The EVG podcast: Al Diaz on BOMB1, SAMO© and Basquiat

Artist Al Diaz joined me in the East Village Radio storefront studio on First Avenue for this EVG podcast.

Diaz grew up in the Jacob Riis Houses on Avenue D. He started writing graffiti at age 12. As a teen in the late 1970s, he and his friend Jean-Michel Basquiat collaborated on a series of cryptic messages seen around the city signed from SAMO©.

Some 40 years on Diaz remains active (check out his Instagram account here).

We covered a lot in 30 minutes, from the early days of graffiti in NYC to Sara Driver's recently released documentary, "Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat," which features Diaz, to the return of SAMO© after Election 2016.

Take a listen... or download it for later...

His work will also be featured in a new gallery via Adrian Wilson coming to 57 Great Jones St. ... where Basquiat lived and worked at the time of his death in 1988.

The EVG podcast: More hawk talk with Laura Goggin

[The Tompkins Square fledgling by Goggla]

I invited East Village-based photographer Laura Goggin (aka Goggla!) back to the East Village Radio storefront studio on First Avenue for another EVG podcast. (Listen to our first session from June here.)

We talked about what has happened this summer with the red-tailed hawks of Tompkins Square Park, including:

• The joy of the young red-tailed fledgling
• The death of the older fledgling
• The hawks loving the concerts in the Park
• The parenting skills of Christo and Amelia
• The latest on Dora, Christo's ex-mate now in wing rehab (The Post might be interested in her status!)

Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this...

This link will take you to Goggla's site for more photos and red-tailed hawk narratives. And stay tuned for more EVG podcasts — I'll be posting another one next week.

The EVG podcast: A 'Vanishing New York' conversation with Jeremiah Moss

This episode of the EVG podcast features a conversation with Jeremiah Moss, the writer behind the blog Vanishing New York. The paperback edition of his book, "Vanishing New York: How a Great City Lost Its Soul," is out this week. (The paperback launch event is tonight at 7:30 at Books Are Magic, 225 Smith St. in Brooklyn.)

Jeremiah joined me in the East Village Radio studio on First Avenue to discuss moving to NYC 25 years ago, starting his blog and attempting to save small businesses from extinction. We also talk about how he encouraged me to start the EV Grieve blog 11 years ago.

The EVG podcast: Red-tailed hawk talk with Laura Goggin

[Christo, left, and Amelia by Goggla]

As mentioned last week, I recently launched an EVG podcast, recording episodes in the East Village Radio studio on First Avenue.

This conversation with East Village-based photographer Laura Goggin (aka Goggla!) was the first one that I did. We recorded it several weeks ago, and many red-tailed hawk developments have occurred since then, such as the arrival of the two chicks... who are growing so quickly.

In any event, in the podcast, we talk about the history of Christo and Dora and their offspring as well as discuss the tabloid-worthy exploits of Christo (and Not Dora/Nora and Amelia) and the other red-tailed hawks in the city.

This link will take you to Goggla's site for more photos and red-tailed hawk narratives. And stay tuned for more EVG podcasts (kind of in the "soft open" phase, to use some restaurant lingo).

The EVG podcast

I recently launched an EVG podcast, recording the episodes at the East Village Radio studio on First Avenue (in case you're wondering why there's some background noise, such as a grocery cart filled with recyclables).

We started with something music-related, talking with Mike Katz and Crispin Kott, the authors of the recently released book "Rock and Roll Explorer Guide to New York City."

Here's the first one...

I also interviewed Goggla about the red-tailed hawks in Tompkins Square Park. Will be posting that edition soon.

Anyway, I hope to cover a variety of topics moving forward. More about all this later...
