Breaking: Rooftop burglar spotted on East 10th Street

About 90 minutes ago, police blocked off part of East 10th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue... several people on the scene said that a man was spotted jumping between the buildings with a knapsack ... police sources believe this might be the same man responsible for a string of robberies in the neighborhood of late...





EV Grieve reader David sent along the following shots...




He saw at least one dozen police officers, five SWAT members and one dog... word is a gun and some narcotics were recovered by police... the search was called off by police a little after midnight, he says....

This was also the cause of the helicopter that everybody seemed to hear tonight...

325 E. 10th St. facing year-long gut renovation

An EV Grieve reader and fourth-generation resident of East 10th Street told me that 325 E. 10th St. (a few doors west of the Tompkins Square Library branch) is now undergoing a year-long gut renovation...(and there's another building behind here that's only accessible through 325...)





And bicyclists here should be warned about the dumpster in the street...

Somehow, according to the sign, the year-long renovation here will make all of our lives better...

By the way, apartments in this building were on the market as summer rentals last year.

Historic James Renwick house on East 10th Street now 17.5 percent less expensive

According to Trulia.com, this beauty on 124 E. 10th St. was reduced in price by 17.5 percent last Friday, from $4,599 million to $3,795 million. Here's the listing at Corcoran:

Bubble tea joint coming to East 10th Street

Just west of Avenue A on East 10th Street. ThirsTea. The sign says they will serve "bubble tea, drinks and snacks." I can't even remember what was in here before. A kid's shop? A Brazilian jeans shop?

Space available at 319 E. 10th St. (and don't forget to ask about the $13,500-per-month apartment!)

There are apartments and some commercial space for rent here at 319 E. 10th St. across from Tompkins Square Park...

Kevin Bacon LOVES that delicious vegan ice cream at Stogo!

In this week's edition of My New York in the New York Post (this feature isn't online..), the Bacon Brothers -- Kevin and his, uh, brother -- discuss their favorite things in the city...And on Kevin's list: The vegan ice cream at Stogo on East 10th Street near Second Avenue, the former site of the beloved A. Fontana Shoe Repair...Anyway, Kevin says it's good stuff! That vegan ice cream. Wow, what a great plug for this shop! It's nice that a big-name actor is so supportive of such a place...




Of course, Kevin doesn't mention that Stogo is owned by his brother-in-law. Or maybe he disclosed this fact and the Post didn't include it...

The Really Really Free Market may need a new home

For the past four years, the Really Really Free Market has held their monthly exchanges at the St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery on East 10th Street. As the the Times reports, they may need to find a new home, perhaps just temporarily.

Organizers said the Really Really Free Market has never seemed more relevant than in the current economic climate. But now the future of the market, at least at St. Mark’s, is in doubt. Elizabeth Arce, 20, a member of In Our Hearts, the network of collectives and individuals that runs the market, said that a church staff member told her this month that the market would have to move.

“He said the Really Really Free Market could not be held at the church anymore,” she said.

Ms. Arce said that if she and others could not reach an agreement with the church, they would begin looking for another site for the next gathering, scheduled for the end of February.

James Benn, the church administrator, said the free market would be suspended for the time being, while the church awaited the appointment of a new priest, but was not permanently banned.

Martha Stewart to help drive up rents on East 10th Street

First Anthony Bourdain, now this....The New York Post brings us this item today:

FORGET 46th Street - Martha Stewart has crowned a new Restaurant Row.

In a four-part restaurant tour kicking off Monday on "The Martha Stewart Show" (11 a.m., Ch. 4), the domestic diva is visiting a quartet of tiny downtown eateries on E. 10th Street.

"I have never been on a street anywhere in New York where restaurant after restaurant is just so, so good," says Stewart, citing "diverse" menus and "fantastic" prices as reasons for her latest foodie obsession.

Hmm-mmm.

While E. 10th Street seems to be edgier territory than Stewart's usual four-star stomping grounds, this funky strip popular with college kids and night crawlers isn't such a big departure for Stewart.

"She's just as game to be in the East Village as she is uptown," says [Stewart supervising producer Lisa] Wagner. "She has her favorite places - it's not always Nobu."
