Blank slate at the Bowery Mural Wall

Banksy's time on the Bowery Mural Wall has apparently come to an end ... the wall has been painted over.

In March, Banksy used the space as a protest over the incarceration of Turkish-Kurdish painter and journalist Zehra Doğan.

No word at the moment about who might be next to showcase his or her work here at East Houston.

Noted

Someone tagged Banksy's two-day-old work on the Bowery Mural Wall overnight...

A worker scrubbing the graffiti off the #KindComments mural back in January said that the wall was getting tagged on a daily basis.

At Banksy's Bowery Mural Wall this morning

A NY1 crew was on East Houston and the Bowery early this morning for a segment on Banksy's new mural, a protest over the incarceration of Turkish-Kurdish painter and journalist Zehra Doğan. The black hash marks on the wall apparently represent the number of days that Doğan has spent in prison...

Meanwhile, someone added his or her own message... about the March for Our Lives rally on March 24 ...

The person who added this message sent an email, saying there are issues closer to home that need attention. "I did it because it's such a big wall, and there's room for an American statement."

Banksy's message to 'Free Zehra Doğan' at the Bowery Mural Wall

As mentioned yesterday, the Bowery Mural Wall had been painted over in preparation for the next installation here at East Houston ... that apparently happened late last night and early this morning (top photo from around 7:15) ... and later... EVG regular Lola Sāenz shared these photos...

The message via Banksy reads "Free Zehra Doğan" ...

Here's artnet News with more about Doğan:

The Turkish-Kurdish painter and journalist Zehra Doğan has been sentenced to two years, nine months, and 22 days in prison for creating a painting which depicted the destruction caused by Turkish security forces in the Nusaybin district of Mardin province, a Kurdish region in Turkey.

Banksy also added a rat to the clock of a former bank of 14th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Man sues city over false Banksy arrest in the East Village

Last summer, police arrested Brooklyn resident Robert Pfeiffer as he stood outside Third Rail Coffee on East 10th Street near Stuyvesant Street admiring a piece of street art that may have been a Banksy.

Cops reportedly thought Pfeiffer was responsible for the smiley face and made the arrest.

Now, as the Daily News reports, he is suing the city and six police officers for wrongful arrest.

Ilissa Brownstein, Pfieffer's lawyer, said her client is a trained artist “who is interested in many forms of art including street art,” and he’d recognized the smiley face on the left side of the storefront as an iconic Banksy.

Pfieffer, 33, is a self-employed packing engineer for the advertising world who got his bachelor degree from the School for Color and Design in Munich.

“He said 'If I just did this, it would smudge, but it doesn't,'” she said. The officers arrested him anyway, keeping him in custody overnight. After two trips back to court, prosecutors dropped the charges in October.

According to the suit, Pfeiffer says he lost seven days of work at $45 an hour and has to take Ambien and Trazodone to sleep. He's suing for unspecified damages, per the Post.

A spokesperson told reporters that the city is reviewing the case.

[Updated] Billy Leroy's Banksy

Just about two weeks since Banksy dropped his Grim Reaper Bumper Car on the former Billy's Antiques on East Houston ... Billy Leroy reports the following discovery earlier today at The ANNEX flea market on West 25th Street...

"The guy I bought it from found it late Friday night on East 4th Street and 2nd Avenue on the sidewalk. He is a professional dumpster diver and every week he puts out all his finds at the flea market ... needless to say he sold it to me for a very low price...it's just such a coincidence that after all the bad mouthing I did on Banksy last week and here I am tooling around the flea market and, voilà, a Banksy appears ... Crazy."

Banksy's Nazi-doctored landscape raises big bucks for Housing Works

As you may have seen, Banksy donated a thrift-store-style painting to the Housing Works store on East 23rd Street ... it was a painting that he apparently purchased earlier for $50. But he added the Nazi solider sitting on the bench ... and titled it "The banality of the banality of evil" (an homage to the writer/philosopher Hannah Arendt).

For their part, Housing Works, which has operated scatter-site housing, harm reduction services and a supportive residence and primary care clinic for homeless NYers with HIV/AIDS since 1991, put the work up for auction.

The auction ended last night. The winning bid? $615,000.

"100 percent of the proceeds will go to provide housing, health care and other life saving services to homeless NYers living with HIV/AIDS," East Village resident Andrew Coamey, senior vice president for Housing Development and Chief Financial Officer at Housing Works, told me.

Meanwhile, Banksy Month in NYC is over. The Vulture ranks all his work during his street residency.

Banksy's grim reaper and the old Bowery ghosts

As you may have heard or seen, Bansky's latest street installation is on East Houston and Elizabeth ... at the site of Billy Leroy's former big tent.

The above video of the Grim Reaper Bumper Car comes from the official Banksy site, which includes an audio guide. (Banksy labeled this Bowery on his site.)

Catch it while you can, I mean, if you want to. Tonight through Sunday, dusk until midnight, apparently.

Find more photos, and what not, at Gothamist... BoweryBoogie ... and AnimalNY, who posted this video...

We reached out to Billy Leroy for comment... he is currently in Los Angeles... enjoying the start of the third season of "Baggage Battles" on the Travel Channel.

