I'd love to grow some tomatoes and other produce so I've gone to every community garden and asked how to get a garden plot. Not a single one would outline a concrete process by which I could use a small patch. They loved telling me how I could volunteer or donate but that was all that was available.

Not so many gardens have individual plots. And Often there are waiting lists for current members who want one, who understandably get priority. All NYC Parks Dept community gardens are open to membership, always. But Plot availability depends on the individual garden. 1st step would be to find a garden you like, become a member, get on the plot waiting list, and make sure you're a member in good standing so
When a plot comes up you'll
Be eligible.

6B has individual plots, but there's a long list of people competing for them. Welcome to the city.
