Ramen and dim sum for 9th Street
It was signage day yesterday over at 350 E. Ninth St. just west of First Avenue... where workers made the new restaurant official — a ramen-dim sum shop... not sure at the moment what the exact name is... O Ramen Dim Sum M?
The previous tenant, beQu Juice, closed here last November after nearly six years in business. Until 2012, 9th St. Bakery had been in this storefront since 1926.
Thanks to Steven for the photos!

Replacement for 87-year-old 9th St. Bakery revealed
[May 2012]
The 9th Street Bakery closed back in June, as we first reported. Owners Oleg and Tetyana Kucherenko said that they couldn't afford the 38 percent rent hike that the landlord requested with a new lease.
At that time we heard that a juice/smoothie place was taking over the space. Sure enough, here ya go. We spotted the workers putting up the signage last evening...
It's a beQu — for Beyond Quality. The company sells it juices at various health-food stores and what not. Apparently there was a storefront in Cobble Hill that is now closed.
Pretty tough competition for this kind of product right around here — there are two locations of Juice Press close by on East 10th Street ... not to mention Liquiteria on Second Avenue and East 10th Street ... and Organic Avenue on Third Avenue and East Ninth Street... and Commodities on First Avenue near East 10th Street...
In any event, we wouldn't mind one of these from the Bakery right about now...

New look revealed for the former 9th Street Bakery space
[The 9th Street Bakery in 1960, courtesy of Mort Zachter via the Voice]
The gut renovation of the former 9th Street Bakery is apparently winding down... today, workers removed the plywood to show off the new exterior that will purportedly house a juice-smoothie shop...

A big rent hike KO'd the 9th St. Bakery, which closed June 9 after 87 years in business.

Gut renovation at the former 9th St. Bakery
Renovations are underway at the former 9th St. Bakery, which closed June 9 after 87 years in business. Workers have removed the awning and gutted the interior. No official word on what's taking the space. Bakery owner Oleg Kucherenko had said that a juice/smoothie place was going to be the next tenant.

[Updated] 9th Street Bakery closes for good on Sunday
As you probably know, 9th Street Bakery is closing. Owners Oleg and Tetyana Kucherenko have said that they can't afford the 38 percent rent hike that the landlord is requesting with a new lease. They've been on a month-to-month rent arrangement until the landlord found a new tenant.
Word came down on May 15 that the couple needed to be out in the next few weeks.
And now: Sunday is their last day.
A bakery has stood here the past 87 years. Word is that a juice/smoothie shop will take over the space here just west of First Avenue.
Updated 3:13 p.m.
Marc Yearsley at Gothamist spoke to Oleg today.
"[It's got] nothing to do about rent, it's about business. It can't be generalized because the neighborhood in this spot really changed. Changed so much," he explained. "I have maybe 5% of my customers left. I was fighting until the end, but it was already bad a year ago."

Sad sale of the 9th Street Bakery continues
As you probably know, 9th Street Bakery is closing in the next few weeks. And owners Oleg and Tetyana are selling off pieces of the bakery, including the dry-curved glass showcases.
Even more of the bakery's accessories are now on Craigslist... this one is a gut wrencher — the sale of the wood-framed chalkboard noting the daily specials...
A juice/smoothie shop is apparently taking over the space.

9th Street Bakery now selling its glass showcases
Yesterday, we reported the sad news that 9th Street Bakery will have to close in the next three weeks after their landlord ended the lease. And now owners Oleg and Tetyana are selling off pieces of the bakery. An ad appeared on Craigslist yesterday for the bakery's two dry-curved glass showcases.
A bakery has been at this location for 87 years. A juice/smoothie shop is apparently taking over the space.

The end is here for 9th St. Bakery
As you may know, 9th St. Bakery has been on a month-to-month lease, with hopes of lasting through the summer in the face of a big rent hike.
Unfortunately, Oleg, who has owned the bakery with his wife Tetyana since the 1990s, told EVG contributor Derek Berg yesterday that the landlord has ended the lease. The bakery must be out by early June.
A bakery has stood here the past 87 years.
And what will be taking the bakery's space? Some kind of smoothie/juice shop.
Perhaps Oleg will, in fact, start that delivery service.

9th Street Bakery: still on a month-to-month lease, and serving giant treats
Back in January, we first reported that 9th St. Bakery, which has been around since 1926, will have to close due to a rent hike ... as well as a downturn in business.
However, the longtime bakery is still holding on with a month-to-month lease. Oleg, who has owned the bakery with his wife Tetyana since the 1990s, remains hopeful of staying open through the summer.
The other day, Oleg told EVG contributor Derek Berg that they are still waiting to hear from the landlord about a rent increase.
Meanwhile, they still continue to sell giant treats...
Oleg says that he plans to start a delivery service in the event that they close. There will be a minimum order of $7. Hopefully it will never have to come to that.

On a month-to-month lease, 9th Street Bakery hopes to last through the summer
Back in January, we first reported that 9th St. Bakery, which has been around since 1926, will have to close due to a huge rent hike ... and a downturn in business.
EVG reader Dave M. from 13th St. originally told us the sad news. He provided an update from Oleg, who has owned the bakery with his wife Tetyana since the 1990s.
The bakery is currently on a month-to-month lease with the landlord, who will give them 30-days notice when he needs to terminate. It is not known whether the landlord is actively seeking a new tenant at this time. So Oleg thinks there is a good bet that the bakery may last the summer into the fall.
Good news for now, anyway.

Reader report: 9th St. Bakery is closing after 87 years
[May 2012]
Ugh. EVG reader Dave M. from 13th St. passes along this sad bit of news today: 9th St. Bakery, which has been around since 1926, will have to close. Oleg, who has owned the bakery with his wife Tetyana since the 1990s, said that the landlord is doubling his current rent. This, along with a barely-break-even summer, is forcing them to close.
[Via Manhattan Sideways]
There's not timetable yet for the closure — mostly likely in the next 2-4 months.
Per the bakery's website:
Per Dave: "No more cheap, good pastries and bread. Such a shame."
And a tough time for the older bakeries. Aside from 9th St., Something Sweet on First Avenue and East 11th Street remains closed from last summer ... and Whole Earth Bakery on St. Mark's Place shuttered at the end of December.

Per the bakery's website:
Max and Lena Wolkirmerski emigrated to the United States in 1913 from Zetel Belarus. They opened up a bakery on the corner of Allen and Stanton. Their children Joe, Harry and Helen moved the bakery to 9th and first ave where it still remains today.
