Updated 9/2: The shop is back open.
There's a more formal sign on the storefront at 316 Bowery now... noting that the shop "is experiencing technical difficulties" ...
An EVG reader said he last noticed the shop open on Aug. 16.
Meanwhile, the J. Crew-Bowery Watch© continues.

Technical difficulties? Did they neglect to pay the Con Ed bill?
My heart continues to break.
They are working on a new J. Crew store on the southeast corner of Lafayette and Bond Street a short distance away. They will probably close this one and transfer everything to the new store location where they hope will have more pedestrians and customers.
This is what I don't understand. Why did they invest time, energy, and resources into this location after much fanfare along with delays, preparation and hiring/training staff only to close less than a year? Makes no sense. I commented on an earlier post about J Crew as a former employee. It takes them a year or two before they launch a new location anywhere. They study the demographics of the neighborhood and its inhabitants not to mention their socioeconomic status. A lot goes into it because they want that destination to succeed. And clearly, anyone who lives on or near Lafayette and Bond has infinite money to spare. Whomever thought the Bowery was a good idea to open a store needs their head examined.
This location gets tremendous foot traffic from the hotels all along the Bowery from Chinatown to Astor Place (at least when we had full hotels). While it would also draw from the pricey are west of the Bowery, a lot of retail was along the Bowery pre pandemic.
Screw J Crew, we need a Modell's.
