Noted
Here's a late-afternoon look at the line for the annual (since 1979) Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... looks as if the line stretches back to Third Avenue? The West Side Highway?
The Ben and Jerry's opened here in January. Apparently this is their Grand Opening.
Thanks to Lola Sáenz for the photo!

Ben & Jerry's now hiring on St. Mark's Place
A hiring sign is now up at the incoming Ben & Jerry's at 24 St. Mark's Place (above left)... in case you are looking for a job or missed the news in late November that the brand was returning to the neighborhood with a retail outlet (or both)...

7 years later, a Ben & Jerry's is returning to the East Village
Back on Friday, we noted that the former Caffe Bene space was under renovation at 24 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
And yesterday, EVG contributor Derek Berg spotted the coming soon signage for the next tenant — Ben & Jerry's. (H/T to Bayou, who noted in the comments on last Friday's post that a Ben & Jerry's was coming to the block. The former DF Mavens space was also a contender.)
There was a Ben & Jerry's outpost at 41 Third Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street for 22 years before its closure in September 2010.
[41 3rd Ave. from 2011]
No word on the opening date just yet on St. Mark's Place.
Caffe Bene closed back in April after 17 months in business. Before Caffe B, the address was a Pinkberry.

Subway taking over from Ben & Jerry's on Third Avenue
In recent weeks, the for rent sign came down and contractors arrived at the former Ben & Jerry's on Third Avenue between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street. The ice cream shop closed after 22 years here back in September 2010, as Jeremiah Moss first reported.
The space has remained vacant since then.
We asked Richard Colligan, proprietor of Metroplis next door, if he knew who the incoming tenant was.
Yes he does — it will become a Subway.
So this will reverse the trend of Subways closing around here ... like the franchise on East 14th Street and the one on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street ...

Ben & Jerry's back in the East Village, for one night only
The Ben & Jerry's store closed on Third Avenue and NYU back in September 2010, as Jeremiah first noted... (And the space is still for lease...)
Anyway, EVG regular peter radley notes the arrival of a Ben & Jerry's truck on East Fifth Street at Second Avenue...
Turns out to be a one-night-only thing... Free Greek Yogurt, per @kikaeats ...

So what's going on with the former Ben & Jerry's space on Third Avenue?
The other day, we were walking by the former Ben & Jerry's space on Third Avenue and NYU (technically 41 Third Ave.) ... such seemingly prime space has been empty for some time. Jeremiah first reported that Ben & Jerry's was closing (after 22 years at this location) in September 2010.
So nearly 18 months later... what gives here? Astronomical rent? We looked at the Newmark Knight Frank listing. Pretty specific instructions in all caps for future tenants:
FANTASTIC RETAIL SPACE in NYU DORM.
ABSOLUTELY NO COOKING, NO TEA, NO COFFEE.
Formerly Ben and Jerry's.
Hot East Village Location.
The rent is "negotiable" for the 1,175 square feet.
The listing including this sad photo of abandoned cows...
What do you think? Cellphone store? Radio Shack? Egg shop?
