Pizza for the former Subway (sandwich shop) on Avenue B

The former Subway (sandwich shop) at 223 Avenue B between 13th Street and 14th Street has a new tenant.

A worker helping renovate the storefront told EVG correspondent Stacie Joy that a pizzeria is coming soon here...
Not sure at the moment what kind of pizza we're talking about... more upscale pies and slices or the ubiquitous 99-cent $1.50 variety.

The Subway outpost was here for nearly nine years before going dark in 2020.

The Subway (sandwich shop) closes on Avenue B

The owner of the Subway franchise on Avenue B between 13th Street and 14th Street has decided to close. A small store-for-rent sign is now in the front window. (Thanks to Gojira for the photo!)

This outpost opened in the summer of 2011.

This also marks the eighth Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past six-plus years, joining the one on the BoweryEast 14th StreetFirst AvenueSecond AvenueThird Avenue ... Fourth Avenue ... and First Avenue between Sixth and Seventh.

The location at 250 E. Houston St. is all that remains in the East Village... though there are several nearby, like the one in the Avalon Chrystie Place.

The Subway (sandwich shop) isn't returning next to the McDonald's on 1st Avenue

Last week, we reported that the Subway (sandwich shop) on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street had closed... this after the Marshal seized the storefront on behalf of the landlord.

As we've seen in the past, a visit by the Marshal doesn't always mean the end for the business. However, as these photos show, workers have cleared out this 6-year-old Subway next to the McDonald's ... removing all but one of the Subway signs...

This marks the marks the seventh Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past five-plus years.

The Marshal takes possession of the Subway (sandwich shop) on 1st Avenue

[Subway photos by Steven]

The Subway (sandwich shop) on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street remains closed... this after the Marshal came calling late last week, putting the storefront in the legal possession of the landlord...

If this shutter remains permanent, then this marks the seventh Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past five-plus years, joining the one on the BoweryEast 14th StreetFirst AvenueSecond AvenueThird Avenue ... and Fourth Avenue.

Subway fans still have the locations at 250 E. Houston St. and 223 Avenue B to choose from, among several others close by.

The Subway at 108 First Ave. opened in February 2012, taking over the space that previously housed Intervideo Electronics, that kinda weird and cool computer repair shop-plasma TV installers-DVD rental place...

The 75-cent coffee at Subway

The other day, while walking by the Subway (sandwich shop) on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street, I noticed their homemade sign for 75-cent coffee...

I'm not sure how new the sign is. But it was new to me. At 75 cents, the coffee was as inexpensive as I've seen it around here. (Ray's sells his for $1; Ink on A offers it for $1.25. I'm sure there are other low prices, but they're not on my radar.)

And does this Subway really serve 75-cent coffee in heart-shaped mugs like on a sign? What does 75-cent coffee at a Subway taste like?

I went inside to find out. I was a little surprised to find five people in line. (It wasn't even prime power lunch time.) Had I noticed the line, I would have left to return another time. However, I was already inside the door. And the smell of the bread had already permeated every fiber of my clothing.

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to line up along the counter where the Subwayer was making sandwiches. So I just stood at the register. The worker glanced in my direction every so often, perhaps as a way to say that I was breaking Subway line protocol. And he was busy melting cheese on a Meatball Marinara 12 inch in the toaster.

Anyway, he eventually took my order. I asked for the coffee. He handed me an empty 12-ounce Subway cup for the coffee station ... as well as a container of half-and-half creamers. (Why not keep these by the coffee station? Theft problem?) He seemed a little harried and humorless to quiz about the lack of a heart-shaped mug like on the sign on the window.

[You owe me .75 cents]

As for the coffee, it was lukewarm and tasted stale.

The Subway (sandwich shop) has closed on 4th Avenue and East 12th Street

That's all for the Subway here on the northwest corner of Fourth Avenue and 12th Street. The space had been on the market this past month. (The asking rent is $20,000 a month, per the listing.) Workers started gutting the interior yesterday.

This now marks the sixth Subway sandwich shop to close in the immediate area in the past three-plus years, joining the one on the BoweryEast 14th StreetFirst AvenueSecond Avenue… and Third Avenue.

Subway fans still have the locations at 250 E. Houston St., 223 Avenue B and 108 First Ave. to choose from, among several others close by.

Looks as if the Subway (sandwich shop) on East 14th Street has closed

The Subway here on East 14th Street just west of Second Avenue hasn't been open in the past 10 days or so, reports EVG reader Pinch.

Subway has already removed this location from its store locator (don't worry — there are still plenty to choose from in this area…)

This location along IHOP Way has had problems in the past: The Marshall seized the place back in March 2013. However, it reopened under new management several months later.

Subway on 1st Avenue for rent

The one between East 13th Street and East 14th Street… Unfortunately, it appears the new management didn't work out.

This location also closed in October 2012.

Thanks to EVG reader Pinch for the photo…

Nearly 4 years later, sidewalk bridge removed from 338 Bowery

Wow. Something seems awfully strange walking on the west side of the Bowery between Bond and Great Jones... Sunlight! On the sidewalk! (Is that a song? — "Sunlight on the Sidewalk.")

