Workers this morning are cutting down one of the grand elm trees in Tompkins Square Park.
This one, located behind the under-renovation field house, was said to be dead for the past 18-plus months...
We're coming up on the 1-year-anniversary of the renovations.
The Parks Department website lists a September 2024 competition date for the $5.6-million project. The work is 61% complete, per the Parks website.

Dead? Looks like there are still leaves on the tree. The Dept of Parks tends to be overly aggressive about cutting down trees. They cut down a beautiful Callery Pear tree on East 5th Street full of leaves and gorgeous blossoms. We (E. 5th St Tree Committee) were told that it would not be cut down when one morning at 8 AM there they were chopping it to bits.
Carol, There are still leaves and not in just one place but all over the crown. Sorry about the pear tree on Fifth.
Sadly, this tree died over a year ago. It was Christo's favorite spot for eating and feeding his kids. There are a couple of other elms in the park that don't look so great either. And, the two cherry trees that flanked the General Slocum memorial fountain appear to be gone as well.
