We hadn't noticed. Sure enough. Late yesterday afternoon.
We called the restaurant. The line went dead after 10 or so rings.
There aren't any notes on the front door. But there is one sign of doomsday:

Perhaps this closure is temporary. (But wouldn't you leave a sign or something telling people that, say, due to a plumbing issue, the restaurant will be temporarily closed?)
Meantime, do you remember the last time that a franchise closed around here? Maybe the Dunkin' Donuts on Second Avenue?

We spoke to the sub-landlord of the space yesterday. He said the franchisee closed the store for “personal reasons” and “they’re looking for another franchisee.”
There used to be a subway on st marks near second ave. I think where Khyber Pass is. There also used to be a Dominos on 3rd ave b/t 7th and St. Marks. A little out of range, but there was a Burger King on 8th and Broadway. 9th and 3rd had a store24 when the NYU dorm opened up.

Ah yes, the Wacky Wok sign of doomsday. Since Halloween is approaching, THIS is the ultimate paper sign of doomsday. If you ever get a piece of paper from this gentleman, Karswell, (who gets his just desserts) do NOT let it get away from you and burn. From the classic horror film, the 1957 “Night of the Demon”:

I know, the "demon" is a rather pathetic FX creation but the movie itself is very atmospheric and spooky, give it a shot. And on Halloween Eve, I would love to drop off a couple cases of these demon notes at “The 13th Step” and “SideBAR”.
The Subway on Third Ave north of 15th was seized over back taxes a little while back. It re-opened not long afterwards. I'm not holding out hope until the signs are down and the space gutted.
One of the Starbucks in the Astor Place area closed as well as the Barnes & Noble there.

Ah! Forgot about that Starbucks/Cooper Union... that became the Film Academy Cafe... then the Death Star!
This Subway was never very busy. It's near the corner of 14th Street and First Avenue, and it's not a very appealing location for a restaurant--not even a Subway.

A pox on the landlord who only wants to rent to another franchise.
I'm looking forward to a replacement Blimpies.
Not surprising. Never anyone in it. Next to go will likely be the Subway at 1st Ave + 18th St. Never anyone in that one either.

I wish that a Burger King WOULD come back. The only chain I can stand. We have two EV McDonalds and I can't get it my way...:(
