Sorry about someone's dream getting crushed but Subway has the worst sandwiches, and I think sandwich savvy New Yorkers spend their lunch dollars elsewhere.
4 Dollar Foot Long. Think about it; you walk into a sandwich shop, you see 5 Dollar Foot Long sittin there, there's 4 Dollar Foot Long right beside it. Which one you gonna pick, man?
On a related: I was just thinking the other day; are we seeing a reduction in 7-11s and IHOPs? Seems like it. But maybe I'm just not getting out and around enough.
i tried a subway sandwich this year. it was probably the worst bread i ever had in life. foam doesn't come close to how bad it was. it was inedible. truly.
Not sure about a reduction… Aside from the 7-11 closing on St. Mark's … Anyway, I never see many people inside the IHOP on East 14th Street whenever I walk by … and their "sidewalk cafe" lasted about a week… Maybe it's mobbed at 4 am? Dunno! And they are paying $45,833 per month on a 10-year lease.
Can a Subway survive somewhere between foodie biscuits and $1 slice pizza? I think no. Landlords will be wondering soon if going for corporate chains was the best long term plan after all.
Time to start the EV Grieve Subway Deathwatches: Subway locations are closing down in almost every neighborhood, as are other sandwich shops like DeFontes on 3rd Ave and 21st St. Between all these Subway and dollar pizza places closing, pretty soon the only cheap meal in New York will be whatever you can catch with a fishing rod and a can of worms in the East River.
According to Yelp these Subways are all now listed as CLOSED:

A bunch of Subways have closed. One on 3rd Avenue between 20th & 21st and also one on Waverly Place at Mercer Street.
