Monday's parting shot

After 9/11 ceremonies today, members of FDNY's Engine Company 28, Ladder 11 on Second Street gathered at the recently opened Joey Bats Cafe around the corner on Avenue B.

They were joined by some FDNY members from other NYC station houses ... as well as some visiting firefighters, including from Oakland, Calif.

Six members of Engine Company 28, Ladder 11 died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. In total, 26 firefighters from the four East Village station houses died on 9/11; 343 total citywide that day.

Sunday's parting shot

Currently on the wall outside the Second Avenue F stop at Houston: A 9/11 tribute to firefighter Robert W. McPadden by Clown Soldier. (H/T William Klayer.)

Robert William McPadden‚ 30‚ firefighter‚ FDNY‚ Engine 23. McPadden was continuing his family's proud tradition of public service when he joined the FDNY. His father had served the department for almost 40 years‚ and his brother and sister are both police officers. While he waited for an opening in the FDNY‚ he earned a graduate degree in criminal justice and played a lot of Jeopardy. He and his wife had just bought a home in Pearl River so they could be closer to family and friends.

Thursday's parting shot

Thank you to EVG reader Michael Kramer for this photo from last night... in which crews were testing the annual Tribute in Light ahead of 9/11.

Assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south of the 9/11 Memorial, the twin beams reach up to four miles into the sky and are comprised of eighty-eight 7,000-watt xenon lightbulbs positioned into two 48-foot squares, echoing the shape and orientation of the Twin Towers. The installation can also be viewed from a 60-mile radius around lower Manhattan.

Preparing for 9/11 ceremonies outside Engine Company 5 on 14th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue this morning.

Twenty years ago today,  the Company lost Manny DelValle Jr., a 7-year FDNY veteran who grew up in the Bronx. He was 32. (Here's more about him from his obituary in The New York Times.)

According to previous reports, 26 firefighters from the neighborhood's four stations died on 9/11.

9/11 and beyond on the Bowery

Adrian Wilson (@planndalism) created this mural earlier in the week on the gate at 262 Bowery near Stanton Street.

He invited members of FDNY Ladder 20/Division 1 on Lafayette Street to add finishing touches to the mural. This Instagram post has more background.

Friday's parting shot

Thak you to Deb Kadetsky for this photo tonight...

Tompkins Square Library screening Luigi Cazzaniga's '9/11: What I Saw'

The Tompkins Square Library is screening Luigi Cazzaniga's documentary "9/11: What I Saw" tomorrow afternoon at the branch on 10th Street.

Here's more about the premiere of this film via the library's invite:
A documentary masterpiece featuring rare footage shot on the morning of 9/11 by Italian artist Luigi Cazzaniga... While some of Cazzaniga’s now-historic footage of 9/11 has been shown on CNN, HBO, RAI, and other television networks around the world as well as the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan, Cazzaniga had never edited it into a film of his own. Until now.

It was during the pandemic when Cazzaniga, a longtime correspondent for Italian television, was able to sit down with this heartbreaking footage and reckon with what he saw that day. With editorial help from Hernan Valle and producers Ilka Scobie and Exquisite Pandemic editor Rick Whitaker, Cazzaniga was able to actualize his vision for this nearly hour-long film in time for the 20th anniversary of that tragic event with so many global consequences.
The in-person screening takes place tomorrow afternoon at 3. You can register to attend at this link. Masks are required at the branch, 331 E. 10th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

A 9/11 moment at Engine Company 5

Local firehouses throughout the city commemorated 9/11 today. James and Karla Murray shared this photo from this morning outside Engine Company 5 on 14th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue during a moment of silence.

On Sept. 11, 2001, the Company lost Manny DelValle Jr., a 7-year FDNY veteran who grew up in the Bronx. He was 32.

