At the new location of Ess-A-Bagel

As we first noted this past weekend, the new location of Ess-A-Bagel opened at 324-326 First Ave. near East 19th Street in Stuy Town.

EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by to check out the new, more spacious Ess-A-Bagel...

...and as previously noted, Ess-A-Bagel will now toast your bagel. (The old Ess-A-Bagel on First Avenue at 21st Street sported "No Toasting" signs.) You can spot the toaster behind the counter...

OK! There...

As the previous First Avenue location started to close down in March 2015, patrons started writing their goodbyes on the walls... the owners have preserved part of those walls here...

Charles Wenzelberg, one of the owners (pictured above with a longtime patron), offered a few more details, such as that Ess-A-Bagel will soon offer deliveries, add sidewalk seating and stay open a little later. (Their current hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) They will also expand their offerings to include pastries, cakes ... and bialys.

In an interview with Town & Village, Mike Wenzelberg (Charles' brother), talked about the numerous delays that kept Ess-A-Bagel from opening earlier this year.

A bigger problem was that a gas meter had to have a new line drawn from the gas main. Other issues were related to the size of the oven and necessary duct work, as well as a new air conditioning unit on the roof and making sure the noise from it didn’t disturb neighbors. “We don’t want these tenants to be angry with us,” said Wenzelberg.

Ess-a-Bagel closed its 40-year-old shop on First Avenue at East 21st Street in March 2015 following a landlord dispute.

[Updated] Ess-A-Bagel's new location is now open

The wait is over for fans of Ess-A-Bagel ... the owners have announced via Facebook an opening date for their new store at 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street in Stuy Town.

Not sure about an opening time — one wasn't listed with the post. (Will add store hours when they are available.)

There have been a few delays. February was the first opening date. Co-owner David Wilpon had said that the delay in opening had to do with obtaining numerous city permits to build out their new space.

Updated 9/5

As several commenters noted, Ess-A-Bagel had its soft opening yesterday... and they are open today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I went by just after 8 and there were 16 people in line. (I did not stay....)

The new Ess-A-Bagel location: 'Almost there'

It appears that the wait may finally be over for fans of Ess-A-Bagel ... the owners have been building out a new home at 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street in Stuy Town. There have been a few delays.

In any event, Ess-A-Bagel took to Facebook last night for an update...

New 1st Avenue Ess-A-Bagel will have a TOASTER

[EVG photo from last week]

Ess-A-Bagel fans continue to wait for the new location to open at 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street in Stuy Town.

The opening date has ben pushed back several times, starting in February. The Ess-A-Bagel Facebook page shows a lot of progress, such as the arrival of tables and chairs as well as the deli case late last month. The opening date is "soon."

When this Ess-A-Bagel opens, there will be one noticeable difference... the presence of a TOASTER...

Uh-oh!

The shop, which never offered the toasted bagel option, shut down its home of nearly 40 years on First Avenue at East 21st Street in March 2015 … depending on who's telling the story, there was some sort of disagreement between the landlord and Ess-A-Bagel’s owners. At the time, the Ess-A-Folks vowed that they would open in a new storefront nearby.

The Ess-A-Bagel signage has arrived, but the opening date has been postponed

The sign is up now (as of last week) at Ess-A-Bagel, 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street in the Shoppes of Stuy Town.

However, the original February opening date never obviously happened. According to the new issue of Town & Village (story not online yet), David Wilpon, one of the owners, said that there have been some unnamed obstacles that have pushed back the timing. He's now looking at a May opening.

Meanwhile, renovations of the space continue. "We are plodding along," he said.

Ess-A-Bagel will be opening one of these days

On the topic of bagels... we happened to walk by the incoming Ess-A-Bagel at 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street on Saturday. No sign of bagel life here just yet on the east side of the Avenue in the Shoppes of Stuy Town. The coming soon sign arrived last Oct. 22.

Last we read, at the Town & Village Blog, the new location would be open last month. This, according to one of the owners, Muriel Frost, who said that things were proceeding at the new space, despite having to wait for some permits and other paperwork issues.

We also heard from a well-placed tipster that Ess-A-Bagel will be opening a location in the Wall Street area.

Lastly!

