Violet times: An Earth Day look at the wisteria on Stuyvesant Street

Photos are coming in (thanks to Steven for the above shot) showing that the wisteria is coming in nicely this spring outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street.

Neighbor Harold Appel shared the shot below and noted: "I am happy to report that the wisteria is back on Stuyvesant Street. It seems that the dramatic pruning done last year actually reinvigorated the vine."
Also, the home remains for sale here.

1st sign this spring of the wisteria on Stuyvesant Street (and that townhouse is for sale!)

We're officially on wisteria watch this spring on Stuyvesant Street.

An EVG reader who shared these two photos yesterday noted that residents on the block were worried the plant had died, "but it's BACK."
The purple paradise of flowering beauty® resides outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street... and it inspires both Instagram users and jigsaw-puzzle makers.

And this fantastic home has been on the sales market since the fall — for the first time since 1958.

Here are details via Corcoran:
35 Stuyvesant Street is a jewel of a house that requires a complete restoration ... Five stories, not counting the English basement with 32' frontage (4 windows wide facing south) and a magical Wisteria Vine. There are 6 floors for the new owner to transform into a unique and lovely home. Please take note that an architect and skilled contractors will be necessary to restore this house to its previous splendor. ... This is a special opportunity to create a masterpiece.
Price: $4.2 million.

Lee B. Anderson, called the godfather of the Gothic revival in America, was the long-time owner. He died in 2010, and his caretaker has been living in the space.

Curbed has a great piece on the home from last fall right here.

Anderson won a 2003 Village Preservation Award for "nurturing his wisteria and making the Village a more beautiful place."

2023 wisteria watch

The 2023 wisteria watch is on here outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street... several readers have been sharing photos of the purple paradise of flowering beauty® ...
There were concerns going back to last spring, when the vines never came to a full bloom ... by the end of May, however, it was looking pretty lush. Then there was a major pruning session in October

A reader shared this thought on the jigsaw-puzzle-inspiring wisteria: "I know there were fears the plant wasn’t doing well but it has survived the winter and hopefully will soon thrive!"

Here are two more reader photos...

Pruning day for the great wisteria of Stuyvesant Street

Workers were out this morning to prune the wisteria ("purple paradise of flowering beauty") outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street.

We received several messages about the activity... (thanks to Harold Appel for the top photo and an anonymous reader for the one below)...
This is how the wisteria — previously captured in puzzle form — was looking later in the afternoon... (photos via Steven)....
A couple of residents who contacted us about the pruning thought it looked pretty severe... however, as we randomly read on the internet today: "Proper pruning can help you manage a wisteria and produce a truly spectacular flower show. At a minimum, pruning should be done twice a year..."

And as we learned back in the spring, wisteria hysteria has proven to be unfounded here.

A mid-summer look at the wisteria of Stuyvesant Street

Photo yesterday by Steven

The wisteria ("the purple paradise of flowering beauty") outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street is looking quite lush here as we enter August and the opening weekend for Brad Pitt's "Bullet Train" ... this after a slow start back in the spring, prompting concerns of root disease or something else not good. All appears well for now.

Parting spring thoughts on the wisteria of Stuyvesant Street

Photos by Steven

On May 11, we pointed out — with concern! — that the wisteria ("the purple paradise of flowering beauty") outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street never reached a full bloom this season. (See pic above.)

There were comments (and whispers!) that the wisteria was, perhaps, suffering from a root disease or some issue with the vines.

In any event, as this photo from yesterday shows, the wisteria is looking pretty lush as we move deeper into the spring... into the opening weekend for "Top Gun: Maverick."

Should we be concerned about the wisteria on Stuyvesant Street?

Top photo from May 2021

The wisteria outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street is a purple paradise of flowering beauty each spring — much to the delight of local Instagrammers (and others!).

Unfortunately, the vines never came to a full bloom this season...
We've heard that it doesn't look too healthy from a few wisteria watchers. Upon closer inspection, the left side at the base seems especially problematic...
Perhaps it can make a comeback in 2023 for wisteria season. In the meantime, you can always enjoy it in a jigsaw-puzzle form

Thanks to Steven for the bottom two photos.

Weekend wisteria watch

The NYC famous wisteria outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street is in bloom ... these photos are from yesterday here just west of Second Avenue ...
If you can't experience it in person this year, then there's always the jigsaw puzzle!

This photogenic East Village wisteria now has its own jigsaw puzzle

The wisteria outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street is a thing of beauty each spring... and now it's the backdrop — along with the homes that form Renwick Triangle — for a new (as of March 5) 500-piece jigsaw puzzle...
An EVG reader spotted this at the Barnes & Noble website ($14.99) ... the puzzle — titled 500 Blooming Streets — from Galison Books "features a beautifully illustrated floral NYC street" ... from art by Jay Joy Laforme.

The real-life wisteria — a favorite on Instagram – should be starting to bloom in a few more weeks.

Mapping the wisteria

[EVG photo from early May]

The wisteria outside 35 Stuyvesant St. at 10th Street is a thing of beauty each spring...

And there are plenty more to take in... local artist Pixie Yates created this wisteria map for the East and West Village...

Something to file away for when they are in bloom again next spring — or you can still admire the greenery and architecture at these addresses .... you may find more of Pixie's art on her Instagram.

In bloom

Jimmy Carbone shared these photos today... noting that the Wisteria vines are just starting to bloom here on Stuyvesant Street where it connects with 10th Street...
