Flipped out in Stuy Town
A flipped vehicle was reported early this morning on the Stuyvesant Town service road at the top of Avenue B.
The Citizen app reported a person trapped inside. No other information was available.
Daniel Root, who took the photo above at 5 a.m., noted that it's pretty wild anyone could get that much speed on that narrow roadway to flip a car like that...
Automobile drivers have been a lot more reckless lately, compounded by the fact that the autos themselves are designed to be more powerful & handle better... even a person who is not in a terrible rush can feel more comfortable driving faster and faster. The problem is, the handling is fine at high speeds when driving in a straight line - until it isn't. In the past, you had a fender-bender. With high-speeds, you flip the car.
As crazy as this sounds, the only solution to this is not to have persistently straight and wide roads everywhere. Any sort of gentle curve or wave in the lanes will help calm drivers, and wide roads/wide lanes should be avoided because they encourage speeding. You could never pull all the crazy drivers or fast cars off the road, you just have to do it with design. It is one of the reasons why all those private communities with large single family homes have gently turning roads everywhere.
It's silly how the service drives are constructed. Taxis fly down them. They should have chicanes & angled parking. The crash rate would drop a lot.
The owner of this vehicle is owed more then $1000 in unpaid tickets, $350 is the minimum for impounding . The driver of this vehicle was caught speeding 6 times since September 2023, It has also a red light ticket from end of January. No surprises here
How in the world was this man's vehicle not impounded with his license revoked? Given everything 7:32 am stated and given what happened over the weekend, what happens now? This is menace like behavior. Very dangerous and uncalled for. He could have killed someone!
I still wonder how the heck the car overturned on the StuyTown service road which is narrow with cars parked on both sides. My guess is the driver was exiting the 14th Street Loop Road (its exit is at Ave B) at high speed & took a hard right at the service road.
