinton Street just south of Stanton... EVG reader @artisanmatters shared these photos. Not sure what happened just yet (other than that it fell some time last night and remains blocking the street this a.m) ... and this Bud Light rig took one on the cab...

And two more views via EVG reader @Section215 ...

The East Fifth Street Tree Committee helps expedite removal of these downed branches

There are several reports of downed tree limbs in the neighborhood these past 18 hours or so with the rain and strong winds ... starting on Fifth Street near Cooper Square, where two large branches fell yesterday afternoon, landing near the Standard East Village.

Per the EVG inbox: "The East Fifth Street Tree Committee was on the job and contacted the Parks Department immediately." There weren't any injuries reported.

Meanwhile, there were reports of a small branch down at the entrance to Tompkins Square Park at Avenue A ... and a limb fell across Sixth Street near Avenue B.