[Updated] Ess-A-Bagel announces its new location on 1st Avenue

The folks at Ess-A-Bagel have put up the coming soon sign on their new home — 324-326 First Ave. at East 19th Street… on the east side of the Avenue in the Shoppes of Stuy Town (in the former GameStop storefront).

No word yet on an opening date. The banner just arrived yesterday.

A quick recap: The bagel shop shut down its home of nearly 40 years on First Avenue at East 21st Street back in March… depending on who's telling the story, there was some sort of disagreement between the landlord and Ess-A-Bagel’s owners. At the time, the Ess-A-Folks vowed that they would open in a new storefront nearby.

As for the former Ess-A-Bagel space at No. 359 … today marks the one-month anniversary of Upper East Side favorite (uh, right?) Tal Bagels

Tal replaced the former Rose Restaurant and part of Ess-A-Bagel. A Bank of America ATM center is supposedly taking the rest of the square footage and going in on the corner at East 21st Street.

Oh, and because multiple people pointed this out in the comments recently…

… the Moe's Southwest Grill has closed at 367 First Ave. …

Many thanks to @wemakesomething for the tip!

Updated 10/24

Here's more info on this location via the Town & Village blog… One of the owners, Muriel Frost, said that "the new location will be bigger, which will allow the bagel shop to do things that couldn’t be done at the old shop.

"We will do catering and also delivery, which we were not physically equipped to do before," she said.

No word about toasting.

Let's just keep talking about bagels on 1st Avenue

[Ess-A-Bagel photo from March 22]

Here's a follow-up to our previous Ess-A-Bagel/Tal Bagels post from March 30...

Ess-A-Bagel closed up their home of nearly 40 years on March 20 at First Avenue and East 21st Street.

There is now a coming soon sign up for Tal Bagels at the former home of Rose, a chicken restaurant, adjacent to Ess-A-Bagel...

... as well as in the former Ess-A-Bagel space...

There was also a Tal Bagels sign up a few storefronts to the north at 365 First Ave. ... next door to where the new Ess-A-Bagels MAY open...

To make this even more confusing... the Tal Bagels sign is no longer up on the plywood.

Thankfully the Town & Village Blog has it all sorted out for us from a post on Friday...

Tal Bagels, which has three other locations in NYC, will be opening in part of the old Ess-A-Bagel space (along with 350 square feet for a Bank of America branch).

And what about No. 365? To Town & Village:

Tal will be opening a shop/restaurant for smoked fish, similar in style to downtown institution Russ & Daughters. That business will go into the space at the former Beehives & Buzzcuts at 365 First Avenue, which has about 2,000 square feet... It may not be called Tal and there is not yet a planned opening date.

“It’ll be fish and salads, European smoked fish like herring,” said [Tal partner Mohammed] Kamal. He explained that in just the bagel shop space, there wouldn’t have been enough room for bagels as well as “the full line” of fish.

No word yet on a new home for Ess-A-Bagel.

Going out of the neighborhood for a moment to discuss a favorite topic (spoiler: bagels). So the lease-less Ess-A-Bagel closed up their home of nearly 40 years last Sunday on First Avenue and East 21st Street.

Ownership maintains that they will reopen nearby.

According to Town & Village, Ess-A-Bagel has expressed interest in the now-closed laundromat space the next block up at No. 363…

Seems like a good spot. Or maybe it was. Several readers pointed out that Tal Bagels is opening another NYC branch… right next door. Coming soon signs arrived last week…

[Updated] Ess-A-Bagel has closed for now on 1st Avenue

Yesterday was last call for the nearly 40-year-old bagel shop on First Avenue at East 21st Street…

Here's a video that someone from the #SaveNYC group made from inside the shop after the doors closed...

To recap the recap on the situation here:

As the Town & Village Blog first reported on Jan. 16, Ess-a-Bagel was being forced out of its longtime home. However, according to a statement that the landlord's reps sent us, Ess-A-Bagel’s owners "repeatedly refused to meet us between their below-market rent and current market value."

However, they will be reopening nearby one of these days...

As to where… owner David Wilpon told Town & Village "that there were a couple of possibilities, but declined to elaborate, citing confidentiality agreements." Last Monday, an Ess-A-Bagel worker "said even he didn’t know where the business was moving or when it would reopen."

