9th Street Bakery: still on a month-to-month lease, and serving giant treats

Back in January, we first reported that 9th St. Bakery, which has been around since 1926, will have to close due to a rent hike ... as well as a downturn in business.

However, the longtime bakery is still holding on with a month-to-month lease. Oleg, who has owned the bakery with his wife Tetyana since the 1990s, remains hopeful of staying open through the summer.

The other day, Oleg told EVG contributor Derek Berg that they are still waiting to hear from the landlord about a rent increase.

Meanwhile, they still continue to sell giant treats...

Oleg says that he plans to start a delivery service in the event that they close. There will be a minimum order of $7. Hopefully it will never have to come to that.

Those poppyseed danish are fantastic.

They should move into the space vacated by Something Sweet, since it doesn't look like Kathy's appeals for help re-opening have borne any fruit, sorry to say.

Another great bakery! Hope it stays put... would miss their rye and challah rolls the most!

What are the hours of the bakery?

The pastries here remind me of the ones my mother baked. Delicious but each one unique in form. The only consistant detail, their humongousness. My suggestion is coffee from the Bean, if you're a "Beaner" and then cross 9th St for your treat. Btw the Bakery coffee is perhaps not designer but it's certainly good and cheaper than Bean's.

They should cut a deal with The Bean whereby The Bean sells 9th Street Bakery goods along with their other stuff. Win - win....

[Kudos to Marc Kehoe -- a dollar is a vote. WE decide who stays in business by where we spend our money!!]

They have a chance in that location only because their space is too small for a chain store. Otherwise they'd be long gone. As of last year the EV had the second most chain stores of all NYC neighborhoods by a slim margin. Does anyone doubt that the EV now has the most? For those of us who've been here a while, it's hard to grasp what this neighborhood is today. The most chain stores in NYC and the highest concentration of bars in the nation. The bar owners used to threaten us that if we didn't accept a new bar it'd be a chain store. Now we've got both.

Who wants to go in with me on a chain of bars called Bar Chain? Seriously, this bakery outlet doesn't actually bake on their site..they're made in the outer boro- right?- I love the sesame twists.....

Oleg told me yesterday that June 9 is their last day and the new tenant will be a juice bar. Right, just what the neighborhood needs. Because there are way too many great bakeries and far too few juice bars. I give it six months, and I won't set one delicately painted pinky toe in there.

Right, HippieChick, exactly what the neighborhood needs. We saw the same shit going on the corner of 10th St and Stuyvesant Place, where the fantastic shoemaker Angelo Fontana had to move out for a Fro-Yo place - which already closed. Thank you very much!
