The Subway (sandwich shop) closes on Avenue B

The owner of the Subway franchise on Avenue B between 13th Street and 14th Street has decided to close. A small store-for-rent sign is now in the front window. (Thanks to Gojira for the photo!)

This outpost opened in the summer of 2011.

This also marks the eighth Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past six-plus years, joining the one on the Bowery … East 14th Street … First Avenue … Second Avenue… Third Avenue ... Fourth Avenue ... and First Avenue between Sixth and Seventh.

The location at 250 E. Houston St. is all that remains in the East Village... though there are several nearby, like the one in the Avalon Chrystie Place.

What it costs to rent the former Subway (sandwich shop) on 1st Avenue

The Subway franchise at 108 First Ave. between Sixth Street and Seventh Street closed last month after six years in business.

The listing for the storefront arrived online this week. Pertinent rental details include:

900 square feet of basement space included - 20 feet of frontage - 10 foot ceilings • Busy East Village Avenue • Former Subway, in vanilla box condition • Easily vented through one story setback, gas in building • ADA entrance ramp and ADA bathroom • Grease trap, HVAC and plenty of electric are all there • Taxes almost non-existant • No Key Money - Direct Deal with the landlord

Asking monthly rent: $11,500.

The Loop Net listing also includes a photo from several years ago (2011?)... showing the previous tenant, Intervideo Electronics, that kinda weird and cool computer repair shop-plasma TV installers-DVD rental place, a sliver of the former neighboring restaurant Polonia, and a lot of snow...

The Subway (sandwich shop) on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street remains closed... this after the Marshal came calling late last week, putting the storefront in the legal possession of the landlord...



If this shutter remains permanent, then this marks the seventh Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past five-plus years, joining the one on the Bowery … East 14th Street … First Avenue … Second Avenue… Third Avenue ... and Fourth Avenue.

Subway fans still have the locations at 250 E. Houston St. and 223 Avenue B to choose from, among several others close by.

The Subway at 108 First Ave. opened in February 2012, taking over the space that previously housed Intervideo Electronics, that kinda weird and cool computer repair shop-plasma TV installers-DVD rental place...

There's a taker for the corner space on 4th Avenue and 12th Street that previously housed the Subway (sandwich shop) until late January.

Earlier this year, Gothamist noted that "New York City is in the midst of poke-sanity," with several newcomers ready to serve up the dish.

And just what is poke or poké (pronounced poh-kay)?

In the simplest terms, it's a raw fish salad, similar to a tartare or even ceviche, though poke is typically less acidic. Raw tuna, typically, is marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil then tossed with onions, jalapenos and wasabi, for example, though the combinations are myriad. Regardless of the protein source, another poke standout is the cubed shape of the meat, as the word comes from the Hawaiian for "to slice or cut."?

The signage includes a poke shot... though it really doesn't look so delicious in the morning sun...



Several other East Village restaurants serve up poke, such as Mother of Pearl on Avenue A and Noreetuh on First Avenue.

That's all for the Subway here on the northwest corner of Fourth Avenue and 12th Street. The space had been on the market this past month. (The asking rent is $20,000 a month, per the listing.) Workers started gutting the interior yesterday.

This now marks the sixth Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past three-plus years, joining the one on the Bowery … East 14th Street … First Avenue … Second Avenue… and Third Avenue.

Subway fans still have the locations at 250 E. Houston St., 223 Avenue B and 108 First Ave. to choose from, among several others close by.

The Subway location at 41 Third Ave. in the base of NYU's Alumni Hall between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street remains closed for now.

The sign on the door notes that they will be closed for a renovation, presumably…



The interior has been stripped clean.



If this is permanent (and it looks like it), then this will mark the fifth Subway sandwich shop to close in the East Village in the past three years, joining the one on the Bowery … East 14th Street … First Avenue … Second Avenue…

Anyway, workers gutted the Subway space at 342 Bowery between Bond Street and Great Jones yesterday.

The Subway opened here in late 2009, taking over the space after Downtown Music Gallery moved to Monroe Street.

This is the latest Subway to close in the neighborhood… joining the one on East 14th Street … First Avenue … Second Avenue…

Meanwhile, the Subway next to McDonald's on First Avenue recently came under new management …

Yep, signage is up at the former Subway on First Avenue between East 13th Street and East 14th Street for the smoke shop that we mentioned was on its way… bringing a little class to the joint…

The Subway closure on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue was fairly short-lived... signs went up last week showing that this location will soon be under new management...



And that's a lot of exclamation points.

In recent weeks, the for rent sign came down and contractors arrived at the former Ben & Jerry's on Third Avenue between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street. The ice cream shop closed after 22 years here back in September 2010, as Jeremiah Moss first reported.

The space has remained vacant since then.

We asked Richard Colligan, proprietor of Metroplis next door, if he knew who the incoming tenant was.

Yes he does — it will become a Subway.

So this will reverse the trend of Subways closing around here ... like the franchise on East 14th Street and the one on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street ...

Three East Village Subways have closed in the East Village now dating back to October... the one on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street... and the one on First Avenue near East 14th Street (though that one did later return under new management).

An EVG reader notes the recent arrival of a large banner hanging above the Subway on First Avenue near East Sixth Street... "there's a new sign, in addition to the perpetual 'Grand Opening' sign ... they are now 'Open Late' for all the drunks coming out of bars I guess," per the reader. (And this location hasn't always packed 'em in ... as seen here ... and here ... and here...)

We noticed the banner ourselves for the first time this past weekend. Hard to miss...