According to Town & Village, Ess-A-Bagel has expressed interest in the now-closed laundromat space the next block up…

As for the now-closed Ess-A space at 359 First Ave. ... a Bank of America branch is in the works.

Meanwhile, because this always comes up on any First Avenue bagel posts… here are two other bagel shops on the west side of First Avenue between 14th Street and 21st …

1 week left for Ess-A-Bagel at its current 1st Avenue location

You have until Sunday to stop by the bagel shop just a little north of here on First Avenue at East 21st Street. Ess-A-Bagel will be closed starting on March 23, per a note on display for customers inside the shop.

Whatever transpired between the two sides … Ess-A-Bagel is leaving its home here of 39 years… perhaps staying close by…

The note to customers emphasizes that they will not be leaving the area ... with a Grand Reopening coming at an undisclosed location.

No word yet where the new Ess-A-Bagel might be… The former home of The Frenchmen is apparently a possibility, according to a tipster.

Meanwhile, Ess-A-Bagel fans are leaving notes on the wall...

Ess-a-Bagel is moving down the block

News broke on Friday via the Town & Village Blog that Ess-a-Bagel was being forced out of its longtime home on First Avenue at East 21st Street. The 39-year-old bagel favorite apparently did not get its lease renewed.

However, according to a statement that the landlord's reps sent us: "Ess-A-Bagel’s owners repeatedly refused to meet us between their below-market rent and current market value."

In any event, it appears that Ess-a-Bagel already has a new space lined up ... based on this tweet sent Saturday...

A tipster with knowledge of the situation here also told us about the move.

The landlord, L&M Development Partners, reportedly already has a Bank of America and Tower Bagels fitted for the current Ess-a-Bagel space.

As for Ess-a-Bagel's new space, perhaps it will be the former home of The Frenchmen.

Updated 1:56 p.m.

Gothamist notes that the Ess-A-Bagel owners have yet to sign the lease at the new location.

[Updated] Report: Landlord forcing Ess-a-Bagel from its longtime home

Ess-a-Bagel, which has anchored the corner of First Avenue and East 21st Street since 1976, is being forced out of its longtime home.

According to Sabina Mollot at the Town & Village Blog, none of the restaurants on that corner — Ess-A-Bagel, Grill 21 and Rose Restaurant — are getting their leases renewed.

Per the article:

David Wilpon, the owner of Ess-A-Bagel said the longtime bagel joint may be moving somewhere close by but it’s nowhere near a done deal. “There’s a lot that’s up in the air,” he said, adding that he’s still holding out some hope of staying put. He’s also requesting a holdover and is in the midst of negotiations.

Wilpon said the trouble with his lease started when his aunt, Florence Wilpon, who’d founded the businesses in 1976, died. This was in September, 2013 during the midst of negotiations for a renewal. After that, while the family was dealing with the will and related issues, “They claimed we weren’t getting back to them in a timely fashion.”

The landlord, L&M Development Partners, reportedly already has a Bank of America and Tower Bagels fitted for the Ess-a-Bagel space.

And this sounds familiar: "Wilpon chalked up the impending closure as part of the pattern of the city’s landlords preferring to oust mom-and-pops in the hopes of getting a corporation that can pay more."

Head over to the Town & Village Blog for more details.

There's a second Ess-A-Bagel at 831 Third Ave. in Midtown East.

Updated 6:08 p.m.

A spokesperson for East 21 Retail LLC sent us the following statement:

"When we purchased the property, our main priority was to keep Ess-A-Bagel as a tenant. Ess-A-Bagel is a tradition in this city and we had no desire to see them leave. In the three years since, we’ve bent over backwards to come to a mutually fair agreement with Ess-A-Bagel’s owners. Our offer would have allowed Ess-A-Bagel to remain — and even gave them the option to expand — in the space they are in currently. Unfortunately, it takes two sides to make a deal, and Ess-A-Bagel’s owners repeatedly refused to meet us between their below-market rent and current market value.

We regret that Ess-A-Bagel chose to misrepresent our intentions in the press. We take our responsibility as landlords very seriously and worked diligently to keep Ess-A-Bagel as a tenant. At a meeting in September, Ess-A-Bagel confirmed they were actively negotiating a lease at a new location. We wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors."
