... I had just stepped off the street. Sounded like a bomb going off. FDNY has it roped off, and Con Ed will come and try to fit [the manhole cover] back into its frame. It didn't lift more than a few inches into the air, but it's still scary as hell!

Considering how heavy those lids are, this is indeed scary. I wonder what happened?
Wow not the right season for manholes to be blowing up, it happens usually in the winter time.

And they still haven't fixed the sinkhole on 3rd and 1st that occurred way back in mid July...