As the Murrays wrote:

Manny had just finished an overnight at Engine 5 ... when the call came in around 8:47 am.. that a plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Engine Company 5 was assigned to team up with another company to walk up 80 floors and stretch the hose line. Manny Delvalle Jr. was carrying the rollup lines of hose and an oxygen tank. The last time Manny was seen, he had stopped on the 10th floor to give a woman oxygen. His unit had made it to the 15th floor when they were called back when the building began to rumble. They looked for Manny but could not find him and after the North Tower fell at 10:28 a.m., he was reported missing.

Here's more about him from his obituary in The New York Times:

At home in the Bronx, Mr. DelValle took advanced classes in salsa dancing. He loved Latin music but listened to everything. "Rap," said his brother Pete Moyer. "And R&B," added his sister Grace Nolly. "Old school," said his father, Manuel Del Valle, to be specific.

Mr. DelValle, who graduated from the University of Maryland, was also an accomplished moguls skier and roller skater, a traveler, a lover of war movies and, his family says, a lady's man. He also got Engine Company No. 5, where he was assigned, to participate in the Puerto Rican Day Parade. He was the one in the family who always sent a card and gift to siblings, half-siblings and cousins.

According to previous reports, 26 firefighters from the neighborhood's four stations died on 9/11.

[Video] Nighttime along Avenue A on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12, 2001

Harold Kramer shared this video that he filmed on the evening of Sept. 11, 2001. Kramer, who owned the Raven Cafe on Avenue A and 12th Street, starts the clip by talking about the events of the day.

At around the 1:45 mark, he shows the Twin Towers mural that Chico quickly put up on the southwest corner of 14th Street at Avenue A. Kramer spent the bulk of the video with people at the mural the following evening.

As one New York Times reader said of the work: "It filled me with hope and sadness and some kind of love for all of the other New Yorkers living through the hours and days yet to come."

The landlord of the building eventually covered the mural with ads. The mural briefly reappeared in November 2013.

New 9/11 mural underway on 9th Street

As noted here last week, artist (and musician) David Ouimet was creating a new 9/11 mural — incorporating part of the original — starting today here on Ninth Street at Avenue A.

The original 9/11 mural here was in bad shape. (Nigel, an owner of Gelarto, the corner business, had asked for feedback about the mural.) Ouimet saved what he could from that work.

He started earlier this morning... and will be joined by his kids at some point today...

Jesse Fischler, who co-owned the former Shrine Records on Ninth Street, created the original mural.

Updated 9/11

The mural will be finished this evening...

Updated 5 p.m.

Before the mural was completed (and while Ouimet was away) building management installed new trash bins, bolting them into the sidewalk in front of the work...

When apprised of the situation, landlord Icon Realty gave Gelarto the OK to incorporate the trash bins into the final work... so now the artist will figure out how to make this work ...

A new (and refurbished) 9/11 mural for 9th Street and Avenue A

As you likely noticed, the 9/11 mural on the Ninth Street side of 145 Avenue A is in pretty bad shape.

The proprietors of the new gelato shop that opened here earlier this summer reached out to ask for input on what to do with the wall space. Refurbish the mural or paint it over.

Looks as if there will be a combination of those choices.

Yesterday, artist (and musician) David Ouimet started prepping the wall for a new 9/11 mural — incorporating part of the original — that he will paint on Sunday, 9/10.

Lola Sáenz shared these two photos from today... she said that he is not getting paid for the mural, and has permission from the Gelarto folks to rework it...

The 9/11 mural on 9th and A

The mural of the World Trade Center went up in the days after 9/11 here on Ninth Street at Avenue A.

I never knew who the artist was ... As I learned today, it is the work of Jesse Fischler, who co-owned the former Shrine Records on Ninth Street. (Thank you @thismikewolf)

It has, for the most part, remained untouched through the years — even with a new landlord and the departure of the existing businesses here. (The building was painted in late 2014.)

Other 9/11 murals in the neighborhood haven't fared so well. Chico's Twin Towers tribute on Avenue A at 14th Street was covered by ads then painted over. Back in 2003, Cooper Union had the "Forever Tall" mural painted over at 35 Cooper Square to make way for ads. (The whole building was eventually demolished anyway.)

And back in May, someone tagged/vandalized this mural on Second Street just east of Avenue B...