The sidewalk bridge first arrived outside the Whitehouse at 338 Bowery in September 2009 for, according to permits, "emergency repairs." Nearly four years later, those emergency repairs must have finally been completed!

The sidewalk bridge even predates the Subway that opened in the former Downtown Music space next door ... the thing even prevented the Subwayers from finishing the paint job outside...

Perhaps it was the Subway manager who complained in December 2009 that he/she could not put up a business sign because of the sidewalk shed...

Not that the sidewalk bridge prevented Subway from advertising out front...

As for the Whitehouse Hotel, the hostel/flophouse combo that was barely hanging on and retaining some of the Bowery edge of yore, it appears safe... developer Sam Chang wanted to build a nine-story hotel on the carcass ... but those plans never materialized ... and the Whitehouse hung on, and after $100,000 of glammed up improvements and renovations, reopened as the Bowery's Whitehouse Hotel and Hostel of New York in January 2011.

And now they have their sidewalk and sunshine (and rain) back.

Look at Subway's big new sign on First Avenue

[Via an EVG reader]

An EVG reader notes the recent arrival of a large banner hanging above the Subway on First Avenue near East Sixth Street... "there's a new sign, in addition to the perpetual 'Grand Opening' sign ... they are now 'Open Late' for all the drunks coming out of bars I guess," per the reader. (And this location hasn't always packed 'em in ... as seen here ... and here ... and here...)

We noticed the banner ourselves for the first time this past weekend. Hard to miss...

This Subway opened last Feb. 8. And what are the term limits for a Grand Opening anyway?

Another East Village Subway closes

Multiple readers have pointed us to the Subway on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street, where workers removed the sign and gutted the sandwich shop today. This makes the second Subway to close in the East Village this past month. The Subway on First Avenue near East 13th Street shut down in October.

There's no stopping the Subway invasion

On Thursday, we counted up the number of Subway (sandwich shops) in the East Village ... (find the answer here...)

Last night, EV Grieve reader Chis F. passed along this shot of yet another Subway setting up shop that we hadn't noticed ... A little out of bounds, but close enough at Essex and Stanton...

More tenant meetings for White House residents; plus the bed bugs will be exterminated

Last week, Curbed noted the ongoing tenant meetings at the doomed White House (or Whitehouse) on the Bowery... The four-story building erected in 1916 now serves as a hostel as well as a permanent home for a handful of low-income residents... it's destined to become a hotel...

More meeting signs are up for the remaining tenants... and if the photos weren't so blurry, you'd be able to read that the meeting includes an update on preservation efforts ...

Plus, the tenants' attorney has gotten the landlord to OK exterminating for bed bugs. How humane of the landlord. They had to get an attorney to lobby for decent living conditions?

Meanwhile, I was thinking, what if this place shutters... and the sidewalk shed eventually is taken down... How will the Subway next door advertise?

Mysteries! Subway Highest Ranked Restaurant for the Seventh Straight Year

We get news releases!

Leading global market research firm Harris Interactive continues to examine the results of its 2010 EquiTrend® study, today focusing on the Top US Restaurant brands. The annual brand equity study measures over 1,000 brands across 42 categories, including a battery of US restaurant brands.

For the seventh straight year, Subway Restaurants ranks highest in brand equity in the quick service area, followed this year by Wendy's Restaurants. For the first time, the 2010 EquiTrend® study included casual dining establishments. Although Subway is not officially in the casual dining category, their brand equity ranking gives them the highest position among both quick service competitors and casual dining brands, which demonstrates the strength of their brand position in the restaurant industry.

"Subway ranking highest in almost every dimension we survey is very impressive," says Mary Bouchard, Vice President of Research for the Restaurant Industry. "Subway has maintained its brand equity by creating a strong consumer connection; they are very adept at reading and responding to shifts in consumer demand. When consumers wanted healthier choices, they promoted healthy options with the 6 grams of fat sandwich line; when we needed to save money, they set the standard for $5 meal promotions. It will be interesting to see how their new breakfast menu leverages their strengths."

No mention of their badass mascots, though.

Walking on 14th Street: Nordstrom setting a date; Baked by Melissa and Subway coming soon

Maybe I should walk on 14th Street near Union Square more often. Or not.

Noticed that a Baked By Melissa shop is coming to 14th Street just east of Fifth Avenue. She bakes tiny cupcakes.

You know that the Nordtrom Racked store is opening at the former Virgin Megastore location... Now a date has been set for the opening: May 11, 2010. (And will they actually make that date?)

And the city's 8,976th Subway is opening right along the Chipotle and Bravo Pizza in the Zeckendorf Towers on the northwest corner of Irving Place and 14th Street.

EV Grieve reader Nowooski pointed this out the other day...

It's Feb. 18, and we've already exceeded our quota for stories on Subway for 2009

First, sorry! Anyway, we're just admiring the original deals that Blimpie's and Subway have going right now...and, in my estimation, Subway had the deal first.

More important, though. Slum Goddess got a shot of the Subway Sub guy dude handing out fliers on St. Mark's to the new Second Avenue location. (It was part of her "Fancy Embarrassing Brunch" post yesterday.)

As Anonymous said in the comments Monday: "they had a man dressed in a cartoony sub costume handing out flyers. i almost took a pic of him but felt too sorry for the guy."