He said he was unaware that Banksy would be using his former Billy's Antiques spot for this installment.

"I support art and I like Banksy's work," Leroy said via email. "A year and a half ago we did the whole Death thing and buried the old Bowery with music. It's a compliment that a world-class artist would do a similar idea. The ghosts of the old Bowery told me they are still happy,
but will never allow anything to be built on that spot."

Ronald McDonald and Banksy visit the Lower East Side

So this happened late this afternoon outside the McDonald's at Delancey and Essex... EVG Facebook friend Edward Arrocha shared these photos of Banksy's "All City – McDonalds" traveling sculpture show ... featuring a fiberglass statue of Ronald McDonald getting his clown shoes shined by "a real live boy," per the British artist's website.

The audio guide (Animal NY has it here) from Banksy's website says that this can be read as "a critique of the heavy labor required to sustain the polished image of a mega-corporation."

The Lo-Down reports that five police cars responded to the scene... though, with the crowd apparently on Banksy's side, the NYPD allowed the shoe shine to continue through to its conclusion...

...and there were rumors that the fellow carrying Ronnie off into the night was Banksy himself...

Banksy's 'Concrete Confessional' has been removed from E. 7th St.

Banksy's "Concrete Confessional" was discovered/unveiled last Saturday... it was naturally quickly defaced/augmented, etc. ...

On Wednesday, construction workers apparently attempted to prevent future vandalism/augmentation by putting plexiglass over the art...

And now, sometime yesterday, someone removed the entire hunk of concrete (intended for use in the Cooper Square-Astor Place revamp), as these photos by EVG reader Robert Miner show...

Perhaps the Confessional was carted away to an unspecified gallery like that car on Ludlow Street was...

Meanwhile, how are you feeling about the Banksy hype these days?

A First Avenue Bansky branch?

EVG reader Thom spotted this on First Avenue and East Fourth Street last evening ... The sign reads "Laugh Now But One Day I’ll Be So Rich That I Can Do Graffiti Wherever I Want." And sponsored by Banksy of America. And the Banksy jab comes courtesy of TrustoCorp ... there's another sign in Williamsburg that reads "Bad Artists Imitate Great Artists Get Really Really Rich."

Animal NY has the scoop about all this here.

Bharucha and Banksy

Here's more about the additions from the weekend to the Banksy installation on East Seventh Street and Cooper Square ... via the EVG inbox...

Free Cooper Union is pleased to present the repentance of Jamshed Bharucha.

“Cooper Confessional” depicts Cooper Union’s overpaid and visionless President, Jamshed Bharucha, as he confesses his transgression from a historically merit-based full scholarship model, to an expansionist tuition agenda. Hearing Bharucha’s lament is Peter Cooper, who founded the Cooper Union in 1859 and established the mission of the institution as necessarily providing free education to all admitted students while educating against the evils of debt.

This collaborative work is flanked by an image of the infamous Jamshed the Giant, who insists that must students PAY for years of financial mismanagement and administrative bloat at the Cooper Union, along with the title of the Free Cooper Union Player’s latest drama, Free Cooper: The Musical, which is the sequel to the group's debut hit The Politics of Destruction.

As Banksy notes, “there's nothing more dangerous than someone who wants to make the world a better place,” and with that in mind, and with many more plans for direct action, we continue to fight against tuition at Cooper Union and the rising tide of student debt.

Someone apparently took a car door off the Banksy mobile on Ludlow Street

This Banksy mobile showed up on Ludlow Street on Wednesday... part of the artist's month-long NYC street residency... as perhaps expected... someone took a piece of the installation (the back door on the driver's side) ... as this photo via Justin McWilliams of the East Village shows...

Banksy's piece on East Seventh Street was quickly altered ...and his some of his other work has been defaced as well this month...

Updated: Someone already defaced Banksy's East Village street installation

[peter radley]

Banksy unveiled his latest NYC street installation yesterday on East Seventh Street and Cooper Square... And as this photo by @svvalera shows, someone has already defaced his "Concrete Confessional."

This marks the third of his pieces to be defaced during his month-long residency in NYC.

Updated 12:24

More about this via Angus Johnston at Student Activism:

Sometime last night or this morning, the priest in the painting was given a bushy white spray-paint beard which rendered him a dead ringer for Peter Cooper, the founder of the Cooper Union. At the same time, the cross that adorned his neck was replaced with a giant Flavor Flav style clock with a red face and hands set just prior to midnight, the symbol of the Free Cooper Union activist movement.

And there's apparently another confessional showing someone who looks like Cooper Union President Jamshed Baruscha... with a Free Cooper Union tag...

Banksy's mobile garden draws a crowd on St. Mark's Place

Banksy's NYC tour continued this evening with his mobile garden making an appearance on St. Mark's Place between Third Avenue and Second Avenue... EVG regular jdx happened by ... the truck was hereabouts for roughly an hour, rambling on around 9 p.m., per jdx ...

Mr. Brainwash gives Shepard Fairey some love

But first... As I pointed out on Saturday, Shepard Fairey's Bowery-Houston mural got hit pretty hard ...

Now, it looks as if someone is making some progress cleaning off the mural...

...while Banksy Mr. Brainwash checks in next door....
