With a rubble yell: Here's 51 Astor Place these days

Just a quick post to document what's left of 51 Astor Place... the former Cooper Union engineering building...

First, a great photo by Michael Sean Edwards...

Meanwhile...

...and spotted on the plywood surrounding the pit...

My heart goes out to the residents of the green glass monstrosity. Especially the ones facing the cube. They're going to be so inconvenienced by all that construction noise. Once those pile drivers get into action, their building will become part of an echo chamber.

"Rubble yell" -- very nice, ev!

the cranes in the third and fourth photos down bear an uncanny resemblance to vultures picking over carrion.

How sweet would it be if that were a park....

It would be a great place for a park, much needed in one of the most dense neighborhood in the city.

However, that land pays for full scholarships for all CU students.

Walked by there this afternoon, and was shocked. It just seemed so surreal. It even choked me up a little bit (No particular love for that building though). Same thing happened to me when I went into East Village Farms on Sunday.
So far i've been able to man-up over the speed and ferocity of the destruction / re-visualization of this neighborhood. But it's just becoming unrecognizable at such a rate; I'm left spinning.

I wish it would not be so tall and flashy.. it really is great empty like that.. astor place does need some more empty space. at least the building prior had a courtyard we could sort of 'look' at...
