A 38-year-old man is in custody this afternoon in connection with shootings in Tompkins Square Park on March 16 and March 22, police sources say.
According to the NYPD, the suspect, identified as Waldemar Alverio, was arrested on Delancey Street by officials at the 7th Precinct.
The shootings were said to be the result of an ongoing beef between Alverio and another man, sources said.
Following a scuffle in the Park on March 16, Alverio allegedly fired several shots, striking two innocent bystanders. (Neither victim suffered life-threatening wounds.)
This past Thursday, police said Alverio returned to the Park where he fired 5-7 times without striking anyone. One bullet penetrated a window above Niagara on Seventh Street at Avenue A.
No word yet on the charges against Alverio.
Since the shootings, the NYPD has added foot patrols to Tompkins Square Park.

So does anyone know who this Waldemar Alverio guy is? Was he a park local or known person?
There's a "Waldermar Alverio" of the same age who did a short bid for 2nd degree assault last year and another for 3rd degree attempted sale of contraband in 2015. Looks like he was picked up for some parole violation near the end of 2023 but then must've been released afterwards.
Thirty-eight years old and throwing shots in a crowded public place, twice. Disgusting.
Send the shooter a bill for his use of NYPD bandwidth. Really frustrating

How do you know he's out already ? "Probably" is not a fact.
Appreciate the reporting very much and trying not to be pedantic, but can we retire this kind of phrase or at least modify it? "Neither victim suffered life-threatening wounds."
It's good to know that no one was killed, but being shot is a wildly traumatic event in any instance. There is a kind of passive diminishment of the seriousness of shootings with this kind of language. When the bar for horror is someone died or is in grave condition, we inure ourselves to the trauma of guns in our culture. When getting winged or bullets flying around a crowded park that happen to miss more people than they hit is considered somehow a good or neutral outcome things are fucked.
"Non-life-threatening injuries" can affect victims for years or a lifetime. And just because the shooter had a "scuffle." Our mayor knows exactly the right words to say when police officers or civilians are shot, but can't he take some kind of action, such as organizing crime victims to rally in Albany against bail reform?
What does bail reform have to do with this? Do you not know that attempted murder is bail-eligible? Do you think that if you aren't arbitrarily detained pre-trial, you don't have to serve a sentence after you're convicted? Do you think this (alleged) dumb, trigger-happy MFer had any concern for consequences, anyway?
Send NYPD a bill for such incompetence in letting him get away from a broad daylight public shooting twice. Truly unbelievable!
